김녕만, 그의 사진은 참 따뜻하다. 농촌 사진이든 서울 달동네 사진이든 심지어 냉기가 흐르는 판문점 사진에서조차 소재를 불문하고 그의 해학적인 시선이 드러난다. 한국인의 대표적 정서로 일컬어지는 한(恨)을 해학으로 풀어냈다는 점이 김녕만이 다른 사진가와 차별되는 가장 큰 특징이다.

김녕만은 작가의 고향인 남도 특유의 정서를 바탕으로 해학적인 시각을 일관되게 보여준다. 그는 칠십 년대 변모해가던 농촌을 기록하기 시작한 후 동아일보 사진기자로서 광주 민주화 운동과 판문점, 청와대 등 한국 현대사의 현장을 지켜보고 기록해 왔다. 최루탄과 돌멩이가 범벅이 된 민주화를 요구하는 시위현장이든, 모든 것을 굳어버리게 만드는 최고 권위자 앞에서든, 또는 남북분단의 현장에서든, 그는 인간적인 따뜻한 시선을 잃지 않는다. 고된 현실 속에서도 한 순간의 여유를 포착하는 그의 긍정적인 시선은 웃음과 눈물을 자아내는 판소리 한 마당을 보는 듯 하다. 타고난 해학적인 기질이 작가의 따뜻하고 소박한 심성과 맞물리면서 김녕만 사진의 정체성을 확연하게 보여준다. ● 『김녕만, 해학을 공유하다』는 작가의 40년 작업 가운데 해학적인 사진을 선별했다. 그리고 작가가 소장한 권혁재, 김기찬, 김호성, 양종훈, 이갑철, 이형록, 최광호, 황규태 작가의 해학적인 작품을 함께 전시함으로써 감상하는 즐거움을 배가했다. 여럿이 함께 웃는 웃음소리가 즐겁지 아니한가. ■ 아트스페이스 J

Nyung-man Kim, his photography is quite warm-hearted. Every piece of his work, whether taking poor hillside area of Seoul or rural communities, and even capturing the Joint Security Area of Panmunjeom full of palpable chilliness, reveals the artist's particular humorous point of view. The most distinguished character of Nyung-man Kim's work compared to other contemporary artists is that he has expressed unique Korean deep resentment and sorrow very humorously with his typical warm-hearted eyes. ● He has kept continuously his own witty artistic sight in these works based on typical sentiment of Korean southern region where he had been born and grown up since 1970s. Starting from taking several pictures of 1970s' rural landscapes industrialized rapidly, as a photo journalist of the Dong-A daily news, he has noted the most important in the modern history of Korea such as Gwangju Democratization Movement or the North-South Korean summit at Panmunjeom. Whether at the demonstration for political democratization where tear gas and riot control gear are mingled in crowds or on national public events where several political authorities are attending such as the Inter-Korean negotiations or world high-level talks, Nyung-man Kim just only has been sticking his affectionate personal eyes towards dynamic modern history of Korea. His optical point of view capturing the moment of imperturbable composure in arduous real life seems to savor Korean traditional dramatic song called 'Pansori' laughing away human being's inherent tears. Nyung-man Kim's particular artistic identity is firmly revealed blending his innate witty tendency with warm-hearted and austere-natured personality. ● 『Nyung-man Kim, sharing affectionate eyes toward dynamic modern Korea』 are carefully organized with diverse humorous works representing Nyung-man Kim's artistic essence among huge collection of pictures for 40 years. And this show also enriched by exhibiting with several works of his fellow artists such as Hyuk-jae Kwon, Ki-chan Kim, Ho-sung Kim, Jong-hoon Yang, Gab-chul Lee, Hyung-lok Lee, Kwang-ho Choi and Kyu-tae Hwang which Nyung-man Kim has collected.
