비결정 고형물질 세계로의 투명한 여행 ● First expression, 정수경 작가는 모스크바에서 스태인드 글라스(Stained Glass)를 처음 본 순간 무대디자인을 전공하고자 했던 마음은 유리작업으로 옮겨졌다. 그 후 5년 동안 유리를 전공했지만 열악한 기자재로 인해 테크닉은 배우지 못했으나 그 대신 기초수업을 탄탄하게 배웠다. 부족한 유리 공부를 보완하기 위해 다시 영국으로 유학을 떠났다. 왕립예술학교(Royal College of Art)에서 공부하며 본격적으로 유리 조형예술가의 길이 시작되었다. ● 작가는 2005년 제24회 대한민국 미술대전 공예부분에서 본상 후보작을 받았다. 당시에는 프로덕트 디자인(product design) 을 전공하는 중이었고, 한국민속촌에서 본 전통적인 물건을 관찰하고 몇 가지를 선택한 후 유리로 조형화하였다. 달걀꾸러미, 맷돌, 다듬이, 부채 모양 등으로 고유한 골격은 유지한 채 디자인과 예술의 중간 영역으로 표현하였다. 유리의 투명성과 무색의 특징을 가지고 전통의 오브제를 미니멀하게 변용한 시도가 돋보였다. 이렇듯 작가에게는 사물의 특성을 이끌어내는 고감각적인 감성과 유리라는 특수한 재료로 환치하는 테크닉을 갖추고 있었다. 이렇듯 실험적인 작업과정을 겪은 경험을 바탕으로 RCA에서 배웠던 기법을 토대로 개념들을 구체화하며 본격적인 작업을 발표하였다. ● Second expression, 작가가10여 년의 유학생활을 했던 도시는 모스크바와 런던이었다. 도시에서 거리를 다니며 본 건축물들을 보는 즐거움이 컸다. 건축가의 자료 찾아보고 공공건축물과 주택, 성당 등 가깝게 다가갈 수록 흥미는 더했고 어느 날은 유리창에 시선이 고정되었다. 그 때부터는 건축물을 찾아 다니는 것이 아닌 가만히 들여다보는 것, 긴 시간 유리창을 바라보는 것을 즐겼다. 오랫동안 공부한 갈증이 햇살에 먹구름 개이듯 사라졌고 본격적으로 유리 작업을 시작했다.

Third expression, 유리는 건물의 유리창을 만드는 소다유리(Soda-Lime Glass)나 예술품을 만드는 크리스탈 유리(Lead Alkali Glass) 등 종류도 다양하다. 유리는 '빛의 모자이크'라고 불리 운다. 빛을 투과하고 반사하는 물성적 특성으로 고대에서부터 귀한 물건으로 여겨왔다. 작가는 세인트폴 대성당(Saint Paul's Cathedral), 웨스트민스터 사원 (Westminster Abbey) 등 교회건물 내부에서 빛으로 빛나는 스태인드 글라스와 밖에서 본 유리의 다른 모습을 본 후 양면성에 대한 흥미를 가지고 작품연구에 더욱 매진하였다. ● 작품의 외형은 건축물의 형태를 띠며, 구조적으로 유리창의 변주로 이어진다. 작업과정은 먼저 원하는 크기의 석고 틀을 만든 후 색유리를 여러 개 배치하는 순간, 그 동안 수없이 봤던 건축물, 스태인드 글라스, 그리고 그 안에서 느꼈던 작가의 감정이 되살아나며 배열이 이루어진다. 가마에 소성될 때는 유리 색에 따라 강도가 다르기 때문에 소성의 변화까지 예측하며 면밀하게 계산하는 시간을 가져본다. 견고한 유리는 비결정 고형물질의 변주를 일으키며 색과 색의 결합이 부드러운 곡선이 되고, 색과 색이 스며들어 잔잔한 물결처럼, 지층의 유연한 곡선처럼 투명성의 유희가 펼쳐진다. 예측 이상의 결과 때문에 작가는 유리작업을 더욱더 사랑하고 즐긴다. ● "자기 삶에서 '빛'을 구하고자 한다면 먼저 눈앞에 있는 힘겨운 현실이라는 '그늘'을 제대로 직시하고 그것을 뛰어넘기 위해 용기 있게 전진할 일이다."라고 건축가 안도 다다오는 말했다. 정수경 작가에게 긴 해외 유학생활이 예술가로서의 토양을 단련하는 그늘의 시간이었다면, 이번 귀국 발표전은 단련된 빛으로 '빛'을 깊게 들여다보게 하는 부드러운 에너지를 감상자에게 선물하고 있다.

