현대미술은 관람객을 알쏭달쏭하게 만들어 궁금증을 자아내기도 하고, 너무 어려워 감상을 포기하게 만들기도 합니다. 작가에게, 큐레이터에게, 혹은 도슨트에게 작품의 제작의도를 직접 듣지 않고서는 작품의 의미를 쉽사리 알아채기 힘들죠. 작품이 작가의 손을 떠난 순간 작품에 대한 해석과 감상은 관람객의 몫일 텐데도 여전히 관람객들은 그 진의(眞意)가 궁금하기만 합니다.

이번 전시는 한 가지 주제로 정의할 수 없는 경기창작센터 입주작가 9명의 다양한 작품들을 작가들의 사사로운 '사연(story)'에서부터 풀어가 보려 합니다. 관람객들은 작가들이 어떤 계기로 현재의 작업을 하게 되었는지, 작품을 통해 이야기 하고자 하는 것이 무엇인지, 또 모두가 궁금해할만한 숨은 뒷이야기는 없는지 등을 작가들의 사연과 함께 작품을 마주하는 것이지요. 누구에게나 나름대로의 사연이 있듯 현대미술 작가들에게도 작품에 대한 사연이 있지 않을까요? 그 사연 속에서 우린 작가의 생각에 공감하며 소통을 이끌어낼 수도 있겠지요.

Contemporary art sometimes stimulates the curiosity of audiences by puzzling them. Sometimes it is so difficult to understand that it makes the audience – one who would otherwise appreciate it – give up. At times it is hard to know the meaning of the work without hearing the purpose of the work directly from the artist, curator, or docent. The moment an artwork is out of the artist's hands, the interpretation and appreciation of an artwork is given over to an audience, however audiences are still curious about the real intentions behind the work. ● This exhibition attempts to interpret the artworks of nine artists-in-residence at Gyeonggi Creation Center from their miscellaneous 'stories.' Their stories are difficult to categorize under one theme. The audience will encounter stories of artists with artworks, what inspired the artists to begin the present works, what they try to say through their works, the back-stories that everyone is curious about. Everybody has his/her own story - perhaps contemporary artists have their own stories too? In these stories, we would be able to empathize and communicate with the artists' thoughts. ● Through the Everybody has a Story exhibition, in pursuit of introducing the various creative tendencies in the field of contemporary art, we hope to provide a very absorbing place for the nine artists' artworks. We also expect this to be an opportunity that breaks the bias that 'contemporary art is difficult.' ■ Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art
