두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2014년 10월 9일 부터 11월 6일까지 포스트 식민주의적 관점으로 동시대를 바라보는 이완의 개인전『made in』을 진행한다. 이완은 자본주의 시스템에 의해 만들어진 생산물을 인간 개인의 노동을 착취한 결과로 보며 이와 같은 거대 구조가 개인과 집단에게 어떤 영향을 미치고 변화시키는지에 대해 주목한다.

「made in」시리즈는 동시대의 현상들을 경제학적 관점과 역사적 사실들을 토대로 이해하려는 시도로서 신 자유주의 경제 체제 하에서의 국가와 국가간의 관계에서부터 개인에게 이르는 모든 인과관계를 거시적 관점으로 이해하고자 하는 작가의 의도가 담겨있다. 이번 전시에는 작가가 대만과 미얀마 그리고 캄보디아와 태국에 직접 체류하면서 그 곳의 특산물을 직접 생산하는 과정을 영상에 담은「made in」시리즈 네 편과 두 점의 드로잉을 전시할 예정이다.

「made in taiwan」은 '한 스푼의 설탕' 생산하기 위해 대만 외곽의 사탕수수 농장에서 2개월간 직접 생활하는 모습을 담은 비디오 작품이다. 설탕은 과거 대만 경제 성장에 원동력이 되었던 수출 상품이자 일본이 대만을 식민 지배했던 시기의 대표적 수탈 품목이다. 또한 작가가 직접 캄보디아에서 쌀을 재배하는 모습과 태국에서 비단을 생산하는 모습, 그리고 미얀마에서 금을 가공하는 과정을 담은 영상을 통하여, 지금까지 제 3세계에 남아있는 식민주의적 잔재들이 오늘날 신 자유주의 경제 구조 내에서 어떻게 작동되고 있는 지 사실적으로 보여주고 있다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Lee Wan's "Made In" from October 9th through November 6th, a solo exhibition that looks at contemporary society through a post-colonial perspective. Lee Wan views the products made within the capitalist system as results of human labor exploitation and focuses on how large structures like capitalism influence and transform individuals and communities. ● "Made In" series is an attempt to understand contemporary phenomena using economic and historic facts as foundations, and it contains the artist's intention to understand nations, international relations, as well as individual human relationships that are under a new liberalist structure from a macro point of view. This exhibition will comprise of four parts of the "Made In" series, which is a video work containing footages of the artist himself actually in the process of producing specialty items while staying in places like Taiwan, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand, as well as two drawings. ● In order to produce "one spoon of sugar," the artist lived and labored for two months in the sugar cane farms in the outskirts of Taiwan, culminating in the video piece Made In Taiwan. In Taiwan's past, sugar export was the driving force of Taiwan's rapid economic development, as well as the major item of exploitation during Japanese colonization of Taiwan. Through the footages of the artist cultivating rice in Cambodia, manufacturing silk in Thailand, and processing gold in Myanmar, Lee presents an honest view into how the vestiges of colonialism in Third World countries are currently operating within their new liberalist economies. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
