레가토로 들어가며: 복합적 감성과 상황과의 대면 ● 라유슬의 이번 전시의 주제인 『레가토(Legato)』는 음악에서 음과 음 사이를 이어서 연주하라는 의미를 지닌다. 높낮이가 비슷한 음들은 부드럽게 연결되기도 하지만 그렇지 않은 경우에는 순간적으로 동시에 연주되는 듯한 착각을 느끼게 하기도 한다. 하지만 작가가 말하는 『레카토』는 그리 단순하지 않고 쉽게 단정지을 수도 없다. 사람과 사람 사이의 인연, 삶에서 오는 우연적 상황과 필연적 만남, 그리고 종교적 체험에서의 초월적 현상 모두를 포괄하고 있다. 예를 들면, 늘 마주하던 사람 과 장소 그리고 상황이 전혀 다르게 보이는 낯선 경험 같은 것 말이다. 이러한 우연과 필연에서 오는 경험은 때로는 미궁 속에 빠지는 듯한 혼란을 주기도 하지만, 상서로운 쾌감을 주기도 한다. 작가가 바라보는 『레카토』는 이러한 낯선 경험이 어떠한 이끌림이 되어 다른 공간으로 인도하는 에너지로 작용하는 모습니다. 이는 바로, 복합적인 감성과 상황의 마주함이다.

흐름에 대하여: 차원으로의 연결 ● 작가는 어려서부터 자연스럽게 음악을 접했다. 물론 음악을 전공하신 부모님의 영향도 있겠지만, 작가 역시 이를 듣고, 배우고, 연주하면서 생활 속에서 자연스럽게 음악을 받아들였다. 음악은 '애증 같은 구속'이었다고 작가는 고백하지만, 이는 작가가 즐기고, 익히고, 활용하는 예술적 상징이자 기호이다. 작가의 작업에는 어떤 '흐름'이 보인다. 한번에 그린 듯이 유려하게 진행된 선에서는 부드러움과 강렬함이 동시에 존재한다. 이러한 상반된 흐름은 다양한 색채의 층위와의 연결을 통해 때로는 맑고, 촉촉하며, 섬세한 떨림으로 보여지기도 하지만 응축된 감정의 격정적인 에너지의 압도함도 지니고 있다. 이러한 작업 방식은 미리 계획되어 진행되기 보다는 작가의 즉각적인 반응, 혹은 투쟁적인 내면의 대화와도 같다. 작가는 이런 현상을 논리적으로 확실하게 설명할 수는 없지만 몰입되는 상황에서의 강렬한 체험이라고 한다. 이러한 체험들은 몸에서 벗어나와 다른 차원으로 연결되고, 마치 음악에서 음률이 연결되어 하나의 곡이 완성되는 것처럼, 작가의 복합적 내면과 또 다른 차원의 경험으로 인도된다. 작가는 작업이 하나의 음악으로 연결되어 보이길 원한다. 그러기에 라유슬의 작업은 삶의 여러 이야기들을 단편적으로 혹은 모두를 함축적으로 담고 있지만, 보이는 것과 들리는 것 너머의 '차원'을 연결하고 이를 넘나드는 '흐름'으로 보인다. 시간과 공간의 다각적 연결과 열린 상태로 도달하기 위해 작가는 자아성찰적이고도 반복된 과정을 통해 그녀만의 새로운 흐름과 차원을 만들어 가고 있다.

