현대미술에서 사물재료의 다양성 및 확장성을 탐구해 볼 수 있는 『사물이색(事物異色)』展은 '사물의 또 다른 빛깔'로도 볼 수 있지만, 그보다는 기존과는 차별화된 것, 색다른 성질을 지닌 특별한 것을 '이색적(異色的)'이라고 할 때 쓰는 표현에서 착안한 제목으로 '사물의 이색적인 측면'으로 해석할 수 있다. ● 캔버스에 대상을 모사하는 전통기법에서 벗어나 실제 물건을 갖다 붙인 콜라주(collage)의 탄생 이후 현대미술은 계속해서 새로운 재료의 발견과 확장을 통해 변모, 발전해왔다. 이 전시는 작가들의 상상력과 발상의 전환으로 채택된 여러 가지 사물재료의 변신과 그로 인한 특별한 의미의 생성 과정을 살펴봄으로써 예술작품의 기본적 속성을 쉽고 즐겁게 이해하고, 예술과 비예술, 일상과 예술의 경계를 허물어보고자 기획되었다. ● 작가의 선택에 의해 미술의 영역으로 진입함으로써 원래 놓여 졌던 공간과 맥락에서 이탈한 사물들은 예술작품으로서 새로운 의미와 사연을 부여받으며, 때로는 그 기능에서 벗어나 사유의 대상으로 다시 태어난다. 하나의 도구로서가 아닌 그 자체로 존재의 이유를 획득하는 것이다. 그리하여 새롭고 낯설지만, 한편으로는 친숙한 사물들의 변화된 모습을 만나볼 수 있다. ● 사물이색전은 사물을 그대로 사용하여 집적, 배열한 작품, 그리고 사물의 부분적인 요소를 결합, 적용, 대체, 변용하여 원래의 용도나 모양이 변경된 작품 등 사물재료의 다양한 면모를 보여준다. 또한 실제 사물은 아니지만 어떠한 사물이 가지는 일반적이고 특수한 모양을 은유하거나 내적 성질, 의미를 주제로 하여 만든 작품까지 총 31점의 작품이 4, 5전시실 두 곳에 나누어 구성되었다. ● 특히 생활주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 일상적 물건, 기성품 또는 자연, 음식, 폐품 등등 익숙한 사물들을 활용한 작품들로 친근하게 다가서서 새로운 관점으로 사물에 대해, 그것에 투영된 현 사회와 문화에 대해 생각하고 공감할 수 있는 기회가 되리라 기대해본다. 이를 위해 민정See, 성연주, 유목연, 윤정원, 이병찬, 지희킴, 최보희, 한지원 총 8명의 작가가 참여하였다.

민정See는 주로 플라스틱을 재료로 작업하며 환경에 대한 중요성과 가치관을 묻는 작품을 보여준다. 작가는 사전적으로 가짜, 인공물, 싸구려, 합성물 등의 뜻을 지닌 플라스틱을 쉽게 쓰고 버리는 현시대의 문화를 대변하는 상징적 소재라고 여긴다. 플라스틱 과자봉지, 일회용 포장지 등의 소품들이 인스턴트 도시의 가볍고, 얇고, 부풀려지고, 무색무취하며 쉽게 쓰고 버리는 인공적인 플라스틱 문화를 보여준다.

성연주는 머릿속에 부유하는 여러 음식재료와 의상이라는 각각의 동떨어진 대상을 결합해 만들어낸 상상 속의 창조물을 사진 이미지로 재현해낸다. 이것은 옷의 이미지만 빌려온 음식이고, 또 더 이상 음식이 될 수 없는 옷이기도 하다. 사진은 자유로운 조작이 가능함에도 여전히 그것이 사실이라고 믿고 착각하게 만드는 힘이 있다. 사진매체의 특성을 이용해 탄생한 제3의 이미지는 실제와 비실제 사이의 모호하지만 흥미로운 시각을 제시한다.

