이번 전시는 최근 한국 사진계에서 즉물주의적 시각의 작품을 보여주며 주목받고 있는 두 신인 작가의 작품을 통하여 한국 현대미술에서의 사진의 현황과 앞으로의 전개 방향을 모색해 보고자 한다. ● 최근 현대미술로서의 사진을 보면 객관적이고 냉정한 시각으로 대상을 드러내며 실재성을 강조하는 작품들이 많이 등장하고 있다. 두 작가는 각각 사람과 사물을 주제로 다루고 있지만 대상을 즉물적 시각으로 파악하고 있다는 점에서 공통점을 드러내며, 최근 현대미술에서 중요하게 재해석되고 있는 '오브제'의 개념을 사진에 적용시켜 보여주므로서 전통적 사진 미학의 새로운 확장 가능성을 보여주고 있다.

이번 전시에서는 물질화(Reification) 되어버린 도시와 그 이면의 자화상을 통하여 현대인의 삶을 되돌아보게 하는 김태동의「Day Break」시리즈와 정지현의「Construction Site Dreg」시리즈를 선보일 예정이다. ● 김태동의「Day Break」시리즈는 새벽에 도심을 배회하다 우연히 만난 사람들을 연출이나 주관적 감정 없이 있는 그대로 촬영하여 우리가 살고 있는 이 도시와 현실의 냉정함을 보여주고 있다. 정지현의「Construction Site Dreg」시리즈는 공사가 완성됨과 동시에 아무런 가치 없이 버려지는 잔여물들을 현장에서 직접 촬영한 작품들로서, 이를 통하여 인간성을 상실해 가는 현대와 현대인의 삶을 은유적으로 표현해내고 있다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Taedong Kim and Jihyun Jung's exhibition『Site and Place』, which runs from July 3rd through August 28th. ● This exhibition seeks to explore the current status as well as the future direction of photography within Korean contemporary art through two emerging artists whose reality-driven works have garnered much attention. ● There has been a recent trend in contemporary photography to present the subject in a cold and objective manner by emphasizing its thingness. The two artists both deal with people and objects as their subject matter, but their similarity lies in the fact that they see their subject from a practical perspective, and by applying photography to the concept of the "object," which has been a significantly reinterpreted in contemporary art, the artists are able to show new, expansive possibilities in the traditional aesthetic of photography. ● This exhibition will showcase Taedong Kim's series "Day Break" and Jihyun Jung's series "Construction Site Dreg," both bodies of work that causes one to reflect on contemporary society through the reification of cities as well as self-portraiture. ● Taedong Kim's series "Day Break" are images of people the artist met by chance while wandering around the city at dawn, which he captures without any editing and thereby presents the bare reality of the city without subjective feelings. Jihyun Jung's series "Construction Site Dreg" comprises of images taken on site from completed construction sites as well as worthless waste and detritus around there that has been thrown away, and through these he metaphorically expresses the dehumanized state of contemporary life. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
