순환 : 만물의 걸음걸이

우리는 어디에서 왔는가. 어디를 향해 가는가. 이는 아마도 가장 흔한 질문이자, 가장 오래된 질문일 것이다. 세상에 존재하는 모든 만물 중 변하지 않는 것은 없다. 결코 변하지 않는 것처럼 보이는 바위나 쇳덩어리도 결국은 풍화되고 녹스는 변화의 과정을 거치기 마련이다. 결국 모든 우주 만물은 변하는 것이 당연하지만, 옛 사람들은 그 속에서도 달라지지 않는 어떠한 규칙을 찾고자 했다. ● 그런 옛 사람들의 관찰과 노력을 통해 발견된 것이 바로 지구를 둘러싼 행성들의 움직임이다. 지구는 태양과 수성, 금성, 화성, 목성, 토성과 어우러져 있고, 옛 사람들은 이 행성들과지구의 거리 변화에 따라 물(水), 쇠(金), 나무(木), 불(火), 흙(土)의 기운이 달라진다고 생각했다. 즉 우주의 움직임이 우리를 구성하는 원소들에 영향을 미친다는 것이다. 하여 역학에서는 이런 다섯가지 원소들의 순환을 일러 우주 만물의 걸음걸이라 말하기도 하였다. 여기서 걸음걸이란, '만물이 흘러가는 방향', 곧 '만물의 상태가 변화하는 양상'을 가리킨다.

이번 작업은, 다소 뻔하지만 살아있는 자들이라면 한 번은 생각하게 되는 질문에서 시작되었다. "과연 우리는 어디서 왔으며 어디로 흘러가는가?" ● '나'는 우연이라고 말하기에는 너무나도 기막힌 우주의 변천과정에서 생겨났고, 길면 백여 년 간을 그런 기막힘 속에 살다가, 죽으면 땅에 묻힐 것이다. 그리하여 '나'를 덮고 있던 가죽은 '흙'이 될 것이고, 몸 안에 있던 수분은 땅 속으로 스며들어 '물'이 되거나, 증발하여 '비'가 될 것이다. 흙이나 물로 돌아간 '나'는 모든 생물들의 영양원이 될 것이며, 만물을 잉태하게 돕는 씨앗이 될 것이다. 그러면 나는 '흙'이자 '물'이며 '나무'이자 '꽃'이고, 그 풀을 먹고 자란 '동물', 그 살을 먹고 자란 또 다른 '동물', 그 동물이 죽어서 다시 돌아가는 '불'이자 '쇠'일 것이다. 결국 인간의 생성과 소멸 역시 우주의 순환 속에서 이루어지는 셈이다. ● 작업을 위해 버려진 오브제들을 채집하였다. 이 오브제들은 자신의 의지와 상관없이 필요로 인해 '생'하였지만 그 쓰임을 다하고 '불필요'가 되어 거리로 나온 것들이다. 이렇듯 인간에 의해 인위적으로 생겨난 것처럼 보일지라도, 세상에 난 모든 것들의 원천은 결국 목(木), 화(火), 토(土), 금(金), 수(水)이며, 다시 그것으로 돌아갈 것이다. 이는 사람과 동물이 다르지 않으며, 식물과 사물 역시 다르지 않음을 의미한다. 自他不二. 너와 내가 둘이 아니라는 것은 사람과 사람 사이에만 적용되는 것은 아니다. ■ 천근성

우리는 (모두는 아니다) 가끔 조용한 보행자들을 바라보는 기회를 갖곤 하는데 보폭이 너무 크거나 오히려 너무작아 또는 걸음이 내는 소리가 너무 크거나 너무작아 주의를 기울인 이들조차 보행자들이 지나간 방향을 가늠하지 못할때가 많다 그렇다손 치더라도 조용한 보행자들의 여정을 걱정하는 이들은 아무도 없다 어디로 가야할지 모르는 얼굴로 남의 속으로 들어가지 않는 육신으로 행렬을 기다리는 거냐고 세계에 있는 모든 너*에게 묻고 싶어 하는 이들이 땅을 뒤채고 있을뿐이다 ■ 이록현

Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? These are perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions as well as being one of the oldest ones. There is not one thing in this world that does not change. Seemingly unchangeable materials, such as rocks or metals, also undergo the process of changes through weathering or rusting. It is only natural that everything changes over time but the ancestors have tried to find the overarching, unchanging patterns or rules in these changes. ● What they were able to find out as the result of their long observation and effort was the movement and relationship of surrounding planets and the Earth. The Earth is in harmony with the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Old people believed that depending on the change of distances of each planet from the Earth, that the energy of each planet which effects the Earth changes; water for Mercury, metal for Venus, fire for Mars, tree for Jupiter, and earth for Saturn. In other word, the movement of the Universe was believed to be effective on the elements, which consists of our body. Thus, the ancient study of Ying and Yang stated that the circulation of these five elements was the gait of the entire Universe. What 'gait' means here is the 'direction where everything flows to', and thus 'the rule of how everything changes over time'. ● As stereotypical as it may sound, this specific series of work began with the same question that every must have asked at least once in their lives, "So, where do we come from and where are we going?" ● "I" was created through such a magnificent process of transition of the Universe, so sophisticated and systematic to say that such the process was just coincidental. I will survive through this wonder maybe for a hundred years, if that long. Then I will be buried so that my body would turn back into earth, my bodily fluids into water. As earth and water, I will be the nutrient for upcoming lives and help them flourish. Then I will be earth and water, trees, flowers and grass, the animals who feasted on the grass, other animals who feasted on those smaller animals, then the fire and metal that these animals turn to after death. Humans are no different as being inside the circulation of the Universe when it comes to generation and extinction.  ● I collected wastes and thrown away objects. These objects were "born" out of the necessity of humans, without their own will. Then they were used up and became "unnecessary" to lose their place in this world. As artificial it may seem, even humans inventions are eventually tree, fire, earth, metal, or water and they will return to that form once again after a long time. This means that there is no exception in this rule whether on humans or animals, plants or objects. The body and earth are not two separate things. The phrase 'you and I are not two' does not only apply in human relationship but with everything, the whole entirety. ■ 천근성
