Star Wars-Episode 7

미술은 감상자에게 친절하지 않다. 음악처럼 순간적으로 흘러가며 청중의 감정적인 반응을 훔쳐가지도, 문학처럼 직접적으로 인지되는 언어로 설명해주지도 않는다. 그저 자리에서 가만히, 자신에게 먼저 눈을 맞추고 말을 걸어줄 상대를 기다린다. 이런 도도함과 수줍음을 지닌 미술작품을 마주하게 되면 관객으로서는 처음부터 가까이하기가 어렵게 느껴질 수 있으나, 그만큼 관객이 능동적으로 또 적극적으로 감상할 여지가 있다는 점이 미술의 매력이라 할 수 있다. ● 아직까지는 막연한 그 '감상'에 있어서 관객이 찾을 수 있는 1차적인 팁, 가이드가 있다면 그것은 작품의 제목이다. 제목이라는 것을 가만 생각해보면 상당히 제멋대로라고 하지 않을 수 없다. 제목이 있느냐 없느냐, 어떤 제목이냐에 따라 감상의 범위와 방향, 성질 등이 휙휙 뒤바뀌기 마련이며, 기본적으로 물리적 속성을 지닌 작품에 온전히 속하지도 않는 독립적인 지위를 가지고 있기 때문이다. 심지어 그것의 형태는 미술가들이 신중하게 다루는 재료인 텍스트(text)이다. ● 이 지점에서 이번 '스타워즈 에피소드' 展을 통해 색다른 작품감상법을 제안하려 한다. 전시된 작품을 보고(듣고, 직관하여) 시, 소설 등 자유로운 텍스트의 형태로 작품이 아닌, 자신의 감상에 제목을 지어주는 것이다. 이는 단순히 그림과 글이 만나는 사회 전반적 화두인 융∙복합 양식을 넘어서, 온전히 자신의 것인 '감상'을 확장, 심화시켜 창작의 영역에까지 이르는 경험을 제공할 것이다. ● 특히 이번 기획전에는 각기 다른 색깔의 매력적인 추상작업을 하는 4명의 작가들 – 박민하, 정성윤, 라이너 노이마이어(Rainer Neumeier), 토비아스 레너(Tobias Lehner) – 을 초대하여, 종종 어렵다는 불평을 듣곤 하는 추상회화, 조각을 새로이 발견할 수 있는 자리를 마련하였다. 최대한 감정을 제거한 추상적 풍경을 그리는 박민하, 단순한 형태의 기계로 시적 상징을 담아내는 정성윤, 구상적인 형상으로도 추상적 기호로도 해석되는 노이마이어, 그리고 음악에서 시작되는 회화 실험을 진행해온 레너, 이 엄선된 네 작가 작품의 추상성에 기대어 감상자는 제한이 없는 상상력을 발휘할 수 있을 것이다. ● 뿐만 아니라, 새해 벽두에 신성(新星)처럼 신춘문예를 통해 등단한 시인 김성호, 윤종욱, 소설가 장성욱, 한정현이 동참하여 문학가로서 바라보는 작품의 면면 또한 들여다볼 수 있다. 그들이 참여작가들의 작품 한 점과 대면하며 써 내려간 글을 함께 감상함으로써, 관람객은 두 장르 예술의 만남에서 발생하는 낯선 즐거움을 만끽하는 동시에 이를 자신의 감상을 풀어내는 데 있어 훌륭한 길잡이로 삼을 수 있으리라 예상한다. ● 그리하여 이번 전시를 보고자 하는 관람객에게 구체적으로 제안한다. 먼저, 시간을 넉넉히 잡고 갤러리를 방문하기를 제안한다. 유독 마음을 잡아 끄는 작품 앞에서 작품의 짜임을 씨실과 날실로 풀어내어도 보고, 가라앉은 것과 부유하는 층층 사이로 돌아다니며 작품이라는 소우주의 해체와 재구성을 반복해보기를 제안한다. 내가 그의 이름을 불러 그가 나에게 한 송이 '꽃'이 되어 오기를 바라는 마음으로 작품을 보아주기를 제안한다. 그리고 전시장에 준비된 테이블에 앉아, 그렇게 다가온 '나의 감상'에게 정성스러운 작명을 해주자. 그러면 어느새 작품과 자신의 글이 마주보고 있는 골짜기에서 시작이 어딘지 모르게 발생한 메아리 같은 공명을 느끼게 될 것이다. ● 어느덧 7이라는 숫자가 붙은 『스타워즈 에피소드』展은 UNC 갤러리 개관 이래 매년 초 선보이는 연례 기획전으로, 국내외에서 활발하게 활동중인 작가들과 함께 미술계의 지형을 가늠할 수 있는 전시로 자리매김 해왔다. 더불어 이번 일곱 번째 전시를 통해서는 21세기형 현대적 추상미술을 신선한 방식으로 소개함으로써 동시대 미술과 관람객 사이에 특별한 유대의 다리를 놓고자 한다. ■ UNC 갤러리

