두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2014년 9월 4일 부터 10월 2일까지 한국 현대미술의 신세대 작가로 주목받고 있는 전소정의 개인전『밤이 다 되었으니 이 밤을 잊으십시오』를 진행한다. 이번 전시에는 구작 세 점과 신작 두 점의 비디오 작품이 전시될 예정이다. 극장 간판장이의 삶을 다룬「되찾은 시간(2012)」과 한 자리에서 40여년 동안 미싱사로 살아온 이의 일상을 그린「 어느 미싱사의 일일(2012)」그리고 외줄타기 곡예사를 통하여 예술과 예술가의 본질을 이야기하는「마지막 기쁨(2012)」이 전시된다.

신작「열두 개의 방(2014)」과「보물섬(2014)」은 각각 피아노 조율사와 제주 해녀의 이야기를 통해 예술가를 둘러싼 세계와 그들이 추구하는 이상향을 은유적으로 보여준다. 이 두 편의 영상작품은 전시 안에서 쌍을 이루어 동양과 서양, 외부와 내부, 남성적인 것과 여성적인 것, 이성적 세계와 신화적 세계의 경계를 오가며 사유한다. 전소정의 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 주변에서 만나게 되는 일상의 전문가들로서 이들은 예술과 일상적 삶이 구분되지 않고 조화롭게 뒤섞인 이상적인 상태를 꿈꾸지만, 사회안에서 여러 현실적인 문제에 부딪혀 그것이 분리되는 경험을 하게 되며, 이러한 경험은 아슬아슬한 줄 위를 걸어가는 광대처럼 일상과 예술, 이상과 현실, 예술가와 대중의 양극을 오가는 작가적 상황을 대변하고 있다.

작가는 이들의 삶을 통해 전통과 현대, 노동과 예술, 모방과 창조, 현실과 이상의 대립항들을 유기적으로 드러내며 일상과 예술의 경계에 선 그들을 바라보고, 이들을 통하여 예술가가 고민하고 있는 것, 해결되지 않은 문제, 닮아가고 싶은 점 등을 일상의 삶 자체로서 보여주고자 한다. 전시제목『밤이 다 되었으니 이 밤을 잊으십시오』는 타고르의「정원사」라는 시에서 인용하였다. 제목에서의 밤은 흘러가는 과거이고, 사회를 지탱해 준 노동 혹은 손의 의미이며, 또 꿈처럼 아름다운 장인들의 예술적 세계이다. 따라서 이 제목은 '이들의 밤은 고독하게 끝나가지만 그 삶은 반드시 기억되어야 함'을 암시하고 있다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce "Forget This Night When the Night Is No More," from September 4th through October 2nd, 2014, a solo exhibition of Sojung Jun, an emerging artist who has been receiving a great deal of attention in Korean contemporary art. ● In this exhibition, three older and two newer video works will be shown. Time Regained (2012), which is based on the life of a sign painter, A Day of A Tailor (2012), which portrays the daily life of a tailor of forty years, and Last Pleasure (2012), a piece that depicts the essence of art and the artist through a tight ropewalker, will be exhibited. Through the stories of a piano tuner and a female shellfish diver, in the two new works The Twelve Rooms (2014) and Treasure Island (2014), Jun metaphorically shows the world that surrounds artists, as well as the ideal that they are seeking. These two video works form an interesting pairing in the exhibition, thereby going back and forth within the boundary of east and west, outside and inside, masculine and feminine, and the rational and the irrational. ● The figures that appear in Sojung Jun's works are everyday professionals whose desire is for their art and life to not be separated and rather mixed together in harmony, but because of the practical issues in society, they experience a severing. Therefore their lives are like a tight ropewalker, nervously balancing between the two sides of everyday and art, ideal and reality. Through the lives of these people, Jun reveals the contrast between tradition and the present, labor and art, imitation and creation, and reality and idea, and looks at the boundaries that separate them, and it is through the lives of these people that the artist attempts to show the struggles and problems of artists, as well as characteristics to aspire towards. ● The title of the exhibition, "Forget This Night When the Night Is No More,", is a quotation from Tagore's poem "Gardener." "Night" in the title refers to the past, as well as the labor and hand that have maintained society, and the artistic world of master crafts people.
