궁금허요-잉 Wonder-ing: Damyang

담양10경이라고 했다. 하지만 담양에 꼭 그 열 가지 풍경만 있는 것은 아닐텐데... 여태 조명되지 않았던 광경들을 찾고 싶었다. 그 안에서 생활하면서 같이 변해 온 사람들과 풍경. 이야기가 있는 풍경들을 전시공간 안으로 들여와 사람들과 함께 계속 찾아낸다.

담양이 고향인 누군가의 어린시절 이야기를 전해들었다: 친구와 해가 지고 달이 뜨도록 신나게 놀고 집에 가는 길, 달빛에 드리워진 거대한 대밭 그림자, 살랑바람이 부추기자 쏴아-아-아-아-아- 달려들었다고, 너무나 무서워 콩닥이는 가슴을 안고 냅다 뛰어서 집에 갔었다고. 단편 동화의 한 장면 같은 추억이다. ● '대가 있는 곳마다 마을이 있고, 마을이 있는 곳마다 대가 있었다'는 담양은 1973년 개발제한구역으로 지정되어 옛 모습을 꽤 많이 간직하고 있었음에도 최근 여러 변화의 바람으로 그 풍광이 조금씩, 하지만 빠른 속도로 변하고 있다. 처음에는 죽물시장이 대나무박물관이 된 것을 보곤 조금이나마 체감하는 것 같았지만 담양에서 머무는 몇 개월 사이에 눈 앞에서 수시로 변하는 풍경을 보았다.

계절이 바뀌었고, 오가는 사람들이 달라졌으며, 없던 건물이 생겨났다. 눈 앞의 광경은 진행형 ~ing 인데 생활하며 주민들로 부터 알게 된 이곳, 담양 향교리는 기억 조각들의 집합이었다. ● 변해온 과정 하나하나를 기억하는 주민들이 보는 동네는 어떤 모습일까. 나지막이 "죽물시장, 좋았제' 하는 어르신들 옆에 앉아 듣는 담양의 옛 풍경은 너무나도 궁금한 것이었다. 이젠 그 모습을 볼 수 없으니 그저 상상해 볼 수 밖에.

"궁금허요-잉.' 정말로 궁금해서 이야기해달라 청했다. 대밭, 관방제림, 죽물시장, 관방천, 죽녹원, 향교에 대해 물었고 어르신들은 언제나 더 풍성한 이야깃 거리로 화답하여 주었다. 역사책에 차마 담기지 않을 당신들의 소소한 삶의 이야기를 입가에 옅은 미소를 띄우며, 또는 먼 선을 바라보며, 가끔은 언성을 높이며, 타지에서 온 손녀 뻘에게 전해주곤 하였다. 눈 앞 주차공간이 대밭이 되고, 두 발로 서 있는 포장도로가 빗물이 흐르던 깊은 도랑이 되었다... ● '옛날 모습'은 관계의 본질을 보여준다고 생각한다. 사람과 사람, 사람과 자연, 자연과 자연. 그들의 삶, 역사, 그리고 나의 삶. 그 본질과 마주했을 때 비로소 나의 모습을 반추해 볼 수 있게 된다. 아침에 눈을 떠서 마주치는 모든 것들이 그 '옛날 모습'에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 그 모습을 살았던 이들과 동시대를 향유한다는 것은 시야의 풍경이 정적인 것이 아니라 항상 변하는 중임을, 그렇기에 매 순간, 모든 모습이 지나온 시간 위에 실재한다는 것을 생각하게 했다. ■ 이유현

I heard from someone recalling his childhood in Damyang: On the way home, after playing with friends until after dusk, the huge shadow of bamboo field sprung at him with a hair-raising sound as a breeze encouraged it. Scared out of his mind, he ran for his life home. ● Damyang scenery used to be described as 'villages being where the bamboos are; bamboos being where the villages are.' Although Damyang kept its vista for a long time since the designation of limited development district in 1973, the landscape recently has been going through changes slowly but surely. The changes seemed fairly dramatic at first to see how the Bamboo Market turned into Bamboo Museum, however; the contemporary changes in the landscape were witnessed during the 3-month stay. While the scenery is constantly in progressive changes (-ing), the place, Hyanggyo-ri of Damyang is an assembly of memories. ● How would the village look like in the eyes of residents, who remember the changes the place went through? As the elderly residents uttered, "The Bamboo Market used to be great', I could not help but wonder the scenery of Damyang in the past. With no visible remains, I could only follow the traces from stories. ● "Wonder-ing'. I sincerely wondered how it used to be like. About bamboo fields, Bamboo Market, Gwanbang stream, Juknokwon (Bamboo Garden), Hyanggyo (Confucian temple) and more, the elderlies had so much to share. They told their trivial life stories to me, who is like their grandchild, sometimes with faint smiles; sometimes staring at a distant mountain; sometimes in rough voices. While listening, the parking lot would revive into bamboo fields and the paved road would turn into deep gutters for rain to run down. ● I believe the 'scenes from past' show the essential relationships: human to human; human to nature; nature to nature; their lives; history; my life. Only when such essence was faced, I could reflect myself at last. Everything encountered in a daily life has its root in the 'scenes from past'. ● To savor the coevality with the ones who lived in such scenes from the past is to remind that the landscape in sight is never still, and that every moment and every spectacle exist on the passed time. ■ J.
