코끼리 주름 펼치다

『코끼리 주름 펼치다』전시는 코끼리를 통해 "What is Seeing-본다는 것은 무엇인가"라는 본질적이고 근원적인 질문을 추구한다. 동일한 질문에 대한 엄정순 작가와 시각장애인들의 서로 다른 접근이 만나는 지점에서 이 전시는 시작한다. 무수한 선의 생성과 소멸, 그 행위의 반복을 통하여 "존재의 본질", "봄"의 본질을 관념적으로 더듬어가는 작업을 해왔던 엄정순의 작업과는 달리 물리적으로 더듬는 행위를 통하여 관념을 시각화해 나가는 시각장애인들의 작업은 보이지 않는 것을 시각화하는 눈을 통하여 본다는 것의 본질, 존재의 본질에 다가가고 있었다. 엄정순 작가의 작업 「코끼리 걷는다」와 시각장애인들의 작업 「장님 코끼리 만지기」가 한 공간에서 같이 전시 되는 이유이다. 이 모든 여정을 가능케 했던 것은 다름 아닌 코끼리의 존재였다. 작가 엄정순과 시각장애인들은 봄의 본질을 현현함으로써 드러나는 존재의 본질을 탐구하고자 하였고, 그 중심에는 코끼리가 있었다. ● "개별 코끼리의 삶을 통해, 코끼리가 주요 역할을 한 역사적인 사건을 통해 우리는 코끼리라는 위대한 종의 역동하는 영혼을 들여다보고, 동시에 우리 자신에 대해 더욱 깊은 통찰력을 얻게 될 것이다." "달리(Dali)라는 스페인 화가는 것을 보이는 것을 그대로 그리는 것이 아니라 서로 다른 생각들을 섞어서 세상에 없는 새로운 작품을 만들어 냈어. 초현실주의 작가라고 하는데, 초현실주의가 무얼까? "상상하는 것 아니에요?" "맞아. 달리가 만든「우주 코끼리」도 지금 네 작업처럼 가는 다리를 가진 코끼리야. 원래 코끼리 다리는 굵지만..." "그럼 우리는 달리가 상상한 것을 또 상상하며 만들 수도 있겠네요?"

"처음에 코를 만졌는데 너무 커서 깜짝 놀랐어요. 코끼리를 타면서 얼굴 쪽을 만져봤고, 그 다음엔 배, 다리, 꼬리까지 만져봤어요." ● 고통을 연상시키는 무거운 발걸음, 거대한 몸집, 긴 코, 둥글게 떨어지는 등, 수많은 주름을 가진 코끼리와의 대면을 통해 이 전시는 우리를 근원으로 초대한다. 이 전시를 통하여 '본다는 것'의 본질적인 문제에 천착했던 작가 엄정순의 고민이 '본다는 것'의 인식론적 지평을 넓히는 것에만 머무르지 않고 우리 삶의 지평을 어떻게 넓혀 가고 있는 지를 보게 될 것이다. ● 태고의 모습을 지닌 채 우리와 함께 살고 있는 코끼리가 우리세대에게 전달하려는 메시지는 수많은 시간과 공간의 주름 속에 접혀있어 보이지 않는다. 예술가의 눈으로, 시각장애인의 눈으로, 코끼리의 눈으로, 관객의 눈으로 그 주름을 펼쳐본다. ■ 서울시립북서울미술관

The exhibition『Unfolding the Folds of Elephant』explores the original and fundamental subject of "What is seeing." This exhibition begins where different approaches and perspectives of the artist Oum Jeongsoon and the visually impaired meet about the same question they were asked. Oum works on the subject of the formation and destruction of infinite lines, "the nature of presence" through its repetitive action, and on the ideological essence of "seeing." On the other hand, works of art by the blind are produced by seeing through the heart as they physically trace things to visualize an idea - it is their ability to discern the whole from the part as they approach the nature of presence and the essence of seeing what is not seen through another kind of vision. These are the reasons that Elephant WALK by Oum and Touching An Elephant by the visually impaired are exhibited in the same space. Nothing but the presence of an elephant has made this entire journey possible. As the artist Oum and the blind manifest the nature of seeing, they seek the nature of existence and there is an elephant in the center. ● "Through the life of an individual elephant, Through the historical event where an elephant plays an important role We look into the dynamic soul of a great species, an elephant, And we gain a deep insight into ourselves." Bradshaw, Ecologist and Psychologist) ● In the encounter with heavy steps that reminds us of an agony, its enormous frame, long nose, spherical back, and the many folds of an elephant, this exhibition invites us to the origin. While Oum is concerned with the fundamental matter of "seeing" she not only focuses on a broadening epistemological prospect but also how to broaden our lives through this exhibition. ● Messages from elephants living with us - its original form passed on from ancient times - aren't visible in its hidden layers and folds (of numerous times and spaces).
