퍼블릭 서비스: 친절, 봉사, 협동

전시를 준비하는 단계에서 자연스럽게 고려되는 전시 서문, 아티스트 스테이트먼트, 도슨트 프로그램 등은 전시의 주최자(작가, 기획자 등)가 관람객들에게 제공하는 친절한 안내책자와 같은 역할을 수행하고 있지만, 동시에 작품을 체험하는 감각을 차단하고 고정된 시선의 강요이기도 하다. 감상의 도움을 위해 제공되는 텍스트나 기타 자료들이 전시의 필수불가결한 요소로 자리매김하며 작품을 '체험하고 사유하는' 행위는 그것을 '읽고 해석하려는' 관객의 의지에 잠식당한다. 과연 주위의 도움 없이 자주적인 감상은 가능한가? 『퍼블릭 서비스: 친절, 봉사, 협동』은 작가 여섯 명과 함께 전시 관람 방식의 새로운 실험을 하고자 한다.

회화, 조소, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등의 시각예술을 지향하고 있는 여섯 명의 작가들은 전시 해설서가 부재했을 때, 전시를 찾은 관객과의 소통이 어려웠던 경험을 공통적으로 가지고 있다. 작업이 진행되는 과정 중에 작가의 내면적 성찰 내지는 작가가 표현하고자 하는 주제의식은 작품이 완성되어 갈수록 단단해지고 선명해지는 반해, 단지 물질적인 결과물로 작품을 마주해야하는 관객들에게 미시적인 사유의 영역이 쉽사리 포착되지 않는 까닭이었을 것이다. 이와 관련해 전시가 충실히 해설되었는지에 따라 '친절한' 또는 '불친절한'이란 수식이 따르는 최근 경향은 매우 흥미로운 지점이다. 이는 마치 관객들과의 교감의 정도에 따라 작품 혹은 전시 전체의 가치 정당성을 부여받게 되고 비로소 사회 공동체적 운명에 예속되는 인상을 준다. 최근 우연히 발견한 옛 독산 파출소 건물은 이미 파출소의 기능을 상실한 채 공공 서비스 기관의 흔적만이 남겨져 있었고, 이곳을 통해 공공 서비스가 제공하는 태도적 접근방식인 '친절', '봉사', '협동'을 떠올릴 수 있었다.

총 세 개의 층-지하 1층, 지상 1, 2층-으로 이루어진 건물을 활용한 전시는 최근 작가들이 주력하고 있는 작품들을 매개 삼아 2층에 배치되고 전시가 본격적으로 시작되는 1층에 작품해설의 거점을 마련해 작가들이 준비한 각기 다른 설명방식-의식조사지, 스토리텔링, 기념품 제공 등을 관객에게 제공한다. 앞서 언급했던 전시의 안내역할을 하는 장치들과 그에 상응하는 안내인의 해설 의지를 공공서비스의 형태로 치환하려는 이러한 시도는 기존의 미술 언어로 점철되어 있는 가이드 방식을 탈피함으로써 작품을 관람하는 새로운 감각을 확장하는 계기를 마련할 것이다 ■ 최윤석

So it seems that an introductory statement for the exhibition is now essential. A considerable guides such as foreword, artist statement or docent program are to provide the kindest way of approach, but simultaneously, it can also restrict or intercept the spectators' view for experiencing the art works. By having the contemplation gives the impression of being overwhelmed by the action of reading the exhibition. Is it possible to appreciate the art without any support materials? 『Public Service: Kindness, Service, Cooperation』 explores the faculty of exhibition materials and experiment the new manner of inspection to a contemporary exhibition. ● Six participating artists practice their work through their own method: painting, sculpture, video, performance and all of them once had experienced difficulty of communication with the spectators over the absence of support materials. It is interesting that their logic or the subject matter is getting clearer during the work process. However, the output is normally ended up with an obscure imagery, hence the invisible scope can hardly be discriminated without any explanation. Therefore, this dilemma inevitably requires the support materials in order to help the viewers for appreciating the full spectrum of the exhibition. At this point, there is worthy of notice that the tension arose between 'hospitality' and 'inhospitality' which refers the attitude of the presentation. This phenomenon seems to examine the value-rightness of the work and the artists' role in social-communal-destiny in the regard of the satisfactory communication amongst the participants (exhibitor/spectator). ● I unexpectedly found an empty police station and it is assumed as the place where the artists could explore the perception that is mentioned above. The place has lost the faculty of public institution, yet one could only grasp the evidence of the institution site. The participating artists came across this vestige as a metaphor of three key words: kindness, service and cooperation, which is the attitudinal approach of public service. ● The show is separated into 2 different parts. Firstly, the 1st floor is for the actual works of the artists that would carry the alibi of the show. Secondly, the ground floor and the basement would be the field of clues with various types of props: survey sheets, storytelling and souvenir so that the spectators can expect what they will see next. Public Service: Kindness, Service, Cooperation has such public service attitude as a background and focuses on the devices and the will of the explanation for the exhibition, therefore, it provokes to expend the sense of apprehension via breaking from the conventional way of roadmap which has been reenacted with the language of art. ■
