나의 작업은 익숙하지만 동시에 낯설기도 한 일상의 공간을 재해석하는 것에서 시작한다. 공간에 대한 회화적 관심은 낯선 나라에 머물던 시기에 확장되었다. 낯선 땅, 낯선 말, 낯선 문화와 공간에서 나는 경계인 이었다. 머물던 여러 공간들을 해체하거나 비틀어보고, 재해석하며, 나는 그 두 세계 사이의 틈을 그리기 시작하였다. 그 화면 안에서 무수히 많은 점 선 면들은 부유하고 중첩한다. 초기의 작업들이 현대의 공간에서 오는 인상이나 심리적 함축 등에 집중했다면, 최근의 작업은 경계 자체의 안과 밖, 차이와 간극의 사이를 넘나드는 데 중심을 둔다. 내가 낯선 나라에서 경험한 것과 유사하게 이 시대의 많은 사람들이 경계에 살고 있다. 다른 어떤 시대보다도 지금, 여기를 첨예한 경계로 느끼는 것은 내가, 우리가 그 안에 몸을 담그고 있기 때문이리라. ● 나의 작업은 우리가 경계를 긋고 있는 여러 것들: 구상과 비구상, 동과 서, 중심과 주변, 안과 밖, 현실과 환영, 과거와 현재와 미래를 넘나들며 나와 세계를 찬찬히 들여다보고 둘 사이의 소통을 꿈꾼다. 그리고 나는 공간을 그린다. 그러나 이것은 공간이 아니다. ■ 고은화

Just Beyond ● I depict spaces. I re interpret the mundane spaces which can be intimate and also unaccustomed. My interest in architectural spaces enlarged when I lived in a foreign land where I was a marginal man. Transforming the familiar contours of an ordinary space into an illusory topography, I examined the chasms between the two different worlds. In the frame, a variety of dots, lines and planes are floating through the space and overlapped each other insinuating the puzzling nature of the space. ● Whereas previous works focused on the impressions and psychological implications from the spaces, I recently concentrated more on in-and-out of a space as a boundary itself. Similar to my personal experience in a foreign land, many people in this age are living on the edge. We feel this era more critical than any other because we are here in this world at this moment. ● Through my work, I contemplate myself and the world and speculate to reconcile them by “in-and-out” of the boundaries: abstraction: representation, east: west, center: periphery, inside: outside, reality: imagination, and fast, present and future. And I depict a space. However, this is not a space. ■ GOHEUNA
