Space Shift

이 프로젝트는 3채널의 비디오 영상 설치이다. 첫 영상은 서울의 대모산과 석관동 일대를 촬영한 것이다. 일상의 사실적 기록으로 보이는 이 영상은 특정 시간과 공간이라는 선택된 상황을 담고 있다. 이 영상은 그 콘텍스트가 전혀 다른 문화적 공간과 시간에 옮겨졌고, 이것을 본 선택된 그룹의 사람들은 그들의 관념과 상상을 통해 여러 새로운 생각을 구성하고 그 복합적인 개념들이 가지치기해 제2, 제3의 영상 재료를 만들어냈다.

한 그룹은 쾰른에 사는 독일인들로 한국에 한 번도 가본 적이 없는 사람들이다. 이들은 해석할 코드가 없는 상태에서 본 서울의 단편적 이미지들에 관해 그들의 문화적 배경 안에서 최대한의 지식과 관념을 동원해 어디까지나 추측일 뿐인 상상을 통해 의미 발견을 시도한다. ● 위의 두 영상을 듣고 본 다른 그룹은 서울에 사는 한국인들로 독일에 한 번도 가보지 않은 사람들이다. 이들은 자기들이 속해 있는 문화, 사회 안에 있는 사람들과 환경에 대해서 독일인들보다는 더 많은 해석 가능한 코드를 지니고 있지만 다른 문화권의 사람들과 마찬가지의 이질감도 가지고 있다. 또한, 이들의 인식에 독일인들의 생각들이 덧붙고 섞이면서 이들이 보는 관점들이 이동하며, 이들은 이 친숙하기도 이질적이기도 한 문화적 코드를 새로이 구성한다.

이 세 개의 영상이 동시에 갤러리, 즉 제4 공간에 펼쳐질 때 관람자들은 자연스럽게 새로운 제3 그룹의 일원이 되어 이 상황들을 또 달리 흡수하며 그들의 생각을 제시하고 구성하게 된다. 이렇듯 영상의 공간 이동은 계속적으로 새로운 아이디어를 만들어내는 활발한 문화적 움직임으로 작용한다. ■

This project is a 3-channel video installation. The first video featuring the Daemosan and Seokwan-dong area in Seoul. This video - that seems to be a realistic documentation of the everyday - encapsulates specific situations at a specific space and time. This video is transferred to a space in a different cultural context where selected groups of people watching this video conjure up new ideas through their notions and imagination, creating material for other videos with their complex conceptions. ● One group of people are Germans in Cologne who have never visited Korea. They try to discover the import of the fragmentary images of Seoul shown to them without any code for interpretation, only through their assumption and imagination and with their knowledge and idea within their cultural background. ● Another group of people watching two videos above are Koreans living in Seoul who have never been to Germany. They have more codes available to interpret people and surroundings in their own culture and society, but also feel a sense of difference to their own culture, like those in other cultural area feel. When German people's ideas are added and mixed with their perception, their perspectives change, forming new, familiar yet unfamiliar cultural codes. ● When these three videos are displayed at the same time in a gallery, the fourth space, viewers present and constitute their own ideas, absorbing lots of situations in another fashion as members of the new third group. Likewise, the three videos are in a dynamic cultural movement that brings continuously new ideas through space movement. ■
