갤러리바톤은 이탈리아 사진작가인 파올로 벤츄라(Paolo Ventura, b. 1968)의 세번째 개인전『Short Stories』를 2월 4일부터 3월 6일까지 압구정동 전시공간에서 개최한다. ● 파올로는 자신의 초기 시리즈인「Winter Stories」부터 사진이라는 장르에 자신의 예술적 상상을 착근시키는 도구로 디오라마(Diorama) 기법을 적극적으로 활용하였고, 시리즈를 거듭하면서 이미지의 선별, 배경의 해석 등에 변화를 가져오며 발전시켜왔다. 아트디렉터가 극본에 묘사된 공간을 상상력과 고증을 통해 창조하고 등장 인물의 의복과 분장을 정교하게 설정하여 한 장의 스틸 화면을 연출하듯, 디오라마 기법을 통해 작가는 미니어쳐로 제작된 소품과 시공간적 정보를 내포하고 있는 배경을 결합하여 상상의 영역에 머물던 "결정적 장면(Scene)"의 시각화를 이루어낸다. 주로 시리즈로 발표되는 그의 작품들은 근대 유럽, 특히 2차대전 전후의 이탈리아(Italy)라는 특정한 시간대와 공간을 공유하면서, 등장하는 각각의 작품이 시리즈의 중심 테마를 지지하는 장치로 활용되는 동시에 각각의 독립된 단락을 이끌어가는 역할을 수행한다.

파올로식 디오라마 기법은 회화 중심적인 사고에서의 사진에 대한 상대적인 이질감에 대한 일종의 해법을 제시하기도 하는데, 사각 프레임에 포함되는 모든 이미지를 대부분 작가가 실제 제작하고 배경이 되는 평면과 삼차원 공간을 유화 기법으로 재현해 냄으로써, 카메라의 역할을 중립적인 관찰자 또는 일종의 아카이비스트(Archivist)로 활용함이 흥미롭다. ● 이번 전시에 소개될 작가의 신작인 Short Stories는 몇장의 이미지로 이루어진 각각의 이야기가 나열식으로 제작되어져 마치 단편 소설집과 같은 구조로 짜여져있다. Short Stories의 특징은 일란성 쌍둥이 동생인 안드레아 벤츄라(Andreas Ventura, b. 1968)와 그의 아들과 함께 작가가 모든 스토리에 주인공으로 등장한다는 점이다.

사진작가 자신이 작품의 대상(Subject)이 됨은 국제적 명성의 여류 사진작가인 신디 셔먼 (Cindy Sherman, b. 1954)이 평생 고수해온 스타일이기도 한데, 파올로는 자신이 창조한 시공간에서 기승전결이 뚜렷한 스토리를 리드하는 주역이자 해설자의 역할로 등장한다는 점에서 표현적인 차이점을 둔다. 과장된 몸짓으로 배경과 의복에 의지해 풀어나가는 이야기들은 무성영화시대의 스토리텔링 방식의 재현으로도 읽혀지는데, 전작에 비해 배경이 되는 공간을 실경의 복제가 아닌 의도적으로 연극 무대와 흡사하도록 설정한 점 등은 이러한 해석을 보다 가능케 한다. ● 전작이 정교한 디오라마 기법을 통해 작가에 의해 창조된 현실이 인간의 시각적 불완전성을 빌려 원본의 영역에 끊임없이 도전했다면, Short Stories는 공간의 묘사는 최대한 절제하고 등장인물이 중심되는 구도를 설정함으로써 마술적 상상력과 구전되던 이야기를 풀어가는 여정이 작품의 중심이 되는 얼개를 보여준다. ● 파올로 벤츄라의『Short Stories』展은 오는 2월 4일부터 3월 6일까지 갤러리바톤 압구정동 전시공간에서 선보인다. ■ 갤러리바톤

Gallery Baton is pleased to showcase the third solo exhibition of Paolo Ventura (b.1968) Short Stories from February 4th to March 6th at the Apgujeong exhibition space. ● Since his early series, Winter Stories, Paolo has actively applied Diorama techniques as a tool for rooting his artistic imagination to photographs. He has developed the style over the series by creating different selection of the images or interpretation of background. As if an art director constructs a still frame by creating the space described in the script through imagination and historical research as well as elaborately preparing the character's clothes and make-up, the artist achieves visualization of the "Scene" that used to stay in the imaginative area by combining the props in miniatures and the background that connotes spatiotemporal information through Diorama techniques. Presented as a series, his works share a particular time and space of modern Europe, especially Italy after World War II. This spatiotemporal property is used as a device to support the central theme of the series as well as to lead each independent subsection. ● Paolo's Diorama techniques also suggest solution to the relative heterogeneity of photography within the logic centered to painting. It is interesting that the role of a camera becomes a neutral observer or an archivist in his works as he creates mostly all Images within the rectangular frame in their actual size and reproduces the flat but three-dimensional space of the background with his oil-painting technique. ● The artist's new body of work in this exhibition, Short Stories, is a series of images consisting of listed stories that resemble the structure of short story books. A notable characteristic of short stories is that the artist along with his identical twin brother Andreas Ventura (b.1968) and his son appears as the main protagonist in every story. ● Becoming the subject in the work is the style that the female photographer Cindy Sherman (b.1954) has adhered to spanning her entire career. However, there is a difference in the method of expression since Paolo appears in his works as a protagonist and a commentator leading the narrative in the time and space that he created. The stories told by exaggerated gestures relying on the background and clothing can be seen as the revival of the storytelling method in the silent picture days. The artist intentionally prepared the background space to be similar to the theatre stage but not as a replica of actual scenery, and this makes the drawn analysis more possible than the previous series. ● Artificial reality created by the artist's Diorama techniques in the previous series has constantly challenged the realm of original with visual imperfections of human. In Short Stories, however, the spatial description is restrained while the characters become the main center in the composition. Therefore, the magical imagination and the journey of telling the orally passed on stories become the structure of the work. ● Paolo Ventura's Short Stories will be held at Apgujeong space of Gallery Baton from February 4th to March 6th. ■ GALLERY BATON
