SURFACE

갤러리바톤은 두 명의 젊은 페인터, 윤석원(Yoon Suk One, b.1983) / 배민영(Bae Min Young, b.1985)의 2인전 『SURFACE』 를 7월 25일 부터 8월23일까지 압구정동 전시공간에서 개최한다. ● 평면 회화가 오랫동안 누려왔던 미술사에서의 지배적 지위가 일정 부분 퇴색된 가운데 전업 페인터로서 첫 발을 디디게 되는 젊은 작가들은 회화의 일시적인 상대적 침체가 자기 자신에게 끼칠 영향에 대해서 생각해 보지 않을 수 없다. 점점 대형화하는 전시공간, 자극이 필수 요소가 되어 버린 분위기 등을 감안할 때, 젊은 페인터의 회화 작품이 내는 울림이 과연 어떤 반향을 이끌어 낼 수 있을까에 대한 회의적인 시각도 한 몫 거들기 때문이다. 하지만 장르적 선호도나 유행은 고착화 될 수 없음은 유구한 미술사를 통해 입증되어 왔고, 특히 1980년 이후 포스트모던이라는 애매하고 광범위한 얼개 안에서 각개 약진을 해가고 있는 현대 미술계의 현황은 이러한 회화라는 장르에 대한 일부의 회의론에 대한 적절한 반론이 될 수 있다. ● 이러한 대외적인 환경 안에서 전업 페인터로써 첫 발을 내딛는 윤석원과 배민영이 주목을 받는 이유는 두 작가 모두 작품의 궁극적인 지향점을 "어떤 식으로 최종적으로 보여질 것인가"에 두지 않고, 일관된 주제에 대한 응축된 생각과 고찰을 "어떤 방식으로 펼쳐내야 하나"에 두기 때문이다. 전자는 다분히 시류에 편승하고자 하는 유혹에서 자유로울 수 없기에 자칫하다간 작가의 개성을 해치는 결과를 초래할 수 있지만, 후자의 경우는 작품 주제와 실제적인 표현 간의 내적인 끊임없는 화합, 투쟁을 통한 최종 결과물이 "하나의 의식적 흐름이 멎는 지점"이기 때문에 오롯이 자기가 현시화하려 했던 주제를 작가 스스로도 최초로 발견하게 되는 순간을 선사한다. 그렇기에 최종 결과물인 캔버스의 Surface는 작가에게도 자기 의식의 시각화를 체험할 수 있는 중요한 장소이다.

배민영은 현대인들이 자신들의 주체적인 욕구보다는 타인에게 어떻게 '보여지는가'를 고민하고 추구하는데에 열중한 다는 점에 주목하여 SURFACE를 풀어내었다. 현대인들은 표면적 이미지를 통해 본인이 스스로 풍경 속 하나의 대상으로 속하길 원하며 내가 아닌 타인의 시선으로 철저히 3인칭적인 존재감을 확인하고 싶어한다는 작가의 경험적인 시선이 작품의 출발점이다. 캔버스에 그려지는 기각적인 요소와 인간이 만들어낸 사물과 인간과의 관계, 그 사이를 관통하는 소유와 소비의 허무함, 그리고 현실/비현실 등 양극에서 서로를 향해 던져지는 역설과 아이러니의 이중적인 요소들이 빚어내는 찬란하고 동시에 허무한 세계를 담아낸 배민영의 SURFACE. 그 표면에 투영되는 현실과 욕망은 끝없는 애증 관계로 남아있게 될 것이다. ● 윤석원의 SURFACE는 응축된 감정의 표면이다. 각기 다른 시기와 장소에서 만들어진 석상의 이미지를 소재로 택하여 침식과 풍화, 혹은 재해나 전쟁을 거치며 외관이 변형된 석상들에 담겨진 오랜 시간의 흔적에 주목하였다. 석상이 놓인 장면을 하나의 풍경으로 받아들이고 그 풍경 속에 작가의 심리상태를 더해 새로운 풍광을 만들어 내는데, 본래의 질감을 극대화 하거나 소거하는 등 다양한 방식으로 본래의 풍경을 변환시키는 작업은, 이미 사라진 것과 앞으로 사라지려 하는 것들에 대한 심리적 복기 과정이라 할 수도 있다. 시간의 비가역성을 끊임없이 되짚으며 진행된 작업은 감정의 극력한 몰입이 수반되었고 작업이 진행될 수록 소재가 되었던 이미지의 형태가 변형됨은 물론 그것의 본래 의미와도 멀어지며, 전에 없는 심상과 질감의 화면을 만들어 내게 된다. ● 갤러리바톤이 주목한 두 젊은 페인터 윤석원과 배민영의 2인전 "SURFACE"는 오는 8월23일까지 갤러리바톤 압구정동 전시공간에서 선보이게 된다. ■ 갤러리바톤

