Pretty When I Cry

이 전시는 작가 맹희원의 드로잉, 회화, 그리고 애니메이션 작품들을 함께 선보이며, 이를 통해 작가가 탐구하는 여성의 정체성과 젊은 여성의 이미지를 살펴본다. ● 본 전시의 작품에서 작가는 고전 서양 미술사와 대중문화에 투사된 젊은 여성들의 전형적인 묘사를 인용하여 어여쁜 소녀의 가상적인 이미지를 표현하였다. 특히 18세기 유럽 신고전주의의 초상화와 순 정만화에 쓰인 다양한 이미지들을 패러디 함으로써 기존의 젊은 여성에 대한 이상적인 묘사, 그리고 과거와 현대의 대중들이 가지고 있는 미적 기준을 제고한다. ● 소녀들은 거부할 수 없은 묘한 매력을 발산하며 팜므파탈 같이 치명적인 면모를 보인다. 작품 속의 주인공들은 매혹적인 눈빛으로 남을 유혹하고, 뮤즈, 반이, 반괴로 변시하며 반전의 놀라움을 선사하 여 관객들의 시선을 사로잡는다. 이 전시 제목인 'Pretty When I Cry'는 어메리칸 싱오송라이터인 라 나 델 레이의 (Lena Del Rey) 노래에 영감을 받아, 작품 속의 어둡고 아름다운 소녀와 그 슬픈 감정 을 표현하였다. ■ 민유진

This exhibition brings together a selection of works ranging from drawings, painting to cartoon sketches by Maing Hee-won. It races the artist's exploration of female identity and representations of young women. ● Maing depicts fictional images of pretty girls, sourced from archetypal portrayals of young women in classical Western art and popular culture. In particular, Maing borrows imagery from 18th century European neo-classical portraits and soon-jung manwha- which she parodies to challenge ideal depictions of female youth and beauty in history as well as in the current popular imagination. ● Girls featured in the artworks evoke femme fatale traits of irresistibly beautiful, yet destructive women. Some girls entice viewers with come hither look in their eyes, while others transform into nymphs- half-human, half-monstrous creatures that are beguiling and disturbing. Maing approaches the melancholic beauty she finds in them by the nuance expressed in the exhibition title 'Pretty When I Cry' based on the song by the American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey. ■ Yujin Min
