서울은 조선 시대(15C) 이래로 한국의 수도이자 정치, 경제, 문화의 중심도시로 성장해 왔으며, 1960년대 이후 급속하게 도시화가 진행되었다. 도시가 빠르게 개발되면서 여러 방면에서 소멸과 생성이 반복되었는데, 건축물, 자연 환경처럼 겉으로 드러나는 공간의 풍경은 물론, 서울을 살아가는 사람들의 삶이나 문화도 다양한 변화를 겪게 되었다. 그래서 서울이라는 공간에는 다양한 삶의 모습과 이야기들이 오랜 시간 속에 켜켜히 쌓여있고, 지금도 새로운 역사들이 쓰여지고 있다. 이 전시에서는 한국 예술가들의 시선으로 서울의 다양한 모습과 서울에서 살아가고 있는 사람들의 삶의 면면을 조명해 보고자 한다. 일러스트, 회화, 사진, 비디오, 설치 작업 등의 다양한 매체를 통해 만들어진 이들의 작품을 통해 서울의 과거 뿐만 아니라 동시대 서울의 모습과 그곳을 살아가는 사람들의 이야기를 읽어내려갈 수 있을 것이다. 1990년대 이래로 한국의 젊은 예술가들은 자신들의 삶의 터전인 서울이라는 도시를 주목하고 작품화하기 시작했다. 작가들 나름대로 서울에 대한 주관적인 기억과 역사를 만들어온 셈이다. 이 전시에서는 서울에 대해 특별한 시선을 가지고 지속적으로 작업해 온 여덟 명의 예술가, 김봄, 김승택, 안세권, 안재선, 이장희, 장석준, 정희우, 한성필을 초대하였다.

김봄, 안재선, 이장희는 주로 서울의 명소나 역사적인 장소를 소재로 작업해왔다. 김봄은 시시각각 변해가는 도시 풍경 속에서 역사적으로 남겨질 이야기들을 기록하는데, 그림의 상당수는 시청, 덕수궁, 광화문 광장, 남산, 한강, 서울 성곽 등 서울의 대표적인 모티브들이 차지하고 있다. 이런 특정한 장소를 그리되, 그 장소와 관련된 사건을 함께 담아 도시가 유기적으로 살아 숨쉬게 하고, 보는 사람들에게 하나하나 뜯어보는 즐거움을 준다. 일러스트레이터 안재선은 파리나 영국을 주제로 한 일러스트북은 있는데 서울에 관한 일러스트북이 없다는 것에 도전 의식을 느끼고 서울을 집중적으로 그리고 있다. 이장희는 주로 역사적으로 의의가 있는 장소를 중심으로 현장을 답사하여 스케치로 남기는데, 이미지에 그 지역의 사료나 자료를 조사하여 정리한 이야기를 함께 담는다.

이에 반해 장석준이나 안세권은 사람들이 주목하지 않는 곳, 재개발되어 역사의 뒤안길로 사라져 가는 곳과 같은 서울의 이면에 주로 관심을 가지고 있다. 장석준은 주로 도시화의 뒤안길에 있는 변두리 지역을 작업대상으로 삼는데, 예를 들면 후미진 뒷골목, 밤이 되면 나타나는 포장마차들, 오래된 상가의 셔터들, 모텔 주차장마다 치렁치렁 걸려있는 비닐 가림막들 등을 수집하여 컴퓨터 상에서 같은 종류끼리 반복적으로 배열하는 편집 작업을 거쳐 독특한 풍경을 만들어낸다. 사진과 비디오 작업으로 대도시의 변화상을 지속적으로 발표해 오고 있는 안세권은 쉴 세 없이 소멸과 생성을 반복하는 서울의 개발과 재개발의 문제를 전면에 들고 나왔다. 그는 카메라의 눈을 빌려 재개발로 인해 사라져가는 도시의 이면을 사람들 앞에 드러낸다. 지금은 복개되어 시민들의 사랑하는 산책로가 된 청계천이 개발되는 과정을 사진에 담기도 하고, 월곡동과 같이 대규모 아파트 단지로 개발되면서 기존의 삶의 터전이 파괴되어 가는 현장을 생생하게 보여주기도 했다. 최근들어, 재개발 현장과 복원 현장을 통해 현재의 시간에서 과거의 흔적과 기억을 찾는 담는 프로젝트를 선보인 한성필이 서울에 접근하는 방식은 또 다르다. 사실 그는 역사적인 건물을 가림막으로 감싸고 기록하는 파사드 프로젝트로 국내외의 주목을 받아왔다. 초기에는 복원 건축물의 가림막이나 대형 벽화 등에서 찾아 볼 수 있는 트롱플뢰유 (Trompe-l'œil)를 사진적 재현을 통해 '존재함을 증명'함과 동시에 실재와 이상 사이에서의 관계 흐름을 찾아왔다면, 최근에는 복원중인 문화재에 본인이 직접 가림막을 제작하여 설치한 후 사진으로 가림막과 공사장의 모습, 그리고 가림막 뒤의 실제 건물을 함께 담는다. 설치작업과 사진작업을 함께 진행하여 기존에 존재하고 있는 역사 위에 작가가 만들어낸 환영을 더하는 것이다.