유목연_목연포차 MOKYON POCHA_나무, 쇼핑카트, 조리도구, TV모니터_가변설치_2014

유목연은 끊임없이 이동하며 유목하는 삶의 방식에서 오는 불안과 생존을 표현하기 위해 'UKEA'(브랜드 IKEA와 작가의 이름을 혼용)라는 키워드를 표방하여, 일회적이고 일상적인 소품으로 만들어진 가벼운 설치작품, 읽기 쉬운 설명을 곁들인 지극히 개인적인 매뉴얼 북, 장난감 등을 만들어낸다. '차 한 잔 합시다.', '목연포차'는 일상에 지치고 바쁜 현대인들을 위해 작가가 직접 따르는 따끈한 정종, 차 한 잔, 도톰한 달걀프라이를 생각하며 만든 1인용의 작은 이동식 선술집이다.

윤정원_우주의 꽃_스테인리스, 도금, 구슬, 아크릴, 소품_100×130×130cm_2014

윤정원은 드로잉, 회화, 오브제, 설치 등 다양한 영역에서 활동하며 옷, 가방, 신발, 모자, 조명, 액세서리, 유리구슬과 같은 일상용품을 주재료로 활용해 작품을 만든다. 낙천적이고 자유분방한 성격을 타고난 작가는 자신이 꿈꾸는 이상향의 세계를 회화와 오브제로 형상화했다. 각종 생활소품 하나하나를 별이라 상상하여 집적해 만들어낸 샹들리에는 '우주의 꽃'으로 다시 피어난다.

이병찬_Urban Creature_비닐봉지, 에어모터, Led램프, 광섬유_가변설치_2014~5

이병찬은 도시 내 소비생태계를 관찰하며, 일회용 비닐봉지를 변용, 결합하여 기괴하고 기형적인 형태의 도시생명체 작업을 이어가고 있다. 각종 비닐봉지가 변용, 결합되어 몸체를 이루고 있는 이 작품은 소리를 내며 빛을 발산하고, 공기를 넣었다 빼는 호흡을 하고, 가느다란 털과 같은 촉수를 이용해 다양하게 움직일 수도 있다. 현대인들의 소비행태가 점점 가속화될수록 거기서 나오는 잔여물이 만들어내는 도시생명체들도 진화를 거듭해간다.

지희킴_Impossible Anxiety 불가능한 열망_기부 받은 책에 인쇄된 이미지_가변설치_2013~4

지희킴은 영국유학시절 경험했던 언어의 장벽과 외모적 열등감에서 시작된 팝업 북 형태의 드로잉 설치작업을 하고 있다. 'Impossible Anxiety_불가능한 열망'(2013-14)에서 패션잡지의 모델들은 포토샵, 에어브러시를 통해 수없는 조작을 거친 비현실적 서구미인들이다. 그럼에도 사람들은 이를 맹목적으로 따르고 열광한다. 자신의 사적이고 내밀한 사연에서 출발한 지희킴의 작품은 현실에서 불가능한 욕망을 갈망하는 우리의 모습을 다시금 되짚는다.

최보희, 한지원_Zwischengänger_40여개의 캐리어, 10개의 스피커_가변설치_2013

최보의, 한지원은 독일유학 중에 만나 타국에서 느꼈던 감정들을 바탕으로 어느 곳에도 정착하지 못한 이방인의 삶을 소재로 공동 작업을 하고 있다. '사이를 건너는 사람'이라는 뜻의 Zwischengänger(2013)는 여행가방 수십 개가 전시장 바닥에 배열되어 있는 사운드 설치작품으로 가방 안에 숨겨진 스피커를 통해 각기 다른 소리들이 흘러나온다. 관람객들은 이들의 작품을 통해서 알 수 없는 또 다른 세계를 여행하는 듯한 기분을 느낄 수 있다. ■ 경남도립미술관

