지옥 (地獄, The HELL) ● 한모금의 지독한 독을 삼키고 타는 목마름에 손에 닿는 것이 무엇이든 들이켜야만 하는 상황, 그러한 상황에서 보게 되는 눈앞의 환영(illusion), 이 환영 따라 지옥의 문을 들어서서 악마의 재물이 된다면, 무엇인들 명확히 보고 듣고 느낄 수 있을까. 사악한 힘에 취해 환각을 보게 되는 삶 속에서 '견자(見者 Voyant)'가 될 수 있을까? ● 백년을 훌쩍 뛰어 넘어 김윤섭이 만난 랭보(Arthur Rimbaud, 1854 ~ 1891), 이제 막 30대의 삶에 접어든 젊은 작가는 이 시대, 젊은 예술가의 초상이다. 그가 삼킨 '독'이 온몸에 퍼져 눈앞에서 보게 되는 환영, 그것은 어떤 모습일까. 랭보가 말한 '견자'가 되기 위해 경험해야하는 모든 것, 그 모든 것의 경험 속에서 발견하는 '것(things)'이 지옥이라면, 지옥임을 아는 것이 모르는 것보다 행복한 것일까.

이전의 전시가 단색을 통해 순수한 회화, 절대적 회화를 추구하면서 작품이 보여 지는 장소까지 하나의 회화적 영역으로 확장해 색과 색이 놓인 장소 그리고 그것을 보는 시선이 만날 때 비로소 완성되는 공간적 확장을 시도했다면, 이번 아트스페이스펄에서 전시되는 『선의 사유』는 캔버스의 촉각적 요소, 색을 이루는 물감의 물성 그리고 작가의 행위가 만나 각각의 존재만큼의 울림이 서로 공명하는 하나의 장소가 된다. 각각의 무게만큼의 존재와 존재가 만나는 순간 이루어지는 공명의 장은 그간에 작가가 보여주었던 순수한 색을 통해 절대적 회화를 추구했던 것과 다르지만 같고, 같지만 다른 차이 속에서 몸과 정신의 관계, 몸을 움직이는 정신, 그런 정신이 담긴 몸의 흔적을 '선(線,line)에 담아 놓는다. 그것은 선이지만, 면으로 스며들면서 동시에 자신의 존재감을 드러내는 색의 빛이고 존재의 울림이 된다. 그것은 내가 사물과 만나고 사물 속에서 나를 발견하는 숭고한 합일의 순간일 것이다.

예리한 감각의 더듬이를 가진 시인은 세상의 비밀을 언어의 연금술로 말하는 사람들이다. 열린 감각의 문을 통과해서 만난 미지의 세계를 언어의 울림으로 들려주는 시인의 음성을 김윤섭은 그 자신을 둘러싼 현실, 악마와의 입맞춤, 그 달콤한 독이 주는 짧은 환상 속에서 '나'로서가 아닌, '타인'이 되어 익명의 나를 보듯 무감각이 투영된 환영, 현실과 비현실을 넘나들며 시각적 울림을 전한다. ● 아트스페이스 펄의 초대전인 『지옥地獄』은 김윤섭 작가가 상상 공간에서 만나게 된 랭보의 시선으로 현재의 자신을 바라본 '것(things)'이다. 그는 '내적 망명에서 길을 걷다가 랭보와 조우'하면서 가장 달콤한 순간이 지옥일 수 있음에 대한 경험담을 인터넷을 통해 얻은 익명의 이미지 혹은 유명한 잡지의 표지를 장식하는 사진작가들의 이미지에 투영하고 있다. 이미지의 일차적인 요소는 랭보의 자전적 영화 토탈 이크립스(Total Eclipse)에서 영감을 얻었다고 한다. 이번 전시는 랭보가 견자를 얘기하면서 '견자가 되려면 모든 것을 경험해야한다.'는 것과 '지옥의 문'이 갖는 의미에 대한 그 자신의 시선이 담겨있다. ● 윤섭은 "이번에 전시하는 작업은 '17살의 소년이 있다.' 라는 전제를 통해 랭보 속으로 들어가는 것이 아니라, 단지 나 자신의 삶에 대입해보려는 시도, 그러한 시도는 랭보가 살았던 시간을 지나서 21세기의 내가 살아가고 경험하는 삶이 주는 무게에서 랭보를 통해 나 자신의 삶의 의미를 새롭게 바라보는 시선"이라고 한다. 이 같은 시선을 작가는 입체 꼴라주와 평면위에 집적한 추상이미지에 담아 놓았다. 이 추상 이미지를 그는 '초평면hyperplane'이라는 시각에서 모든 것을 나누고 나누어서 하나의 화면에 각각의 서로 다른 모양이지만 평면 위에 쪼개고 쪼개진 면, 즉 초평면으로 재구성하고 있다. ● 김윤섭은 이태원에 창작공간을 마련하고 살면서 경험하는 새로운 삶, 그곳에서 그동안 느끼지 못했던 현실적 삶을 발견한다. 그가 보는 환영(illusion), 환영과도 같은 현실(reality)은 창작활동을 위해 매년 옮겨 다닌 5년의 레지던스(residence) 생활을 벗어나 삶의 공간이자 창작의 공간에서 느끼는 현실의 무게를 그의 시각적 울림으로 보여주고 있는 것이다. ● 마치 랭보의 '지옥에서 보낸 한철'이 가장 행복한 순간이자 가장 힘든 시기였던 것처럼, 지금 나의 '지옥', 환영과 현실 사이에서 살아가는 나의 삶 역시 랭보가 경험했던 것과 비슷한 것 같다고 말한다. 김윤섭이 바라보는 '지옥'은 누구나 한번쯤 천당과 지옥을 오가는 경험, 지독한 아픔과 불행에서 이것이 바로 지옥이고, 또 그 반대의 경험을 하면서 이게 바로 천국이 아닐까? 라고 생각해 보았던 경험, 그것이 어디 다른 곳에 있는 것이 아니라 바로 우리가 발 딛고 사는 이곳, 삶의 현실 속에 있는 것임을 본다. 이번 전시는 잡지의 표지를 장식하는 사진이미지를 차용해서 만든 입체 꼴라쥬와 그러한 이미지를 나누고 나누어 추상적인 화면을 만들어 놓은 작품과 더불어 한 점을 완성하는데 4~5시간이 걸려 그린 펜화 143점과 100호 유화 한 점도 같이 전시가 된다. ■ 김옥렬