한편, 정희우나 김승택은 서울의 거리에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 각종 기호들과 서울 사람들의 일상에서 흔히 사용되는 물건들을 있는 그대로 보여준다. 정희우는 단순히 도시의 풍경을 그리는 것을 넘어, 집요하다 싶을 정도로 도시를 기록하는 것에 힘을 쏟아왔다. 도시의 외관뿐 아니라 도시를 조용히 움직이고 있는 각종 기호들에 지속적인 관심을 기울인 그는 도시의 바닥에서 도시의 흐름을 만들고 있는 각종 기호들, 예를 들면, 일방통행 표시, 진입금지 표시, 자전거 도로 표시, 맨홀 뚜껑 등을 탁본으로 그대로 떠내기 시작했다. 최근에는 한국 도시 개발의 대표적 산물이라 할 수 있는 아파트의 담벼락을 탁본하여, 아파트의 벽들에 새겨진 시간의 흔적들을 담아내기도 했다. 김승택은 주로 자신이 일정기간 거주했거나, 익숙한 동네의 풍경을 작품에 주로 담아왔는데, 그 풍경이란 도시의 발전상을 보여주는 고층빌딩이 즐비한 모습이 아니라, 오랜 시간을 두고 사람들의 삶의 흔적이 차곡차곡 쌓여온 소박한 동네의 풍경이다. 그와 동시에 그곳의 사람들이 보편적으로 쓰고 있는 물건들을 통해 삶의 모습을 보여준다. 그는 지극히 일상적인 것들을 통해 그 동안 우리가 간과했을지도 모르는 삶의 이야기를 선물하고 있는 것이다. ● 이 여덟 명의 작가가 다양하게 보여주는 서울의 모습 속에는 작가의 개인적인 생각과 기억을 넘어 서울을 살아가는 사람들의 이야기와 기억들이 자연스레 묻어나 있다. 낮과 밤이 보여주는 모습은 분명히 다르지만 본질은 변하지 않듯이, 이들이 보여주는 서울의 단편들 하나하나가 모두 서울의 본 모습이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 한국의 젊은 예술가들의 작품을 통해 서울이라는 매력적인 도시를 깊이 만나는 좋은 기회가 되길 기대한다.

김봄은 시간과 사건들이 겹겹이 쌓인 흔적들이 현대 도시 속에서 보존될 때 그 가치가 소중하게 기억된다고 생각하고, 시시각각 변해가는 도시 풍경 중에서 역사적으로 남겨질 이야기들을 기록한다. 김봄의 작품에 가장 자주 등장하는 도시는 작가가 오랫동안 살아오면서 자연스럽게 관심이 생긴 서울인데, 대체로 시청, 덕수궁, 광화문 광장, 남산, 한강, 서울성곽 같은 서울의 대표적인 모티브들을 작품화한다. 그는 이러한 특정한 장소들을 고지도 형식을 빌려 그리는데, 장소와 함께 그 장소와 관련된 사건도 담는다. 특이한 것은 그 장소가 가진 과거의 흔적은 물론 현재의 모습까지도 한 화면에 동시에 그려낸다는 것이다. ● 이장희는 작은 노트를 들고 서울의 구석구석을 발로 밟으며 만나는 풍경들을 섬세한 펜으로 그려낸다. 그는 단지 풍경만 그리는 것이 아니라 그 장소를 리서치하여 글을 함께 쓰기때문에 그의 스케치에는 글과 그림이 공존한다. 그렇게 차곡차곡 쌓아나간 서울 스케치는 2011년『서울의 시간을 그리다』라는 책으로 출간되었다. 지금도 동아일보, 불교신문 등의 여러 매체에서 서울뿐 아니라 한국 곳곳의 이야기를 연재하고 있으며, 사라져 가는 풍경들을 그림으로 남기기 위한 작업을 지속적으로 진행하고 있다. ● 안재선은 일러스트로 서울의 이미지를 그려낸다. 오랫동안 살아오면서 그저 익숙하기만 했던 서울이 어느 날 매력적인 도시로 다가오면서, 파리나 런던을 그린 일러스트북은 있는데, 정작 서울을 다룬 일러스트북이 없다는 사실에 도전을 느꼈다. 그래서 서울의 사라져가는 동네, 서울만의 특색이 뭍어나는 곳을 현대적인 감각의 일러스트로 표현하고 있다. 2014년에는 그동안 틈틈히 그린 서울의 모습을 모아 만든 소책자『안녕 서울』의 일러스트로 볼로냐 어린이 도서전에서 올해의 일러스트레이터로 뽑히기도 했다.

