Cool Scene ● 카페에서 차를 마시고, 스포츠 경기장에서 관람을 하며, 지하철역에서 바쁘게 걸어가는 많은 사람들. 현대사회의 모습을 상징적으로 그려낸다면 이런 풍경이지 않을까? 우리가 사는 사회의 모습을 공공장소에서 찾아낸 서지선 작가는 배타적이면서도 동시에 타인과의 소통을 원하는 현대인의 욕망을 담백한 평면 작업으로 담아낸다. 이번 개인전에서는 그간의 색면 분할된 아크릴화 뿐만이 아니라 약간의 작업적 변화를 가져온 유리판, 드로잉과 같은 최근작들도 함께 소개된다. ● 그동안 줄곧 선보였던 서지선의 작업은 현대 도시에서 살아가는 인물과 그 주변의 사물들을 파스텔톤의 색면이라는 독특한 형식으로 표현해낸 것들이다. 현대사회를 살아가는 우리들은 개인적이고 고립적인 장소와 활동을 원하는 동시에 타인과 교류할 수 있는 공공의 장소와 활동을 추구한다. 아마도 우리는 점점 개인적이 되어갈수록 그것에서 오는 외로움을 보상받기라도 하듯이 여러 사람이 모이고 교류하는 공간을 더 원하게 될지도 모른다. 그러기에 공공의 장소에서 느껴지는 것은 활기와 화려함 외에도 이율배반적인 현대인의 욕망 뒤에 오는 허무함과 고독감이다. 서진선의 작업은 그 두 가지의 상반된 느낌을 하나로 엮어내고 있다. 현실의 풍경은 작가에 의해 절제된 형태와 색으로 재탄생된다. 모든 것이 축약되고 간결한 이미지로 남는다. 그리고 몇 가지의 아름다운 인공적인 색이 반복적으로 사용된다. 현대인의 모습을 작가의 감정을 배제한 채 일정한 객관적 거리를 두고 묘사한 듯하다.

서지선 작가는 최근 약간의 변화를 가져온다. 완벽하게 맞아 떨어진 색과 형태를 허물어트리기도 하고, 캔버스에서 다른 매체로도 옮겨간다. 그렇게 해서 만들어진 작품들은 조금 더 따듯하고 자유로운 느낌을 준다. 반추상의 형태로 보이는 작품들은 현대도시의 이미지에서 출발하였지만 형태를 흐트러트리는 과정을 통해 점점 자연의 모습에 가까워진다. 냉철하고 이성적이던 작가의 관점을 조금씩 버리고 있는 느낌이다. 또한 마치 이전의 아크릴 풍경화와 정물화에서 튀어 나온듯한 색유리판 설치 작업들과 이를 위한 드로잉들은 좀 더 미시적 관점으로 세상을 바라보려는 작가의 시도처럼 보인다. 이러한 최근작들은 작가의 여러 작업적 탐구에 대한 결과이기에 앞으로 이러한 실험들이 어떻게 발전되어갈지 더 큰 기대를 갖게 한다. ■ 정소라

Cool Scene ● Having tea at a café, watching sports at a stadium, walking fast in the subway station – these activities depict modern society. Artist Ji Sun Suh draws modern people's desire on plain flat surfaces. This exhibition, 『Cool Scene』 introduces acrylic works as well as new works including glass plates, and drawings. ● Artist Suh's existing works draw people and objects in the modern city with pastel shade. People in modern society want to be in personal and isolated places and participate in individualized activities. At the same time, they also pursue public places and activities, enabling communication other people. People seem to want to be in communicative places because of loneliness that originates from individualism. Therefore, public places give us energy as well as a feeling of loneliness reflecting contemporary people's dual desires. Suh's works interweave these two different feelings into one picture. Suh gives the landscape of reality rebirth into temperate forms and colors. Everything is converted into concise images. In addition, several beautiful colors are used repeatedly. It seems that the portraits of modern people are depicted objectively at a distance. ● Artist Suh has recently been adding variety to her works. She uses perfectly aligned colors and forms, and other bases instead of canvas. They provide a warm and free atmosphere. Her works started from images of the modern city and gets closer nature by the process of form-scattering. Suh seems to subtly drop her cool and rational perspective. In addition, works on colored glass plates are striking along with her former acrylics and drawings in that they show her intention to look at the world from a microscopic viewpoint. These new works are results of her artistic investigation that causes the audience to anticipate her future works. ■ JUNGSORA
