2014년 11월, 영은미술관은 독일작가 기획 개인전으로 토마스 분슈(Thomas Wunsch)전을 개최한다. 독일 작가 토마스 분슈(Thomas Wunsch)는 추상 사진 작가이며, 그의 사진은 다양한 주제를 추상적으로 묘사하고 있다. 이는, 우리의 일반적 인식을 넘어 작가에 의해 특별한 미적 가치가 부여 된 것이다. 그는 우연에 의한 순간을 정지된 화면으로 포착하여 표현하는데, 이는 신화를 탐구하거나, 끊임 없이 사물과 풍경을 관찰하는 작가의 일상적 작업 과정을 매우 정교하게 보여주는 특별한 결정체이기도 하다.

작품을 깊숙이 들여다 보면, 매우 교묘하게 감각적 지각을 자극한다. 우리의 눈은 빛에 의해 자극되며, 뇌는 이러한 자극을 해석하고 시각적 이미지를 형성하기 위한 정보 재생을 도와준다. 상상력은 우리의 감정과 인식, 경험의 필터를 사용하여 세상에 대한 우리의 뷰를 확장시켜간다. 뭇 사람들은 음악을 들을 때, 소리 자체만 들을 뿐, 그에 대한 감정을 전혀 느끼지 못하기도 하고, 또 다른 이들은 그와 반대로 음악적 감정의 전이를 그대로 느끼며 듣기도 하는데, 그것은 작품 이미지를 감상할 때 모든 이들의 개인적 견해에 따라 각각의 이미지 해석이 다른 것과도 일맥상통한다. 작가는 이 세상의 고정된 뷰어가 아닌 그 이상의 것을 보여주고자 하며, 그 뷰어는 곧 세상의 일부가 될 것이라 본다. 이는 "당신이 보게 되는 것이 곧 당신이 가지게 되는 것이다" 라는 사진의 기본 개념을 그대로 반추한다.

그의 사진은 자신의 이야기를 그대로 보여주는 마음의 지도와 같고, 단편소설과 장편소설, 혹은 기억의 조각들이 모여 하나의 스토리를 보여주는 퍼즐과도 같다. 각각의 작품은 개별적 매력을 표출하며, 작품 대부분은 모노크롬 흑백이 주를 이루는데, 일부는 매우 엄선된 회색과 색조, 강한 대비를 보여준다. 그의 작품들을 마주하는 순간, 우리 모두가 이미지 뷰어의 일부가 되는 친숙한 경험을 하게 될 것이며, 이는 매우 낭만적일 뿐만 아니라, 신비한 마법과도 같은 느낌을 준다. 또한 독일의 대표 음반사인 ECM에서 발매된 CD 중, 작가의 작품 속에 내재된 의미가 투영된 음반들 일부는 최근 몇 년간 그래미상 후보에 오르기도 하였다. 이번 영은미술관 기획전을 통해, 한국에서 촬영된 최근작을 중심으로 매우 독특한 감정의 리듬을 경험해 볼 수 있는 소중한 기회가 될 것이다. ■ 영은미술관

His photographs depict many different subjects and by making those subjects abstract - beyond recognition - he confers them a special aesthetic value. It is in these pictures that we encounter a kafkaesque symbolism and a very different kind of emotion. We can get a sense of time and space, of movement, of security - or a lack of those qualities. In life, a fine line separates departure and fleetingness. Thomas Wunsch freezes fleeting moments that are coincidental, not staged. Coincidence is a key quality of his pictures that enables him to explore the myth of the ordinary. He is also a gentle and discrete observer, authentic yet never voyeuristic. He is also an aesthete whose attention to detail and sophisticated processing result in highly distinctive photographs. Thomas Wunsch skillfully plays with our sensory perception. Our eyes are stimulated by light. The brain then interprets these stimuli and adds information to form a visual image. Imagination creates our view of the world by using the filters of our emotions, perceptions and experiences. It is like listening to music: some people feel nothing and hear only the sound of a song, while for others music sends shivers down their spine. It all depends on one’s personal view, and since his images are open to interpretation, Thomas Wunsch gives the viewer more than just a fixed view of the world. The viewer becomes part of his world. "What you see is what you get" is the photographer’s underlying concept. His photographs are like mind maps that tell a story of their own. One is reminded of short stories or novels or fragments of memory whose parts are put together like a puzzle. Each photograph displays its own charm. Some show very fine shades of grey or color, others very strong contrasts. Looking at his photographs is an intimate experience in which the images become a part of the viewer. Thomas Wunsch is not a romantic, but his photographs have a magical and mysterious quality. The German record label ECM publishes his photographs. Several CDs featuring his pictures were nominated for Grammy Awards in recent years.
