보이지 않는 도시

이탈로 칼비노의『보이지 않는 도시들』에서 우리는 각양각색의 도시들을 만난다. 베니스의 여행자 마르코 폴로는 타타르 제국의 황제 쿠빌라이 칸에게 자신이 여행한 환상적인 도시들을 섬세하게 설명한다. 칼비노는 이 두 주인공의 대화를 통해 도시를 하나의 유기적 생명체로 심리적, 물리적, 감각적 상태로 그리며, 그렇게 그려진 환상의 도시들은 우리가 살아가는 도시라는 공간이 어떤 의미를 가지는지에 관한 통찰과 새로운 관점을 제시한다. ● 도시는 우리에게 예측된 길로 인도한다. 또한 그 안에서 우리는 스스로 행동할 수 있는 자유를 부여한다. 도시라는 공간은 인간에게 보이지 않는 영향을 미친다. 이번 전시는 서울을 대표하는 창작 레지던시 금천과 난지 미술창작 레지던시에 참여하고 있는 6개 도시-서울, 로테르담, 부다페스트, 바르샤바, 파리, 베를린의 작가들로 구성되었다. 예술가들은 여러 국가, 도시에 있는 레지던시 프로그램에 지원하고 세계를 경험한다. ● 수많은 도시에 있는 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하는 이유는 무엇이며 프로그램을 통해 무엇을 얻어갈까. 단순히 여행이 목적이 될 수도 있고, 여러 문화를 접함으로써 얻는 자기성찰과 더 나아가 심오한 작업 과정이 진행될 수도 있다. 작가들은 한 도시에서 짧게는 3개월이라는 시간을 보내면서 적응하고, 각자의 경험으로부터 나온 지도(작업)를 전개해 나간다. 작가들은 저마다 공간을 해석하는 작업으로 낯선 도시에 대한 작업 또는 전시 공간이 위치한 문래동이라는 장소 특정성을 이용한 작업을 진행한다. 각자 주관적인 지도들이 놓여지고 이어지면서 조각조각 파편처럼 흩어진 도시에 대한 인식들이 모여 한 공간에서 충돌하고 흡수된다. 전시 공간은 각양각색의 다양성을 가지고 있으면서 서로 다른 질서에 따라 배치되어 개인의 작업, 작업 간의 경계, 하나의 전시가 만들어진다. 이 도시에서 체류하면서 제작되어진 여러 도시에서 온 작가들의 작업들을 보며 그들에게 도시 공간이 미쳤을 영향과 그 의미는 무엇일지 생각해보길 기대한다. ■ 이혜림

We meet various types of cities in Invisible Cities(Le città invisibili) by Italo Calvino. Marco Polo, Italian traveler from Venice, expounds about fantastic cities he discovered to Kublai Khan, the aging and busy Emperor. Calvino depicts a city as an organic life form through conversations between the two figures. The fantastic cities described in this way present an insight into and a new perspective toward what meaning the space of a city we inhabit has. ● The city guides us to a predictable path, lending freedom to act autonomously to us within its space. The space of a city has an invisible impact on humans. This exhibition brings together works by artists from six cities – Seoul, Rotterdam, Budapest, Warsaw, Paris, and Berlin – who participated in artist residency programs offered by Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon and SeMA Nanji Residency. The artists join such residence programs held in many cities and countries, thereby experiencing the world. ● Why did they join such residence programs and what did they gain from those programs? Their participation may be simply for a travel, or to have self-reflection through contact with diverse cultures thus deepening their work. The artists develop their work (map) from their experience, staying in a city for at least three months and adapting themselves to the city. The artists execute site-specific work based on Mullae-dong where the exhibition space is located, interpreting the space in their own manner. As each subjective map is placed and put together, their perceptions of a city scattered like fragments are collected and absorbed while colliding with one another. An exhibition space has diversity and creates an individual work, the boundary between works, and an exhibition through rearrangements in accordance with different order. Appreciating works from many cities the artists produced while staying in the city, you are expected to contemplate what influence this urban space had on the artists and its meaning. ■ LEEHYERIM
