Reactions and Spaces

두 작가의 작업은 공간에 대한 일반적이고 근대적인 인식에 대한 의문에서 출발한다. 공간은 그 가장자리의 측정된 값과 경계들로 제한되어 있다. 이는 공간의 측정과 사용이라는 목적에서 비롯된 범주로서의 공간이다. 하지만 이 두 작가는 공간의 경계가 서로 중첩되며 역전되는 상태를 탐색함과 동시에 공간의 제한성과 무한함에 대한 물음을 던진다. 공간의 한계는 어디까지인가? 당신은 그것을 어느 만큼 받아들일 수 있는가? 물리적 공간과 그 이면에서 우리는 무엇을 발견할 수 있는가? 이 질문들은 두 작가의 미디어 설치 작업 및 사운드 퍼포먼스, 드로잉 등 다양한 매체를 통해 공간의 여닫음, 작용과 반작용 그리고 한발 물러서 공간의 표면을 확장하고 이에 대한 반응을 살펴보는 작업으로 구체화된다. ● 이를테면 다비드 리프팅게의 프로젝트 「VOID」는 뉴 미디어를 도구로 무한대로 뻗은 새로운 공간을 창조한다. 관람자는 연출된 연쇄 반응에 따라 무제한의 가시적 공간을 거닐며 자유를 경험하게 된다. 한편 슈테판 티펜그라베의 「BEFORE AND AFTER」는 물리적 경계가 정확히 구분된 빈 공간의 이미지들을 그대로 나열하여 그 맥락을 달리하는 듯 보인다. 하지만 티펜그라베의 사진들은 새로운 공간의 무한성을 향한 초읽기라고 볼 수 있다. 동일하게 보이는 약 100개의 '빈 공간’들은 그 환경과 내재된 이야기들을 통해 완전히 다른 각각의 특수성을 지니게 된다. 이것은 관찰자들의 내면에서 특정한 연쇄 작용으로 새롭게 태어난다. ● 이러한 사고의 연쇄작용은 두 개의 인터렉티브 설치 작업으로 절정에 달한다. 「ELECTRONIC FLASH INSTALLATION #1」과 「ANALOG DELAY_산란하게 움직이는 빛과 소음에 가까운 소리」는 내적 반응과 상호 작용하여 감각과 신체적 인지의 한계에 도전하며 새로운 지점을 촉발한다. 빛과 소리, 또 그에 대한 심리적 반응들은 전시 공간 이면에 존재하지 않는 새로운 공간이 있음을 보여준다. ■ 스페이스 오뉴월

The artists proposal is to open and close spaces, to demand action and reaction, stepping back and reflect on space beyond the surface. Space is limited by its borders and defined by its measurements. The works of these two artists push these borders and try to go beyond, exploring. Participants are invited to experience and roam freely through this new seemingly unlimited space, guided by chain reaction. Dawid Liftinger’s project VOID creates with the tools of New Media a new space which stretches towards infinity. One might think, empty spaces with defined exact boundaries are seen in BEFORE AND AFTER by Stefan Tiefengraber, but that is not quite the case. These photographs open new space, towards a reading to the infinite. One hundred so called 'empty spaces' are shown, but they are in fact exchangeable, opening up a whole new idea about states and stories of spaces. That idea transforms into a certain kind of chain reaction which actually happens in the mind of the visitor. Following that thought, the arc of suspense reaches its peak with two interactive installations by the artists - ELECTRONIC FLASH INSTALLATION #1 and ANALOG DELAY. Flashing lights, unbearable sounds, a chain reaction triggered by the participant challenge the visitor’s senses and perception. All of these audio visual impressions create a new formerly non-existent space beyond the gallery and even our physical presence. The exhibition 'reactions and spaces' will show six recent works by artists Dawid Liftinger and Stefan Tiefengraber. Overlapping boundaries reverse and erase each other for a certain moment, to give the spectator the perception of endlessness and restriction at the same time. Where are the limits of spaces? How long can you push the button? Which rooms can be found outside of what is present? ■ Space O'NewWall
