서상익 작가는 2012년 이후 작업한 드로잉들을 주로 선보인다. 지금까지 3회의 개인전을 거치면서 그는 작가적 현실과 고민을 상상과 은유, 회화적 오마주로 풀어내고, 이로써 자신만의 작업세계를 고찰해오고 있다. 눈에 띄는 점 하나는 회화 작가로서의 고민 자체를 작업의 중심으로 끌어들이고 있는 것이다. 드로잉들 안에서 작가는 자신의 위치를 객관적으로 가늠하고자 하며, 또 묻고자 한다. 작가의 실제적 삶의 흔적들 역시 곳곳에서 묻어나는데, 아마도 드로잉이 갖는 직접성 혹은 즉흥성에서 기인한다. 그리고 이것이 바로 드로잉의 매력이다.

드로잉들로 우리는 그의 일상을 짐작할 수 있고, 또 작가적 고민의 방향을 어림해 볼 수도 있다. 그의 작업 노트에서 비롯된 전시제목 '소외한 자들의 공간'은 드로잉 작업들을 큰 맥락에서 다가갈 수 있게 해준다. 작가는 외적 세계를 일정하게 차단하고, 자신만의 공간에 은둔한다. 때문에 그곳은 허름하고, 어두컴컴하지만 굴 속처럼 안온하다. 거기서 일명 '소외한 자'는 현실의 상처와 아픔을 응시하고, 좌절하고 또 치유한다. 그리고 갈구하고, 상상하며 자신만의 성을 구축한다. 그런 점에서 드로잉들은 성 안의 내밀하고도 또 사소한 흔적들이자, 감정의 편린들이다. ■ 갤러리 기체

소외된, 아니 소외한 자들의 공간 ● "무엇이 나를 상상하게 만드는가? 외부에 대한 불편함일 수 도 있겠지만, 가장 큰 이유는 자신이라는 '개인'이 우선이라는 당연한 본능일 것이다. 어릴 때부터 다른 사람들과 섞여 있을 때 말이 별로 없던 나는 소위 말하는 존재감이 없는 사람이었다. 하지만 난 그게 편했다. 괜한 오해를 살 필요도 없었고, 부담스러운 시선도 싫었다. 그렇게 난 소외되기 보다는 소외하며 살아왔다. 외부의 시선이나 사회적 통념에서 소외된, 하지만 스스로는 그런 통념을 소외하며 살아가는 그런 존재가 되길 원했다. 그리고 그런 존재들이 살아가는 방식을 그림으로 보여주고자 했다." ■ 서상익

The show entitled 'A place for self-alienators' will exhibit over 20 drawings mainly since 2012. And also there are including 2 new paintings. Sangik Seo, who undergone three solo exhibitions before has experimented with his esthetical matter in painting by imagination, metaphor and homage for the greatest painters. One of notable things in Sangik Seo's whole works is that he has continually been kept his artistic concept itself as a main subject of the painting. In his drawings, therefore, the artist tends to see and ask of his actual position objectively. Immediacy of drawing leads to unveiling of traces something private and this is the most fascination aspect of drawing. ■ GALLERY KICHE

A PLACE FOR SELF-ALIENATORS ● "What makes me to imagine? The most essential factor is really matter of self-centered nature rather than inconvenient to the outside world. From my childhood, I am one who is hard to have existence in lingual because of that I used to be an oyster in public. However, it is comfortable. I wouldn't like to get any misunderstanding and burdened eyes of others. In this way, I choose self-alienated life than alienated from a common idea of society or the outside. Also I want to be a being like who is alienating conventional idea and the others by oneself. I tend to show the way of self-alienators living with the painting." ■ SEOSANGIK
