길 위의 노래 Song of the Road

한 편의 시와 같은 목탄 드로잉 작업을 통해 삶에 대한 개인적 관점을 진솔하게 보여주는 허윤희의 열여섯 번째 개인전『길 위의 노래』가 KAIST Reseach & Art에서 열린다. 독일에서 9년간 활동하고 2004년 국내로 돌아온 허윤희는 섬세한 감수성으로 바라본 세계를 표현적이면서도 절제된 시각언어로 구현한다. 이번 전시에서도 200호 사이즈의 신작 목탄 드로잉을 포함한 여러 점의 작업들과 2012년 독일, 베를린에서 있었던 벽면 드로잉 과정을 영상에 담은 비디오 작업을 함께 선보인다.

허윤희는 우리 삶의 여러 모습들, 그리고 그 속에서 얽혀 있는 여러 관계들을 나무, 꽃, 잎, 씨앗, 배 등과 같은 여러 친숙한 소재를 사용하여 특유의 감성으로 표현해낸다. 인간의 구체적 삶에는 만남과 이별, 탄생과 죽음 등 다양한 사건과 그에 따르는 여러 감정들이 존재한다. 허윤희는 이러한 삶의 다양한 모습을 대면하면서 얻게 되는 감정들에 주목한다. 그리고 이에 대한 깊이 있는 사유를 이끌어낸다. 인간이 갖게 되는 설렘과 기쁨, 슬픔과 외로움과 같은 감정들은 개인적인 것이면서도 보편적인 것이기에 허윤희의 작업을 바라보는 것은 타인의 일기를 들춰보는 것과 같지만 결국은 우리 자신과 만나는 경험이다. 이번에 전시되는 '숲의 위로', '발', '나무와 나무 사이' 같은 작품들에서 역시 자신의 감정과 생각들을 예리하게 끄집어내고 포착해낸다. 2012년 베를린에서 있었던 벽화 제작과정을 담은 영상작업에서는 작가가 작품을 장소 특정적으로 어떻게 소화해내는지가 잘 엿보인다. 이동시킬 수 없는 난로가 놓인 공간과 목탄으로 그려낸 벽화가 마치 하나가 된 듯 조화롭게 엮인다. 긴 막대기 끝에 달린 목탄으로 벽을 하나하나 메꿔가는 작가의 모습에선 강한 에너지가 느껴진다.

허윤희 작가가 주로 사용하는 목탄은 가장 자연적인 회화 재료라고 할 수 있다. 손으로 그리고 직접 문질러 지울 수 있기에 작가의 신체와 가장 가깝게 위치할 수 있는 재료이기도 하다. 그 원초적인 재료는 작가의 심상이나 생각들을 자유자재로 표현하고자 할 때 적합하다. 여러 번의 계산과 객관적 분석이 준비되어야만 사용할 수 있는 도구가 아니기에 작가의 표현적 욕구들이 즉각적으로 발현될 수 있게 해준다. 또한 그려진 목탄이 지워질 때 그것은 영원한 사라짐이 아니라 하나의 흔적으로 여전히 화폭에 남아 있게 된다. 그럼으로써 그 위에 덧입힌 새로운 이미지들은 깊이이자 두께를 갖게 된다. 앞으로도 계속해서 허윤희는 목탄이라는 매체를 가지고 삶 속에서 만나게 되는 여러 경험들을 가볍지 않은 무게로 표현해낼 것이다. ■ 정소라

...2012년 8월 독일 베를린의 한 레지던시 프로그램에 참가하였다. 한 달 동안 그 곳에서 머물면서 보고 느끼고 생각한 것들을 갤러리에 대형 벽화로 그릴 계획이었다. 그런데 갤러리 벽면 중앙에 난로가 떡하니 자리 잡고 있는 게 아닌가. 난로는 동베를린의 거의 모든 실내에 있었다. 그곳에서 난로는 길고 추운 겨울을 나기 위해 필수적인 것이었다. 어떤 벽화를 그린다 해도 난로 때문에 방해가 될 것이 뻔했다. 며칠간 곰곰이 생각한 끝에 난로를 소재로 벽화를 그리기로 결정하였다. 난로는 내게 처음에는 장애물 같았지만 결국에는 빛나는 주연이 되었다. 입체적인 난로를 중심으로 양 벽과 천장에 대형 목탄 벽화를 그렸다. 그리고 이 과정을 비디오 영상으로 기록하였다... ■ 허윤희

Yun-hee Huh's sixteenth solo exhibition『Song of the Road』, which shows honestly her personal view for life with charcoal drawing like a piece of poetry, will be held in KAIST Research & Art. She who stayed and worked in Germany for 9 years and came back to Korea in 2004 looks at the world with a delicate sensitivity. She expresses it with expressive and careful visual language. Several new charcoal drawings and a video work which includes the process of the wall drawings in the Berlin, Germany will be displayed in this exhibition. She represents many different views of our life and entangled relationships within them with familiar materials such as tree, flower, leaves, seed and boat. Various events like the meeting and farewell, the birth and death and concomitant emotions to them exist in human life. She pays attention to her emotions felt by facing these various aspects of life. In addition, she draws thoughtful reasons with regard to them. Since feelings of human including romance and pleasure, sadness and loneliness are personal and universal, seeing her work is like looking at others' diary and is finally experience to meet ourselves. She sharply catches and elicits her thoughts and feelings in her works like 'Consolation', 'A Foot' and 'Between Trees'. People can notice how the artist capture features of place through a video work which shows the process of the wall drawings at the gallery in the Berlin, Germany. As if place with a fixed stove and wall drawing with charcoal constitute a whole, it looks harmonious. Strong energy is felt in the artist's actions as she plaster a wall with charcoal on a stick. Charcoal is natural artists material. Since an artist can draw freehand with it and rub it out with hand, it is the closest material to an artist's body. The natural material is suitable for an artist to express his/her imagery or thought. Because it is not an instrument that need objective analysis, an artist can actualize desire to represent his/her feeling promptly with it. Besides, when drawn charcoal is erased, it is not the permanent disappearance but marks left in a canvas. Thereby overlaid new images on those marks have depth and thickness. The artist, Yun-hee Huh is moderately representing diverse experiences of her life with charcoal now and for ever. ■ SOLA JUNG

...In August 2012, I participated in a Residency Program in Berlin, Germany. I had a plan to draw a large wall painting of what I have seen, felt, thought during my one month stay there. But then, to a surprise, there was a stove right in the center of that wall. Stove is something almost all household has in their home in Berlin. It is a fundamental item for them to survive the long, cold winter days. And, so it was obvious the stove will be a disturbance to my drawing. Over couple of days, I gave some thought. And, I finally decided I will then make a large wall painting subject to a stove. Finally, I realized that something which I thought would be an obstacle actually turned out to be the most valuable asset to the painting. I drew a huge mural using charcoal along each sides of the actual stove in the center of the wall. And, I recorded this whole step with a video... ■ HUHYUNHEE
