'지리산' 연작은 여러 연작 중 사회현실을 반영한다. 바람에 흔들리며 전파되어가는 민들레 씨앗은 지리산 연작의 아이콘(icon)이다. 민들레는 바람의 도움을 받아서 근처는 물론 아주 멀리까지 그 씨앗을 퍼트린다. 민들레는 전 세계에 걸쳐 분포하며, 그 씨앗을 불며 소원이 성취되기를 비는 민간의 풍속은 세계 공통이다. 이제 나는 그 씨앗에 통일의 염원을 담아 가만히 불어본다. 언젠가 내가 다시 지리산을 다시 찾는 날, 천왕봉의 장대한 민들레 군락지에서 그 씨앗으로 하늘을 뒤덮은 장엄한 장면을 볼 수 있다면 좋겠다. ● 지리산은 남북한의 이념이 가장 첨예하게 대립되었던 역사적, 장소적 공간이다. 당시 민중의 도탄상은 말할 수 없는 지경이었으며, 지식인들은 너나 할 것 없이 그 탈출구로 사회주의 이념을 제시하기에 이른다. 삼한시대 이래 힘없는 민중이 찾아들던 지리산 자락. 지리산은 그들의 해방구이며 피난처이고 이상향이었다. 이제는 머나먼 기억의 공간, 그 기억 속으로 핏빛 얼룩이 잦아지듯이 아련한 향수에 젖어 본다. 그들의 신념은 무엇인지, 무엇이 그들을 죽음으로 내몰았는지. 지리산은 영혼의 끝자락이 희미하게 연결 되어있는 내 마음의 피난처이며 안식처이다. 풀뿌리 하나 돌멩이 하나도 예사롭지 않은 신념의 결정체. 그들의 영혼이 아른 거리며 무어라 말을 건다.

지리산은 이제 신념의 이상향이 되어 기억의 정원으로 작동한다. 아련한 추억 속의 기억들을 부유하게하고, 그것들을 연민에 가득 찬 시선으로 바라보게 한다. 또, 매개자인 한 마리의 나비가 되어 어두움에서 밝음으로 인도하기도 한다. 도대체 이념이, 신념이 무엇이기에 꽃잎처럼 지리산에 빨간 피를 뿌린 것 일까. 그들의 열정과 신념은 어디에서 비롯된 것일까. 지리산은 그들의 투쟁을 기억하고 있을까. 그들의 신념은 어두움에서 밝음으로 이끄는 메신저인 나비가 되어 훨훨 날아오른다. 그 나비는 분단의 상징인 철조망에 살포시 내려앉기도 하고, 소망․염원의 상징이기도 한 민들레 씨앗을 날려 보내기도 한다. 때론 기억의 공간이 되어 그들의 투쟁과 신념을 갈무리하여 산화공덕의 헌사를 바치기도 한다. ● 기억이 가치판단의 결과물은 아니겠지만 언제까지나 간직하고자 하는 잔상은 분명 존재한다고 본다. 기억의 공간은 향수(Nostalghia)라는 이름으로 애잔함을 채우지만, 이를 연민으로 바라보는 한 사람의 뒷모습이 없다면 얼마나 허허로울까. 지리산이 기억하는 무엇, 두근거림, 속삭임... 나는 오늘도 꽃잎이 휘날리는 천왕봉 모퉁이에서 그들이 절망 속에서 내려다보았을 산하(山河)를 본다. ■ 공기평

The 'Mountain Jiri' Series depict social reality the most among my series works. Mountain Jiri was the historical place where the North and South Korea conflicted most acutely with each other forideological issues. The situation of common people was in extreme distressand a number of the intellectual were inclined to socialism for a breakthrough. ● Throughout the long history of Korea, Mountain Jiri has meant a huge destination to powerless people looking for a refuge, a haven, oran ideal spot. I'm pondering on the long trace of its heritage, wondering what their main ideas were and why they couldn't help facing death in the end. Mountain Jiri feels like it is also linked to me in a spiritual way. The mountain can be said to be the crystal of people's firm belief, where a little leaf or a pebble are very dear to me. ● Mountain Jire now became a metaphor of idealistic ideology compared to a garden of remembrance. You can feel deep sympathy from the memories. A butterfly as a messenger leads onlookers from depression to salvation. I wonder how strong an ideology could bring death to so many people in the mountain. What made them hold such a fierce passion and conviction?In the mountain Jiri are their struggles still remembered? Their philosophyblows a butterfly messenger turning darkness into brightness. The butterfly sits on the wire fence, the symbol of the territorial division, or flies together with dandelion spores, the metaphor of our nation's aspiration. Sometimes the butterfly pays a tribute to their sacrifice and deeds. ● Remembrance doesn't result from any valuation but does exist in our mind for whatever reason. It can be called Nostalgia. It should be relieved a little by an image of a person's back, full of compassion. There are memorable moments, heart-pounding, and whispers hovering in the mountain Jiri. I'm now looking down the world from a valley of the flowery mountain, where my predecessors did so in despair. ■ KONGKIPYUNG
