Utopia in Emptiness

산이나 구름, 안개, 물, 바위, 그리고 이러저러한 자연물을 닮은 형상들과 그것들의 포치는 산수화를 연상시킨다. 아니나 다를까, 그는 무릉도원을 화면 구성의 바탕으로 설정하고 있었기에 화면 전반에서 산수화의 분위기를 느낄 수 있었던 것이다. 무릉도원이라면 이속(離俗)과 탈진(脫塵)의 이상향으로서 오랜 동안 화제(畵題)가 되어 왔었고, 그에 앞서 산수화라는 것이 노장의 사상을 바탕으로 한 이념적, 심미적 공간으로서의 자연이라는 인식이 담겨 있는 그림이라는 점에서, 이상과 현실의 간극을 주제로 하는 그의 이러한 차용은 자연스러운 것이 아닐 수 없다. 동양의 산수나 무릉도원(유토피아)과 같은 이상화 된 자연풍경을 제3의 공간으로 재해석하고, 시각화하고 있다. 재해석된 산수나 유토피아는 이상향을 묘사하는 공간이지만, 현실에 존재하지 않는 장소이며 동시에 인간이 갈망하는 가상의 공간이다. 회화 작품 안에서 보여지는 유토피아(무릉도원, 이상화된 산수 등)는 이상(욕망)에 도달하고자 하는 인간의 욕망과 그렇지 못한 현실(삶)의 괴리, 그 사이의 공간으로 해석되고, 표현된다. ■ 전희경

Buddhist art or korean folk painting, and spread mountains, clouds, fog, water, rocks and natural object like figures are suggestive of oriental landscapes. enough, since she had taken paradise as a basic composition of her pictures, you might feel a mood of landscape painting. The paradise has been a well-known motif as an Canaan for a long time. before the theme matter, considering the fact that oriental landscapes connote ideological and aesthetic space of nature based on Taoism, it is very reasonable that she borrowed from Orientalism and decide the theme on the gap of ideal and reality. ■

I try to reinterpret and visualize idealized nature landscape such as utopia in the East(Shangri-la, paradise) as 'the Third Space'. Reinterpreted utopia(shangri-la) is the space that describes ideal, but that does not exist in reality. At the same time, it is the virtual space that human being longs for. Utopia showed in my paintings is interpreted and represented as the gap between our desire toward ideal and real life and as the space between them . ■ jeikei JEONHEEKYOUNG
