100DAYS

본 전시는 작가가 1에서 100까지 매일 숫자를 따라가면서 해당 숫자와 관련된 작업을 진행했던 '100DAYS PROJECT'의 최종 결과물을 선보이는 자리다. 이 전시는 프로젝트 기간 (2013.8.7.~2013.11.14) 동안의 결과물과 프로젝트 기간 이후의 작업으로 구성되는데, 두 부분은 100이라는 숫자를 기준으로 하나의 공간 속에서 맞물린다. 전시장에 들어온 관객은 물이 펄펄 끓고 있는 냄비를 마주하게 되는데, 이것은 전시 제목인 『100DAYS』의 '100' 이라는 숫자를 알리는 매개체이자, 다른 한편으로는 단순히 물이 끓는다는 물리적인 상태를 제시한다. 냄비의 물이 끓으면 전시장 바닥에 놓인 세 개의 오브제가 작동하는데, 이것들의 움직임으로 인해 발생되는 소리와 시각적 변형은, 그것이 가진 제한적이고 임시적인 상태를 두드러지게 한다. 이는 프로젝트 기간과 그 이후에 겪은 작가의 상황 및 심리상태를 은유적으로 보여준다. ● 미대 대학원을 갓 졸업한 작가는 작업을 하는 것을 의무로 받아들이기 위해 매일 작업을 해야 하는 규칙을 세웠다. '무엇'을 하느냐 보다는 '한다'는 행위 자체에 초점이 맞춰져 있었고, 하루라는 시간적 범위와 수 적 범위가 있었기 때문에 하루작업의 결과물은 단순하고 초라했다. 한편 규칙이라는 것이 생기면서 규칙을 지키느냐 마느냐의 문제도 따라왔고, 결국 100일 중 11일은 규칙을 지키지 못하고 프로젝트가 끝났다. 작가는 작업을 하는 것을 사회적, 경제적 독립의 필수조건으로 여기고 의무로 받아들였지만, 정작 이 프로젝트의 결과물은 그러한 종류의 독립을 직접적으로 보상해 주지는 않았다. '100DAYS PROJECT'는 과정 속에서 예상치 못한 조건들의 개입으로 처음의 의도와는 다른, 새로운 종착지이자 출발점에 와 있다. 작가는 반복되지만 조금씩 달라지고, 의도와 예상을 비켜가며, 끝난 줄 알았지만 끝이 아닌 상황 등 작업과정 속의 고민과 갈등을 이 전시를 통해 빠짐없이 보여주고자 한다. ■ 김혜경

This exhibition presents the outcome of the 「100 DAYS PROJECT」, in which the artist produces art that corresponds to the number of each day that passes, from 1 to 100. The exhibition consists of two parts, firstly the work produced during the period of the project (2013.8.7 ~ 2013.11.14), and secondly the work done after the period of project. Both parts converge around a reference point - the number 100. The audience entering the exhibition space encounters a pot of boiling water. On the one hand it is a medium that refers to the number '100' in the title of exhibition 「100 DAYS」. On the other hand it simply suggests the physical state of boiling water. When the water in the pot starts to boil, three objects placed on the gallery floor begin operating. The auditory and visual transformation caused by the movement of the objects highlight their limited and temporary state. This metaphorically shows the situation and psychological state that the artist has gone through during the project and thereafter. ● The artist, a recent MFA graduate, sets up a rule of producing art every day in order to accept an art practice as her obligation. As she focuses on the act of 'doing' rather than thinking 'what', and has limitations of time (the day) and numbers, the output of one day is simple and humble. Meanwhile, with the advent of the rule, the matter of breaking the rules appears - within eleven of one hundred days she opts-out of the rules. While the artist regards making art as a prerequisite for social and economic independence - and accepts this as her obligation -, the outcome of this project does not directly reward this kind of independence. Through the intervention of unexpected conditions appearing throughout the process, the 「100 DAYS PROJECT」arrives at a new destination and starting point from what was initially intended. Repeating but gradually changing and deviating from intention and anticipation, the artist attempts to show the troubles and conflicts in a continuous and ever-changing working process. ■ Kim Hyekyung