Objects Extraordinary is an exhibition exploring the spectrum and the potential boundaries of materials in contemporary art. The word 'isaek' in the exhibition's Korean title literally means other colors, with an extended meaning of being distinctively different and exceptional that directs to the 'extraordinary traits of objects'. ● Since the birth of collage where actual objects are attached to the canvas instead of the traditional way of portrayal, contemporary art has continued to transform and evolve through discovery of new materials and expansion of scope. The exhibition examines the transformation process of various materials chosen by the artists' imagination and new ideas, and observes how they are given special meanings. By doing so, it intends to provide an easier and more delightful way to understand the contemporary art and basic elements of artworks while opening up the borders dividing art from non-art, and art from everyday life. ● Objects are given a new meaning and story when they break away from their original space and context after the artist selects them to be introduced into the realm of art. At times they go further and are born again into objects of reason. Thus comes to life the changed looks of the object in a new, alien, extraordinary yet familiar way. ● Objects Extraordinary displays assorted aspects of objects through artworks compiling and arranging objects as they are, or artworks that change the object's original function or form by fusing, applying, replacing or transforming their elements partially. It also includes works that use metaphors of certain objects' common or unique shapes or take their inner nature and meanings as the main theme instead of using an actual object. A total of 31 artworks will be displayed in Exhibition room 4 and 5 of the Gyeongnam Art Museum. ● In particular, works utilizing daily objects such as manufactured goods, items of nature, food or junks should be familiar to the viewers and give them a chance for a new perspective to ponder and sympathize with the objects in addition to the current society and culture projected onto them. A total of eight artists, Minjung See, Yeonju Sung, Mokyon Yoo, Jeongwon Yoon, Byungchan Lee, Jihee Kim, Bohee Choi, Jiwon Han, have participated in the exhibition. ● Plastic is the main material Minjung See uses to stress the importance of environment and question relevant values. The dictionary definition of plastic is 'not real, artistic, cheap and synthetic'. The artist believes it is a symbolic material representing the contemporary culture where everything is used and thrown away easily. Plastic snack packaging and disposable wrapping paper are indications of artificial culture of plastic that is eminent in this light, thin, inflated, colorless and odorless city of convenience. ● Sung Yeonju takes imaginary creations made from the isolated elements of various food ingredients and clothing floating in the artist's mind and recreates them into photographic images. It is food utilizing only the images of clothes, and at the same time clothes that can no longer be food. Although photography is fully open to manipulation, it still holds the power to lure the people into believing it is true. The third image generated by using the nature of photography suggests a vague yet interesting perspective on real and unreal. ● Yoo Mokyon brings forward the keyword UKEA, a compound word of brand IKEA and the artist's name, to express the anxiety of survival from the endlessly dwelling and nomadic life. He creates simple installations using disposable and common objects, very personal manuals added with easy to read instructions, and toys. TEA, MOKYON POCHA is a custom made cart bar the artist created for the exhausted and busy people of today, thinking of a hot cup of rice wine poured by the artist himself, with a cup of tea and hearty egg fries. ● An artist active in drawing, painting, sculpture and installations, Yoon Jeongwon composes her work mainly by using common items like clothes, bags, shoes, hats, lightings, accessories, and glass marbles. As an optimistic and free minded person, the artist describes the ideal world she dreams of through paintings and objets. Each lifestyle item is deemed as a star and accumulated into a chandelier that blooms once again into a Universal flower. ● Lee Byunchan is an observer of the urban ecology of consumption. He distorts and fuses disposable plastic bags for his continuing project on urban living beings in a bizarre and distorted form. The art work's torso is composed of various plastic bags that are distorted and fused together, which makes sound while emitting light. It breathes in and out, and even moves in numerous ways by using its fur-like thin tentacles. As the consumption behavior of modern men accelerates, the urban beings created from the residue also continue to evolve. ● Jihee Kim's drawing installation is in the form of pop-up book that stems from the language barrier and inferior feelings she felt about her looks during her stay in Britain as a student. The fashion magazine models in Impossible Anxiety (2013-14) are surreal western beauties whose appearance went through countless manipulations of Photoshop and airbrushes. Nevertheless people are excited about them and would follow them unconditionally. Kim's work starts from the artist's private and secret story but it reflects upon ourselves who desire something unavailable in reality. ● Group work by Choi Bohee and Han Jiwon are about the life of aliens who fail to settle down anywhere, based on the emotions they felt while they studied in Germany. Zwischengänger (2013) meaning person crossing the gap is a sound installation where speakers hidden inside the bag each makes a different noise. Viewers will feel like they are traveling through an unknown other world as they experience the piece. ■ Gyeongnam Art Museum