Gallery Baton is pleased to present "SURFACE", a group exhibition of the works by Yoon Suk One (b. 1983) and Bae Min Young (b. 1985), from July 25th to August 23rd at Apgujeong exhibit space. ● In the midst of the time where the dominant position of painting within art history has partly faded, young artists who are taking their first step as full-time painters must think about how the temporarily relative recession of painting could affect them. Considering the current atmosphere in which large exhibition space and stimulus have become imperative, there also is a skeptical view about what kind of direction the repercussions created by the paintings of young painters could elicit. Nevertheless, it has been proven through the ages of art history that preferences of genres and fashion cannot be fixed. In particular, since the 1980s the present condition of contemporary art in which individual genre has advanced within the vague and broad framework called postmodern could set forth a counterargument to the partial skepticism about painting as a genre. ● The reason that Yoon Suk One and Bae Min Young, who are taking their first step as full-time painters within this external environment, are receiving attention is that both artists put eventual intention point of their artworks on "how to spread" condensed thought and consideration with a consistent theme, not on "how the final result will be shown". The latter case could harm the individuality of the artists as a consequence, since it cannot be free from the temptation of going along with the current trends. However, in the case of the former point, what they focus on the final product becomes "a point where the stream of consciousness stops" through the internally incessant unity and struggle between the theme and realized expression. Therefore, it presents a moment in which the artists themselves discover for the first time the central theme that they tried to unfold. Thus, the surface of the canvas, which is the end product, becomes an essential space for the artists to experience the visualization of their senses. ● The SURFACE of Yoon Suk One is condensed sentiment. By choosing the images of statues made in various periods and places, the artist has focused on the imprint of the time contained in the statues, in which their outer appearance has been transformed through erosion, weathering, natural disaster or war. The artist creates new scenery by adding his state of mind as he accepts the scene of the statues as a landscape. The process of converting the original landscape in various ways like maximizing or deleting the texture of the original scenery could be called a psychologically duplicating process of recording what is already gone and what is about to fade away. Ceaselessly retracing the irreversibility of time, his works have conducted the utmost involvement of emotions, and as the works progress the images, once used as subject matter, become transformed and eventually become estranged from the original meaning. Moreover, they create the unprecedented screen of imagery and texture. ● Bae Min Young has explored SURFACE in a direction devoted to how people today worry about and pursue the way they are 'shown' to others than their own independent needs. The starting point of her works is her empirical gaze of modern people, how they want to belong to one of the subjects within the landscape and confirm their presence as a third person by the eyes of others. Bae Min Young's SURFACE includes both brilliant and empty world brought about by dual elements of paradox and irony thrown at each other from the bipolar ends, such as the relationship among the dismissed elements on the canvases, man-made objects and human beings, the possession that penetrates this relationship and the emptiness of consumption, and reality versus imagination. The reality and desire projected on the surface will forever remain as love-hate relationship. ● The exhibition "SURFACE" of the works by two young artists Yoon Suk One and Bae Min Young, who are given a major attention from Gallery Baton, will be on view at Apgujeong-dong exhibit space until August 23rd. ■ GB
