환 幻, the karmic ghost

"엄마! 도깨비들이 진짜 세상에 있어요?" "물론이야, 사람들은 자기 안에 도깨비를 키우기도 해." 환 (幻), the karmic ghost : 허깨비 같은 것. 쉼 없이 변화하는 만물의 속성에 닿아있다. 눈. 코. 입. 귀. 살갗. 의식 같은 내부의 감각들이 바깥의 모양, 냄새, 맛, 소리, 촉감, 생각을 만나 쌓여가며 집적된 데이터들은 스스로의 이미지를 무한 복제하면서 호불호 안팎으로 굴절되고 혼동된 환_세계를 만든다. 끌어당기거나 밀쳐내기 같은 생명체간의 이런 경향과 특징들은 후대에 대물림 되곤 한다. 그러는 동안 마음과 행위의 주체라고 말하는 자아는 빈번하게 허깨비와 마주한다. ● 작가의 6번 째 개인전 『환(幻), the karmic ghost』은 여러 해 독립문 영천시장과 인근 주변을 오가며 받은 사회적 시각적 영감 위에 이뤄졌다. 존재감을 상실한 저 사물들이나 심볼은 현재와 조우하며 내밀한 역사의 순환을 묵묵히 웅변한다. 그들은 거울인양 우리들의 자화상을 반사하듯 질문을 던진다: 그대가 사로잡혀 달려가는 그곳은 어디인가? 그대가 가려는 그곳은 생명체들 간에 만들었던 태초의 약속을 어떤 방식으로 이뤄내는 곳인가? 그곳에 도달하기 위해 당신은 어떤 일들을 할 수 있는가? 그리고 언제 당신은 그 일을 시작하고 이뤄낼 것인가? 나는 환의 망각 속으로 깊이 묻혀질 저 질문들을 우리 곁으로 다시 데려다 주는 시각적 기호로서 작품을 제작했다. ■ 김은하

"Mom, are there ghosts anywhere?" "Surely, people grow them inside own self" 환 hwan幻, the karmic ghost : something like a phantom. It is the property adjacent to things, which is changing ceaselessly. With the accumulation of the data as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin, and consciousness meet the shapes, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and ideas it multiplies infinitely by copying own images yet categorized in likes-n-dislikes, bending in-n-out, thus creating the chaotic realm of hwan. Attracting and pushing aside among species these leaning characteristics reincarnate through heirs asking the legacy. Meanwhile, the 'self', known as the independent subject of mind and body; encounters the ghostly phantom quite often. ● Visual language of hwan(幻), the karmic ghost, my 6th solo exhibition in 2014, have been inspired and built up when coming-n-going around Doknipmun Yongchun Market. The images of deserted objects and past symbols encounter the world now and speak in silence their secret history. They reflect like a mirror if it were our self-portraits and play inquiries: What kind of place is that you running to? How would the place work out for the commitment you made in the very beginning of the world? What things would you do in order to get there? And, when could you start doing it and expect things done? I intend the works are visual signs taking us back to these questions that could be too easily buried away otherwise deep in hwan world, the oblivious phantom in us. ■ KIMEUNHA
