배 부르고 등 따시면... ● 우리네 인간 생활의 가장 기본적인 것, 그래서 더욱이 예술의 소재가 될 수 없을 것 같지만, 입고, 먹고, 몸 담아 살아가는 공간을 빼놓고 인간의 삶을 말할 수는 없다. Art Space J는 우리 삶의 필수불가결한 요소인 '의식주'를 가지고 작업을 해오고 있는 작가들의 전시를 3회의 시리즈로 묶어 기획하고자 한다. 삶의 근간이 되는 의식주가 사진이라는 매체를 통해 어떻게 구현되는지 살펴보는 것은 우리에게 상상력을 자극하는 재미를 주는 동시에 일상의 소중함을 다시 한번 생각해 보는 기회를 마련해 줄 것이다. 그 첫 번째 전시로『Clothing_Telling』은 옷이라는 주제를 사진이라는 매체를 가지고 탐구해 나가고 있는 4인의 작가, 구성수, 오상택, 성연주, 양호상의 작품을 통해 예술의 소재로서 옷을 바라보는 작가들의 미학적 시각을 한자리에 모아 살펴보고자 한다.

젊은이들의 아이콘인 청바지를 자신만의 포토제닉 드로잉을 통해 담아내어 현대사진의 새로운 가능성을 보여주는 구성수. 특이한 제스처를 연상시키는 옷들을 연출하여 옷장 속에 걸린 오브제들의 '사는 이야기'를 들려주고자 하는 오상택. 음식재료로 만든 옷의 이미지 유희를 통해 실제와 가상의 경계를 탐구해 나가는 성연주. 그리고 옷의 패턴을 통해 특정 시간대의 역사와 기억을 은연중에 드러냄으로써 우리 사회의 시각적 이미지에 대한 고찰을 시도하는 양호상. 2014년 가을의 문을 여는 Art Space J의 이번『Clothing_Telling』展은 노련한 장인의 예술 감각에 따라 씨줄과 날줄이 만나 서로 다른 독특한 옷감이 탄생하듯, 사진이라는 옷을 입고 우리 앞에 마주한 작품들을 통해 옷이라는 일상의 소재가 예술로 재탄생하여 빚어내는 다양한 변주곡을 들어볼 수 있는 특별한 시간이 될 것이다. ■ 아트스페이스 J

Clothing, food, and shelter – the most basic necessities of human life – may seem too mundane to serve as main subjects of art. At the same time, we cannot begin to depict our lives without these three fundamental elements. ● Art Space J presents a series of three exhibits with various artists who have been dealing with these necessities of human life as the pivotal subject of his or her work. By investigating how the most basic elements of human life are diversely visualized through photography, we hope to provide the audience with a chance to reflect on the preciousness of daily life while stimulating the imagination with novel expressions and usage of photographic art. ● As the first installment of the overarching theme 『Considering the Basic Necessities of Life through Art』, "Clothing_Telling" will examine four photographers' aesthetic points of view regarding clothing as the primary subject of their art. ● These four artists, Sungsoo Koo, Sangtaek Oh, Yeonju Sung, and Hosang Yang, have been exploring the meaning of clothing through the artistic tool of photography. Sungsoo Koo reveals new possibilities of contemporary photography by taking blue jeans – an iconic symbol of youth – and creating detailed images through his unique technique, "photogenic drawing." Sangtaek Oh seeks to tell the story behind objects hanging in a closet based on his personal memory. Yeonju Sung explores the artistic boundary between the real and imaginary through play on images composed of colorful food ingredients. Finally, Hosang Yang implicitly exposes the history and memory of a given time period through diverse patterns of clothing, thereby attempting novel contemplation of visual images in our society. ● The "Clothing_Telling" exhibit, opening this fall, 2014, will provide a unique opportunity to witness the reincarnation of clothing – ordinary and basic objects in life – into art that delights with whimsical variations. ■ Art Space J
