쌓고 쌓아 올리다

선을 긋습니다. 선은 그을수록 재미납니다. 선은 거짓말을 하지 않습니다. 긋는 대로 그어집니다. 선은 쌓이고 싸여 형태를 이루기도 감정을 보여주기도 힘을 보여주기도 합니다. 좋은 작업이란 어떤 것일까? 잘 그린 그림이란 어떤 것일까? 물어보고 생각해봤습니다. 대답은 제 각각이었고 제 생각도 계속 바뀝니다. 무식하게 그어보고 얍삽하게도 그어봅니다. 진지하게 그어보고 장난 삼아 그어도 봅니다. 기다랗게 그어보고 툭툭 끊어 그어봅니다. 웃으며 긋다가 긋고 나서 웁니다. 정답이 안 정해진 질문에 매달리는 일은 때론 모험을 하듯 흥분되다가도 어찌 보면 너무도 소모적인 일이어서 주변사람들에게 종종 피해를 안겨주곤 합니다. 죄스런 마음에 염원을 더해 정성스레 돌탑을 쌓듯이 선들을 쌓아봅니다. 이번 돌탑이 무너지면 옆에 다시 쌓아 올리겠지만 견고히 쌓인 탑이 소원을 이뤄주진 않겠지요. 그저 열심히 쌓다 보면 누군가 와서 말을 걸어주겠지요. 얼마 전 동료작가와 술 한잔하다 불안한 마음에 물어봤습니다. "형 우리 이제 시작인 거지?" 고개를 크게 끄덕여 주었습니다. ■ 이현수

A line is drawn. The more lines are drawn, the more fun it is. A line does not lie. It is drawn as it is drawn. Lines are cumulated and cumulated to take forms, or show emotions, or show strength. I have asked and contemplated on the questions: What is a good work? What is a well-drawn painting? The answers vary, and my idea also keeps changing. I draw a line ignorantly, and then try to draw one sly. One seriously, yet another jokingly. One long, and one discontinued at places. I draw one with a smile then cry after drawing it. Working hard on questions that do not have determinate answers is at times exciting like an adventure, but in another way it is too wasteful and sometimes inconveniences others around me. With a guilty heart, and yearning added to it, I cumulate lines lovingly as if building a stone pagoda. If this round of stone pagoda falls down, I will build another next to it. But a securely cumulated pagoda does not grant wishes. Simply, as I cumulate, someone will come to the side and strike a conversation. A while ago, when I was drinking with a fellow artist, I asked him with an insecure heart. "We are now only beginning, right?" He gave me a firm nod. ■ LEEHYUNSOO