장석준은 도시의 이곳저곳을 다니며 도시 산업화가 만들어낸 도시의 익숙한 이미지들 수집하여 그것을 작품의 소재로 삼는다. 서울뿐 아니라 몇 차례의 해외 아티스트 레지던시를 통해 뉴질랜드, 북경 등의 도시 이미지도 수집해 작품화 했고, 최근에는 타이베이의 풍경을 모아 작품을 만들기도 했다. 그는 하나의 풍경이 되는 대상의 특정 부분만을 잘라 꼴라주하거나 재배열하여 새로운 풍경을 만든다. 작가의 개인적인 관심에서 시작되어 수집되고 만들어진 풍경은 동시대의 사회, 도시 속의 모습 또는 병리들을 자연스럽게 드러내는 매개가 되고 있다. ● 안세권은 쉴 세 없이 소멸과 생성을 반복하는 서울이라는 공간이 품고 있는 시간의 기억들을 수년에 걸쳐 사진으로 기록하고 있다. 그의 작품에서는 도시의 성장과 발전을 보여 주는 현재의 풍경과 끝없는 사회 개발의 논리에 밀려 사라질 상황에 처해있는 풍경이 묘하게 공존하고 있다. 작가는 이런 풍경을 카메라의 눈을 빌려 조용히 바라보면서, 일방적이고 획일적인 재개발 문화에 대한 반성적인 지적을 하고 있다. ● 김승택은 개인적인 경험을 통해 기억 속에서 재구성된 도시의 이미지를 시각화하는 데 관심이 있다. 작가가 30여년을 살아온 도시인 서울을 주로 작업의 대상으로 삼고 있다. 특별히, 발전하는 도시상을 보여주는 빌딩숲보다, 삶의 흔적이 켜켜히 쌓여있는 오래되고 낡은 도시의 모습들을 사진과 컴퓨터 드로잉 작업을 통해 작품으로 만든다. 컴퓨터를 가지고 작업하지만 펜마우스가 아닌 일반 마우스를 사용하기때문에 상당한 시간이 소요되는 고된 수작업을 통해 아날로그적인 손맛을 그대로 보여준다.