정제된 고백: 유연함으로 ● 라유슬의 음악이 된 작업은 이제 어떤 울림과도 같은 일종의 고백이면서 삶의 보고가 된다. 한동안 작업과 거리를 두었던 작가는 결혼을 통해 환경과 삶의 변화도 맞았지만, 과잉 없는 삶, 그리고 공허를 견뎌내기 위한 어떤 이끌림으로 다시 작업과 대면하게 되었다. 이러한 작업은 그녀에게 정체성을 형성하는데 근본이 될 수도 있고, 기억과 경험, 그리고 상흔이 얽힌 함축적인 장소일 수도 있다. 감정과 욕망을 이제 통제하고 다스리면서 작업하는 작가는 솔직하지만 상징적이고, 고통스럽지만 삶의 역동을 보여준다. 정제된 고백은 그녀를 보호하지만 동시에 드러내기에 작가는 적극적이면서도 타협할 수 있는 유연한 자세를 갖게 되는 것이다. 삶에서 유연함과 관대함, 그리고 열린 태도는 혼란과 분열이 만연하는 그녀 주변에서 결코 쉽게 이루어 질 수 있는 것이 아니다. 유연함은 이전의 삶을 부정하고 거부하는 것이 아니라, 수용하고 변화하는 한 단계 발전된 행동양식을 보여주는 것이다. 따라서 『레가토』에서 보여준 라유슬의 새로운 모습은 그녀만의 고백이자 인생의 참회이며, 또 다른 자아를 찾기 위한 고된 노력의 과정인 것이다. 따라서 라유슬의 이번 전시 『레가토』를 통해 작가의 변화된 삶과 새로운 작품의 진정한 의미를 찾길 바란다. ■ 주하영

Entering Legato: Confrontation of complex sensitivity and situation ● 『Legato』, the topic of Rha, Yoo Seul's exhibition, is a musical technique where connecting notes are played or sung together. In Legato, the sound can transition smoothly between similar tones, if the notes are further apart, it makes one feel confusion as the notes are played simultaneously. However, 『Legato』 that the artist refers to is not that simple and cannot be defined so easily. It includes every transcendental phenomenon from relationships between people, in both accidental and purposeful situations, and religious experience. For example, a familiar experience of people, place, or situation that one encounters all the time appearing completely different. The experience that one is likely to have from such accident or inevitability creates confusion as if one fell into a labyrinth, but can also give auspicious pleasure. To the artist, 『Legato』 is an image of such unfamiliar experience becoming a certain attraction, and working as the energy that leads to a different space. This is the encounter of complex sensitivity and situation. About the flow: a connection into dimension ● Rha, Yoo Seul learned to appreciate music from childhood. Of course, the artist's parents, who majored in music, may have influenced her, but she also listened, learned, performed, and accepted music to her life of her own accord. Rha, Yoo Seul made a confession that music was 'shackles like love and hatred,' but from her work it appears as an artistic symbol and sign that the artist enjoyed, learned, and used. There is a certain 'flow' in the artist's work. Softness and intensity exist simultaneously in an elegant line that looks as though it was painted in a single stroke. The conflicting flow sometimes appears as clear, moist, and delicate vibration through its connection with a layer of various colours, but also contains the overwhelming passionate energy of condensed emotion. Such style is not planned, but rather, it is an instantaneous response or inner conflict within her. The artist said she cannot clearly explain the phenomenon logically, but stated that it is an intense experience in a situation when she falls into a state of immersion. These experiences come out of the body, and like the tone and rhythm in music get connected with each other and complete music, they are led to the complex inner self of the artist and to an experience of much different dimension. Rha, Yoo Seul wants her work to appear as though it is connected to music. So, her work contains various stories of life, fragmentarily or implicitly, but it all resembles the 'flow' that connects the 'dimension' beyond something seen or heard. To reach multilateral connection and open state of time and space, the artist is creating her new flow and dimension through self-introspective and repeated process. Refined confession: with flexibility ● This work that became the 'music' of Rha, Yoo Seul is a kind of confession, like some echo and repository of life. The artist stopped producing work for a while, during which time she experienced changed environment and life through marriage, but came back to her work by some attraction to contest previous doubts. To her, the work can be the basis of finding identity and confessing, and can be an implicative place of entangled memory, experience, and trauma. The artist at work, who is now controlling her emotion and desire, is honest, symbolic, and painful, but is also showing the dynamics of life. A refined confession protects her but reveals her at the same time and the artist gets to have active and flexible attitude that allows her to compromise. Flexibility, generosity, and open-mindedness in life are something that cannot be realized around her where chaos and disunity are pervasive. Flexibility is not about denying and refusing previous life, but is about accepting and showing the behaviour patterns that gave her a new image. Therefore, the new image of Rha, Yoo Seul in 『Legato』 is her own confession and repentance of life, and is a process of hard effort of finding an alter ego. Through her exhibition, we hope to find the meaning and see the changed life of Rha, Yoo Seul. ■ HaYoung Joo