The Hell ● Have you ever imagined seeing, hearing, and feeling things clearly when entering the gate of hell in an illusion of which you had to fumble around for something to detoxify the poison that you swallowed? Is it possible that you could still be conscious enough to be a voyant about whom Arthur Rimbaud(1854~1891) mentioned in his letter when you are enslaved to a demon in a state of a hallucination? ● Yunseob Kim, who is in his early thirties, is like a portrait of a typical young artist in these days as Arthur Rimbaud was in his lifetime. He encounters Rimbaud who got poisoned into a hallucination and experiences what Rimbaud might have experienced while being poisoned. What does the illusionary image that he or Rimbaud saw while being poisoned look like? If he sees things that belong to hell while experiencing lots of things to be a seer whom Rimbaud once gave a definition of, is it better for him to recognize hell than to not know about it at all? ● Poets are those who are very sensitive and sophisticated enough to tell us secrets of the world with their own language as an alchemist. Yunseob Kim shows us afterimages of an unknown world that could be both his reality and an illusion that Rimbaud might have seen. In an illusion of kissing a demon and being poisoned he becomes someone else who watches himself getting hallucinated without knowing what reality is and who the person that he sees is. ● 'The Hell', an exhibition organized by Art space Purl, is about images of an artist, Yunseob Kim who meets with Rimbaud in an imaginative space and sees himself living in the present with Rimbaud's own eyes. Encountering Rimbaud while living in exile, he tries to describe that the sweetest moments of his life could be scenes of a hell by representing unknown images on the Internet and reflecting what he realized in images made by photographers whose photos are often used in book covers of famous magazines. He was impressed by a movie, 'Total eclipse', which is based on Rimbaud's self biography and started making images of the gates of hell and those of a seer who, according to Rimbaud, has to experience everything to be able to foresee the future. ● He explains that the exhibition, 'The Hell' is to try to go back to the time when Rimbaud lived and become Rimbaud to see himself in the present with Rimbaud's gazes so that he can think of the meaning of his life more clearly, not just to try to repeat as Rimbaud did in his lifetime. He made artworks of three-dimensional collages and abstract images of the hyperplane, which is what he names as his work of art and explains about the process of making his work that is composed with numerous divided shades even though each shade looks different from one another. ● Since settling down in Itaewon after coming back from artists' residence programs he has started getting accustomed to a new style of life, in which he feels that an illusion is related to reality that looks exactly like an illusion and realizes the more realistic life compared to those in artist residence programs. In a place where he works as an artist and manages his reality he shows us the huge burden of his life through his work of art. ● As Rimbaud considered a time that he spent in hell both the most difficult and the happiest he says that his life that is in between an illusion and a real world might have been similar to Rimbaud's. I think that the hell that Yunseob Kim sees is in here, our reality where we place our feet in, not where we experience bad things, feeling painful, and imagine heaven that is the opposite place to the hell that we face. ● The exhibition, 'The Hell' will be organized with his works of three-dimensional collages, those abstract images made of the shreds of his collages, 143 drawings done with a pen (he spends about 4~5 hours on completing only one piece of drawing), and a piece of an oil painting. ■ Okreal Kim