Chung Sukyung's Invited Exhibition on Returning Home – Looking into ● A transparent travel to the world of amorphous solids- First expression: When she saw stainedglass for the first time in Moscow, artist Sukyung Chung changed the major in her mind from stage design to glass work. For five years from that time on, she majored in glass and laid the foundation solidly although she could not refine techniques due to poor tools and materials. In order to supplement her glass study, she went over to U.K., and studying at the Royal College of Art, she set out on her journey as a glass artist. ● The artist was selected as the award of the president of Korean Fine Arts Association in the section of craft art of the 24th Korea National Arts Exhibition in 2005. At that time the artist was majoring in product design, and she observed traditional objects at the Korean Folk Village, and selected some of them and shaped them with glass. For eggs in straw wrappers, millstones, fulling stones, fans, etc., she expressed them as a mixture of design and art while maintaining their unique frame. Remarkable was her attempt to alter traditional objects minimally using the transparent and colorless features of glass. As suggested by this, the artist is equipped with highly sensuous aesthetic sense drawing out the characteristics of things and with the technique to transform them into the special material "glass." Based on such experiences in experimental works, she embodied concepts based on techniques that she had acquired at the RCA and began to exhibit her works. ● Second expression: The artist studied abroad mainly in Moscow and London. It was a great joy to walk along the streets and see buildings. As she searched architects' materials and examined public buildings, houses, cathedrals, etc. closely, her interest grew higher and one day her eyes were arrested by glass windows. Since then, she enjoyed not looking around buildings but looking inside them in silence and staring at glass windows for a long time. Her long thirst for studying disappeared like dark clouds give way to sunlight, and she began to commit herself to glass work. ● Third expression: There are various types of glass including soda-lime glass used in building windows and crystal glass (lead alkali glass) used in art works. Glass is called ‘mosaic of light.' Because of its physical properties transmitting and reflecting light, glass has been regarded as precious material since ancient times. Taking interest in the different looks of the shining inside and outside of stained glass at church buildings such as Saint Paul's Cathedral and the Westminster Abbey, the artist was deeply absorbed in research on the art. ● The artist's works take the form of a building outwardly, and structurally they are variants of glass window. In the creation process, she makes a gypsum frame of desired size, and places a number of pieces of color glass. Then, the pieces are arranged with arousing the artist's memory of countless buildings and stained glasses that she has watched and what she has felt with them. Because when they are fired in a kiln glass color is changed according to strength, the artist calculates minutely with estimating change in plasticity. Strong glass causes a variation of amorphous solid, and the boundary between color and color becomes a smooth curve. Color permeates like gentle waves and shows a play of transparency like the supple curves of strata. The artist loves and enjoys glass works all the more because of outcomes beyond expectation. ● Architect Tadao Ando said, "If you seek ‘light' in your life, you need to look straight at ‘the shadow' of the hard reality in front of you and to move forward bravely in order to overcome it. For artist Sukyung Chung, if her long days of studying abroad were a time of shadow for laying the ground as an artist, her exhibition at this time on her retuning home presents soft energy that allows the viewers to look deep into ‘light' through the tempered light. ■ Jeong, Young Sook
