증상 정원 Symptom Garden

사춘기의 징후인 여드름이 포도나무에 옮아갔다는 기사를 읽은 적이 있다. 정확히 말하자면, 인간 피부에 서식하는 여드름 균이 포도나무에 안착해 유실수로 길들인 덕에 우리가 맛 좋은 와인을 즐길 수 있다는 주장이었다. 이 기사는 나에게 꽤 흥미로운 이미지를 제공하였는데, 한 무리의 여드름이 의지를 가지고 이 생물 저 생물 옮겨 다니는 장면이 그것이었다. 살면서 맺게 되는 무수한 관계들을 생각했을 때, 나는 얼마나 많은 사물과 생명체들에게 무언가를 감염시키며 살아왔는지, 그리고 나는 얼마나 많은 것들에 감염되었을지 상상이 되지 않는다. 그 모든 감염의 증상이 일시에 두드러진다면, 아마 나는 걸어 다니는 증상 공동체처럼 보일 것이다. 그렇다면 그 증상들은 관계가 생성되는 증거로서 의미를 가질 수 있을 것인가. 그리고 관계 맺음이 남긴 그 증상들은 독립된 주체로서 무럭무럭 자라 어느 곳에서나 적응해서 살아나갈 수 있을 것인가.

이런 의문들을 가지고 가상의 정원에 그 증상들을 파종해 보기로 한다. 보다 싱그러운 정원을 위해 이제는 절교한 사람들의 토막토막을 거름으로 사용하였다. 서로를 자양분 삼아 성장해온 우리는 어떤 모습의 정원을 보여줄지 두렵고 불안하고 설레는 마음이다. 하지만 유령처럼 흐릿하고 모호했던 당신과 나의 관계는 이제 비로소 뚜렷한 실체가 되고, 문득결별의 시간이 오더라도 우리가 함께 했던 증거들은 이 정원에서 꿈틀꿈틀 살아나갈 것이다. ■ 김소영

Symptom Garden ● I have read an article saying that acne, a symptom of puberty, was transmitted to the vine. Specifically, people can enjoy excellent wine because acne germs that spread from human skin to grapevines transformed them into fruit trees. This article presented me an interesting image of a swarm of pimples that were moving consciously from one life to another. Considering countless relationships established in life, I cannot imagine how many objects and organisms I have infected and how many of them have infected me. If all the signs of infection were brought out, I might look like a walking complex of symptoms. ● Then, can the symptoms be proved as a significant evidence of a relationship being newly built? Is it possible that the symptoms of interaction can grow well as independent agents and adapt themselves to any environment? ● With these questions, I tried sowing the symptom-seeds in an imaginary garden. Pieces of people now broken off with me were used as fertilizers for a fresher garden. Having nourished each other, we are anxious and excited to see what kind of garden it will become. However, the relationship between you and I that was faint and vague as a ghost becomes concrete substance at last, and the evidence so four relationship will sprout and grow in this garden even if the moment of parting comes. ■ KIMSOYOUNG