정희우는 자신의 생활 현장인 서울에 무한한 관심을 가지고 있다. 특히 한국 도시 발전사에서 독특한 의미를 지니고 있는 강남에 관심을 가지고 있으며, 강남대로를 4년에 걸쳐 자신의 몸으로 측정하여 수십 폭의 그림으로 그려내기도 했다. 최근 들어, 전통적인 재현 방법인 탁본을 이용하여 도시를 움직이는 기호인 각종 도로 표시나 맨홀 뚜껑, 또는 오래된 아파트의 담을 고스란히 떠내고 있다. 시간이 지나고 도시 개발이 진행되면 사라질 이러한 풍경들은 담은 그의 작품은 서울이라는 도시 역사의 작은 증거물이며, 탁본을 통한 기록은 작가가 도시를 기억하는 한 방법이라 할 수 있다. ● 한성필은 사진이라는 가장 현실적이면서도 가상적인 매체를 통해 동시대의 감성을 자극하는 파사드 프로젝트(Façade Project)를 선보여 왔다. 초기에는 복원 건축물의 가림막이나 대형 벽화 등에서 찾아 볼 수 있는 트롱플뢰유 (Trompe-l'œil)를 통해 '존재함을 증명'함과 동시에 실재와 이상 사이에서의 관계 흐름을 찾아왔다. 최근에는 복원중인 문화재에 직접 가림막을 제작하여 설치한 후 사진으로 가림막과 공사장의 모습, 그리고 가림막 뒤의 실제 건물을 함께 담는다. 설치와 사진작업을 함께 진행하여, 사진의 사실적 기록성을 유지하면서도 사실과 허구의 경계가 교묘하게 뒤섞인 세계를 보여주는 것이다. 한편, '공간의 기록, 기억의 재현' 프로젝트를 통해, 현재 시간에서 과거의 흔적과 기억을 찾고 있다. 그는 시공간적인 기록과 기억의 재현 사이에서 파생되는 존재와 형태상의 변모라는 양면성과 관계성에 대해 주목하고, 일련의 프로젝트들을 통해 현실 속에서 이상을 경험하고자 하는 현대인들의 욕망과 그에 대한 반영을 제시한다. ■ 장유정

Seoul has been developing as a center of politics, economy and culture since Chosun Dynasty (15C) and dramatically civilized since 1960s. The cycle of creation and extinction has been repeated in many areas as the city rapidly evolves so the life and culture of the people living in Seoul have changed as well. So various lives and stories have accumulated in Seoul over the long period of time and new history is being written at this moment, too. This exhibition will present various aspects of Seoul and the life of its people from Korean artists' point of view. The story of Seoul and its people can be heard thru various art works such as illustration, painting, picture, video and installation products. ● Young Korean artists have focused on Seoul, the city of their living site, and made art works of Seoul since 1990s. In other words, artists have been writing histories of Seoul based on their own memories. 8 artists, Kim Bom, Ahn Jae Sun, Lee Jang Hee, Jang Suk Joon, Ahn Se Kweon, Han Sungpil, Jeong Hee Woo and Kim Seung Taek, who have been making art works of Seoul from special point of view were invited to this exhibition. ● Kim Bom, Ahn Jae Sun and Lee Jang Hee have been focusing on historical or well known spots of Seoul. Kim Bom record the story which will go down in the history in this changing environment of city and most of the paintings are motivated from Seoul's representing spots such as City Hall, Deoksugung Palace, Gwanghwamun Plaza, Namsan Mountain, Hangang River and Seoul Fortress Wall. She conveys joy to the people by presenting related events the place and giving life to the city. Illustrator Ahn Jae Sun wanted to challenge herself as we didn't have illustration book of Seoul while the one for Paris and England is already published, so now she is actively drawing paintings of Seoul. Lee, Jang Hee usually draws sketches of historically important places upon site visiting and he adds historical research to the drawings. ● While, Jang Suk Joon and Ahn Se Kweon are usually attracted by disappearing places such as the place people never care or the place soon to be disappeared because of redevelopment. Jang Suk Joon chooses the suburbs area as a subject of her work. For instance, she makes unique image by arranging similar pictures repeatedly on the computer and she usually takes picture of back ally, food stalls that appear in the night, shutters of old shopping center or vinyl shades hanging at the parking lot entrance of motels. Ahn Se Kweon who constantly brings the change of major cities to his exhibition thru pictures and video images and this time he raised the issues of development and redevelopment of Seoul in front. He describes the other side of the city that is disappearing from redevelopment thru his camera. He captured Chunggyechun Stream, which is now a popular place for strolling, during its transition period as well as the construction site of Wolkok-dong that destroyed existing living site to be reformed into large apartment complex. This method is different from Han Sungpil's current approach to Seoul which is to accommodate remnants and memories of the past from the present's point of view. In fact, he has been famous for his Façade project which is to cover the historical buildings with wrapping and record it. In the beginning, he searched for the relations between idea and reality and 'proved existence' by photographically reproducing Trompe-l'œil which can be found from the warp or wall paintings of restored buildings. These days, he installed custom-made wrapping to cultural assets and picture the construction site together with the wrapping as well as the building behind the wrapping. He added the spirit created by artist to existing history by doing installation and picturing at the same time. ● Jeong Hee Woo and Kim Seung Taek show the subjects and signs that are used in the daily life of Seoul people as they are. Jeong Hee Woo has been concentrating on recording the city where is more than drawing the sceneries of the city. With her constant interests in the exteriors of the building as well as the signs such as one-way sign, dead-end sign, bicycle ways or manhole cover that move the city silently. Recently, she used to take rubbings of the walls of apartment which are the representing products of Korean urban development to show the trace of time. Kim Seung Taek describes the sceneries where he used to live or he's familiar with and the sceneries are usually from simple villages having history instead of high skyscrapers showing development phase. He presents