이번 11월 20일부터 12월 12일까지 김형관 개인전이 열린다. 그의 작업은 1차적인 컴퓨터 스케치 작업으로 시작하여 이를 캔버스 형태로 옮기면서 완성된다. 2012년 Lighthouse 전에 이어지는 이번 전시에서는 다양한 시각에서 바라본 집이라는 공간을 한층 더 깊게 표현하려는 작가의 시도를 엿볼 수 있다.

집은 주어진 공간이기도 하며 그것을 넘어서는 가능성을 지니기에 다방면의 관찰과 판단이 필요하다. 김형관에게 '보이는 것'이 어떻게 해서 그렇게 보이는 것이며, 또 그것은 그에게 어떤 의미를 부여하는 것일까, 이를 연구하는 것이 그의 작품에 담겨 있다. 작품을 만드는 과정에서 작가는 컴퓨터를 통해 2차원에서의 선과 평면을 다양한 3차원 시각으로 새롭게 체험하면서 집의 무한한 가능성을 느낀다. 여태껏 3차원의 세계에서 살아왔건만, 컴퓨터의 힘을 빌어서야 비로소 느끼지 못했던 자신의 '보금자리'의 새로운 모습을 발견하면서 우리는 이제까지 우물 안 개구리였다는 사실을 깨닫는다. ● 집은 우리 모두에게 중요한 존재다. 우리의 하루는 집에서 시작을 하여 집에서 끝을 맞이한다. 집은 생존의 필수조건인 의식주 중 하나 이기도 하지만, 하루 일과를 마치고 피곤한 심신을 재충전 할 공간을 마련해 주기도 한다. 다시 활기찬 모습으로 내일을 살아가기 위해 또 개인의 성장을 위한 디딤판 역할을 하는 집은 사람들에게 절대적으로 필요한 공간이다. 우리에게 거주공간을 마련해주는 집은 단순한 물리적인 공간을 넘는 가능성을 지니고 있다. 기껏 해봐야 사방의 콘크리트 벽돌로 이루어진 건물이 아니다. 집이라는 공간과 사람 사이에서 생성되는 관계는 매우 당연시 여겨지지만 소중하고 귀중하다. 우리의 일부, 경험의 한 조각으로써 한층 더 성숙한 인간으로 자랄 수 있도록 이끌어 준다. 마치 세상의 빛을 보기 전에 영양분을 섭취하며 성장을 하는 태아가 머무는 엄마의 뱃속처럼 말이다.

집은 우리 삶의 시작이며 종착지이다. 과거 유목민의 삶을 접고 정착을 하게 되면서 언제부턴가 인간은 일정한 장소를 지정해두고, 그것을 집이라 일컬으며, 하루라는 시간을 두고 마치 짧은 여행을 하는 것 같다. 집을 떠나는 것 같지만 결국에는 다시 돌아온다. 하루하루 보고 느낀 것을 품에 안고 돌아와 집에 쌓아두며 나의 일부로 만든다. 마치 새가 둥지를 두고 주변을 돌아다니면서 먹잇감을 발견하고, 둥지를 보강할 나뭇가지를 모아오듯이, 매일 보고 느끼는 경험을 보금자리로 가져옴으로써 더욱더 알차고 풍성한 집을 만들어 나간다. ● 그의 작품을 통해서 김형관은 가깝고 당연시 여겨지는 집의 존재와 중요성을 다시 한번 생각하며 그의 의미를 되짚어본다. 이전에 미처 느끼지 못한 집의 소중함과 공간 그 이상의 가능성을 느낄 수 있으며, 작가는 이를 회화와도 깊은 연관을 짓는다. 회화는 단순히 캔버스 위에 물감을 묻히는 행위 그 이상인, 자기표현과 자아성찰의 수단이며, 그림을 통해 우리는 한 사람의 열정과 성장 과정을 느낄 수 있다. 김형관의 작품은 회화가 개인으로 하여금 가늠할 수 없는 성장 가능성을 이끌어 낼 수 있음을 나타낸다. 그가 성장함과 동시에, 작품에도 그 성숙함이 묻어나는 것이다. 결국 회화 역시 집과 같은 존재 가치를 지니고 있는 것이다. 그의 경험, 생각들이 한데 모여 고스란히 캔버스 위에 펼쳐져 있으며 이를 통해 김형관의 무한한 가능성을 엿볼 수 있다. 김형관은 그림을 그리면서 끊임없이 성장할 수 있었고, 그의 '집' 역시 계속하여 성장할 것이다. ■ UNC 갤러리

Hyung Gwan Kim's solo exhibition opens from November 20th to December 12th. His work begins with basic computer sketches that carry on to a canvas as a final result. Continuing from Lighthouse exhibition in 2012, this show will present Kim's attempt in portrayal of a space within a house in many different perspectives. ● A house is a space that also holds a potential beyond its physical feature, so diverse angles of observation and judgment is necessary. His works show a study of understanding and accepting "what he sees" as a vision. While working on his paintings, Kim re-experiences the lines and planes of a two-dimensional world through three-dimensional visions and discovers an infinite potential of a house. We have been living in a three-dimensional world all along, yet we are finally realizing the new values within our dear home, thanks to technology. ● A house is important to all of us. Our day begins and ends at home. A house serves as one of three necessary survival needs (clothing, food and shelter), but it also provides a space to recover our exhausted body and mind at the end of a day. A house, which provides a fresh new day tomorrow as well as a platform for an individual growth and development, is an absolutely necessary space for its people. As it provides shelter, a house carries a potential beyond its physical space. It is not simply a building of concrete walls and bricks. The relationship between a house and a person is taken for granted yet precious and indispensable. It becomes part of our experiences that enables us to grow up as mature individuals. Like a mother's womb where a baby takes nutrients and grows before stepping outside. ● A house is our life's start and an end. After a long period of nomadic life, our humanity began to settle in an area, calling it home. It seems as if every day, we engage ourselves in a short travel. We head out and return. Every day we collect all sensory experiences and information from outside world and bring them home, which become part of us. Like a bird searching for food and collecting branches for its nest, we are able to expand our home with enriching experiences as resource. ● Through his work, Kim thinks over the importance of a house that we take for granted and reflects on its value. We can experience the value of a house we fail to realize as well as its immeasurable possibility, and Kim suggests its deep connection with a painting as well. A painting can be described as something beyond putting paints on a canvas surface. It is a measure of self-expression and self-contemplation, and through one's paintings we get a glimpse of a person's passion and growth. Kim's works suggest that a painting is capable of bringing out an individual's potential for growth. As he grows up, his paintings reflect such maturity. After all, a painting as well carries significant value and identity. His experiences and thoughts are assembled and expressed on a canvas, through which we can get a sense of his infinite potential. As he continued to paint, he was able to grow up as he continued to paint, and his 'house' will continue to grow as well. ■ UNC gallery