"작품과 눈높이를 맞추는 순간 가장 먼저 떠오른 느낌은 불온함이었다. 독일 작가의 예민한 눈에 포착된, 우리가 잊은 척 살아가고 있지만 어쩔 수 없이 새어나오는 감출 수 없는 불온함. 그 불온함의 정체를 파고들다 막다른 골목에서 마주친 것은 죽음이었다. 죽음을 끼고 다니는 인간. 감상자들에게 잠깐이나마 환기가 되었으면 좋겠다." ■ 장성욱

Art is not kind to its audience. It does not flow in an instant and steals audience's emotional reaction like music does, or explains in a directly understood language like literature does. It simply stands still and waits until someone approaches. As we confront an artwork with such arrogance and shyness, at first it doesn't seem easily approachable. However, this suggests that as an audience we are provided with many options to experience art. ● As the idea of 'observation' sounds too general to many of us, there is a primary guideline we would like to give you, which is, a title of a work. If you think about a work, one can say it is quite irregular. Depending on various circumstances, whether there 'is' a title, or 'what' is a title, a range, direction and type of emotion easily shifts, and fundamentally it is not confined by the physical nature of an artwork and possess its independent position. Even more, such form is 'a text,' of which many artists take a great care. ● At this point we would like to suggest a new way of enjoying artworks through this year's Star Wars Episode Exhibition. That is, looking at the artworks (listen and feel them) and sharing your response by giving a name to your own feelings to these works. (Like a poem or a novel, which has a free form of text.) This goes beyond an interaction between an image and a text, which will enable the expansion, development of an individual response, leading to a new level of creativity as well as meaningful experience to everyone. ● Especially for this show, we have invited four very distinguished abstract artists of own colors – Min Ha Park, Sung Yoon Chung, Rainer Neumeier, Tobias Lehner – and prepared a venue to newly discover abstract painting and sculpture, which are often considered difficult to understand. Through the abstraction of works by these artists (Park who paints abstract scenery with as much emotions removed as possible, Jung who portrays the poetic symbolism through a simplified form of machines, Neumeier whose work can be interpreted as figurative forms or abstract signs, Lehner who proceeds with a visual experimentation that originates from music), audience will be able to stretch out their imagination to their fullest. Also, we are provided with an opportunity to take a look at insights from very talented literary professionals (a poet Sung Ho Kim, Jong Uk Yoon, novelists Sung Wook Chang and Jung Hyun Han, who have gained much attention as a rising star of a new year). Audience will have chance to experience both the artworks and the texts (the writers' responses to the artworks). Such interaction between two genres of art might seem unfamiliar pleasure at first, but we hope it provides a great support for audience to truly enjoy and appreciate the works of artists during the show. ● Therefore, we would like to suggest to our audience. First, take your time as you visit our gallery. In front of a work that catches your attention, we suggest you to deconstruct it into fillings and threads, to wander around the sunken and floating layers, to repeat dissolution and reconstruction of a work as a small universe. We suggest you to look at a work with a mind as if I call his name he comes to me as a 'flower.' Then, sit on a table in the gallery and carefully give a name to your dear emotion. Then, suddenly from a valley in between the work and your writing, you shall experience an echoing resonance. ● This year is the seventh (7th) year of Star Wars Episode Exhibition, the annual project featuring a number of prominent contemporary artists in Korea as well as global artists. Also, we hope to provide a bridge between a contemporary art and audience by introducing 21st century contemporary abstract art through fresh and creative means. ■ UNC gallery