the subjects used by the people in their daily life at the same time. He is just telling the story of life which we have been ignored so far. ● Seoul where is described by these 8 artists has the stories and memories of the people living in Seoul. The images shown by day and night are significantly different but their essences stay the same. So each image shown by them is an essence of Seoul. I hope this exhibition can be a good opportunity to meet attractive city, Seoul thru the works done by Korean young artists. ● Kim Bom records the story which will be go down the history in this changing city, because she believes that value of the remnants accumulated over the times and events will be cherished only when the remnants are preserved in this modern city. Most frequently used subject by Kim Bom is Seoul in which she spent the most of the time and she is usually motivated by Seoul's representing spots such as City Hall, Deoksugung Palace, Gwanghwamun Plaza, Namsan Mountain, Hangang River and Seoul Fortress Wall. Sometimes, she presents these spots by showing them to use form of the old map and she includes the stories related to the spots. A unique thing about her works is she describes past and present of the place at the same time. ● Lee Jang Hee draws the sceneries of Seoul he encounters during his walking journey using his delicate pen. He doesn't only draw pictures but also leaves notes by researching the place so writings and drawings are coexisting in his sketches. His sketches collected over the times were published as a book titled『Drawing the time of Seoul』in 2011. He is still publishing series of stories of Seoul and other places in Dongah Daily newspaper, Korea Bulgyo news and more. Also he is continuously doing this works to show the sceneries that are disappearing thru drawings. ● Ahn Jae Sun presents the images of Seoul thru illustration. She challenged herself to make one for Seoul when she realized that we didn't have illustration book of Seoul in where she has lived for a long time while one for Paris and England is already published. So she is describing Seoul's unique places or villages disappearing using modern illustration. She was assigned as 'Illustrator of the year' by publishing the booklet with Seoul's images that she has been drawing. ● Jang Suk Joon takes subject by collecting familiar images of the city created by industrialization while traveling. He made arts from the images of New Zealand and Beijing as well as Seoul thru Artist Residency and made works with the images of Taipei recently. She usually creates new sceneries thru rearrangement and collage made by specific parts of the subject. The sceneries that were initiated and collected out of his subjective interests have become mediums to show the images of the society, city and how they work. ● Ahan Se Kweon constantly records the memories of Seoul in which the cycle of creation and distinction is repeated. In his works, the sceneries of development and improvement of city and the sceneries that will soon to be disappeared by them are coexisting. The artist takes reflective thinking towards one-sided and standardized redevelopment culture. ● Kim Seung Taek is interested in visualizing the images of city that are rearranged in the memories thru his personal experiences. He usually uses Seoul as a subject of his work as he has been living in this city for more than 30 years. Especially, he captures the images from old and worn out city where is an accumulation of the traces of living rather than capturing images of high skyscrapers and he makes works using photography and computer drawing. Because of the fact that he uses regular mouse instead of pen mouse, it consumes considerable times to present analog hand works. ● Jeong Heewoo has infinite passion in Seoul where she is living. Especially, he focuses on Gangnam area where has a unique meaning in the history of city development so one time she drew tens of pictures by measuring Gangnam-daero with his own body over the last 4 years. Recently, she shows the images of the symbols that move city such as road signs, manhole cover or wall of old apartment by using traditional reproduction method, rubbing. His works are small evidences of city history as they contain the images that will eventually be disappeared as city redevelopment starts after sometimes and his works are also his own method to remember this city. ● Han Sungpil has been delivering Façade project which stimulates the senses of the times by using photography which is a realistic, yet virtual media. In the beginning, he searched for the relation between reality and ideal by proving 'existence' thru (Trompe-l'œil) which can be found from the shades or wall painting of restored buildings. Recently, he takes pictures of the wrapping, construction site and the building behind the wrapping after installing his custom made wrapping, He shows the world strangely mixed with reality and ideal while maintaining realistic recording of photography by doing installation and photography at the same time. Also he seeks for the traces and memories of the past in the present thru the project called 'Record of space, reproduction of memory'. He concentrates on double-sidedness and relationship which are deprived subjects and transformation in shape and suggests reflecting modern people's desire to experience ideal in the reality. ■ Jang You Jung
