아세안의 보석 JEWELS OF ASEAN

『아세안의 보석』은 아세안 10개국을 대표하는 랜드마크가 지닌 문화적이며 상징적인 가치를 섬세한 시각적 표현으로 재해석함과 동시에 서로 다른 10개의 상징들이 모여 새로운 왕관 모양의 조형물로 재탄생된 설치작업이다. 이는 각 나라의 상징을 왕관을 이루는 하나하나의 보석으로 형상화함으로써, 아세안 문화가 보여주는 다양성 속의 조화와 그 속에서 아세안이 이루고자 하는 동반자적 미래를 상징한다. ● 아세안의 보석의 개별 상징들은 불교, 힌두교, 이슬람에 이르는 다양한 종교적 상징과 현대도시의 마천루에서 자연유산에서 이르기까지 매우 다양하게 이루어져 있는 것에서 볼 수 있듯이, 아세안 10개국은 각기 매우 다양한 역사와 문화적 배경을 가지고 있다. 문화적 다양성에 기반한 조화와 연대의 모습을 표현한 이번 작품은 아세안 각국의 개별 상징들이 지니는 고유한 아름다움을 유지하면서도 전체 속에서 조화를 이루는 모습이 잘 표현되어 있다. 마치 각국의 상징물이 서로 손을 잡고 있는 모양의 형상은 서로 다양성을 인정하고 존중하는 가운데 통합과 공존의 방식을 찾아온 아세안의 오랜 역사와 문화를 잘 드러내고 있다.

광화문광장이라는 공간에 설치된 폭 13m, 높이 3.4m의 이 거대한 예술작품은 그 자체로 풍부한 시각적 경험을 제공함과 동시에 누구나 쉽게 아세안 문화의 풍요로움과 그 문화예술적 가치에 대해 돌아보는 계기를 제공할 것이다. 대한민국의 중심인 광화문 광장이라는 상징적인 장소에 설치된 아세안 각국의 보석들은 한국과 아세안 국민들의 상호 이해와 소통, 상생을 상징하는 것으로 공공미술의 새로운 장을 열 것이다.

행사소개 ● 아세안 지역은 한국 국민들이 가장 많이 찾는 여행지이며, 한국에 거주하는 가장 많은 외국인들의 출신지역이기도 하다. 『아세안의 보석』은 이와 같이 한국민의 일상 깊숙이 들어와 있는 아세안 각국의 문화와 역사에 대해 좀 더 깊이 있는 이해를 제공하기 위해 기획되었다. ● 『아세안의 보석』은 아세안 10개국의 문화와 역사를 상징하는 랜드마크를 예술적으로 재해석하여 설치한 예술작품을 전시하는 한편, 다양한 문화예술체험은 물론 아세안에 대한 관광정보를 관람객들에게 함께 제공함으로써, 아세안 각국의 유구한 역사와 전통, 그리고 다채로운 문화를 이해하고 체험하고자 한다. 미술그룹 [내일]은 아세안 각국의 랜드마크를 재해석하여 새로운 조형물로 형상화시켜 광화문광장이라는 상징적인 공간에 배치함으로써 그 자체로 풍성한 볼거리를 제공함과 동시에 한국 국민들에게 아직 많이 알려지지 않은 아세안 각국의 문화 유산과 그 예술적 가치를 되돌아보게 한다. 특히, 올해는 한국과 아세안이 대화관계를 수립한지 25주년이 되는 해로, 서로 다른 역사와 문화를 가진 나라들이 협력과 공영의 미래를 만들어 가고자 하는 의지를 확인하는 정상회의를 한국에서 개최한다. 이 역사적 순간을 함께하는 『아세안의 보석』은 아세안의 유구한 역사와 전통이 어린 과거와 빠른 속도로 발전하고 있는 생동감 넘치는 현재, 그리고 나아가 아세안과 한국이 더불어 함께할 미래에 대해 생각해 볼 기회를 제공할 것이다. ■

About the Art Installation, Jewels of ASEAN ● The Jewels of ASEAN has been designed to symbolize the cultural significance of the ten representative landmarks, and to signify the partnership of peace, prosperity, and progress among ASEAN Member States. By connecting each landmark in a crown-like shape, this art installation illustrates ASEAN as the 'jewels' of a crown. ● Each ASEAN country holds diverse historical and cultural backgrounds, as can be seen in the wide-variety of symbols represented by each landmark, ranging from natural heritages and religious temples to modern skyscrapers. The installation expresses solidarity within cultural diversity, in other words, capturing the exquisite harmony of each uniquely beautiful landmark. The circular, hand-to-hand structure conveys the long history of ASEAN's joined efforts made towards integration and co-existence, with much respect for 'unity in diversity.' ● The 13 by 3.4 meter public art piece installed at the heart of the Gwanghwamun area will provide an exciting visual experience, and at the same time, offer the audience a chance to re-examine the abundant artistic and cultural value that each ASEAN Member State possesses.

About the Event ● ASEAN is now closer than ever to the hearts of Koreans, being not only the most popular destination for Korean tourists, but also contributing the largest number of foreign residents living in Korea. In light of this thriving relationship, the Jewels of ASEAN hopes to provide an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture of each ASEAN Member State. ● This program will feature the representative landmarks of ten ASEAN countries, artistically interpreted by a renowned public art project group named 'Tomorrow.' Alongside the large-scale art installation, various artistic and cultural activities and up-to-date tourist information will be offered to the public, in order to shed a new light on the historical depths, ancient traditions, and diverse cultures of ASEAN. ● Marking the 25th Anniversary of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Partnership, Korea will host the 2014 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit to reiterate the joint endeavor towards future cooperation and mutual prosperity, shared by countries each distinct by its history and culture. To join the festivities of this historical moment, the Jewels of ASEAN will give the audience a chance to experience the cultural abundance and fast-paced development of ASEAN, and look forward to the bright future that ASEAN and Korea will meet together. ■
