Are you Still Dreaming?-바쁜 일상 속 그리움과 외로움에 지친 삶, 갈망하는 理想 ● 바쁘게 어디론가 이동하는 도시인들. 똑같은 옷을 입고 똑같은 걸음걸이로 –틀에 박힌- 회색 도시를 살아가는 존재. 시계바늘처럼 일정한 방향과 속도로 조금씩 움직이며 이미 결정 된 계획처럼 삶을 사는 우리의 모습이다. 우리는 항상 외롭다. 항상 기댈 곳을 찾고 원치 않는 삶에서 벗어나고 싶은 것이 본능이라 할 만큼 누구나 공감할 문제이다. 과거보다 타인 과 소통할 기회는 많아졌지만 모두가 추구하는 이상적인 진정한 소통이란 과연 존재하는 것 인가. 외로움을 호소하는 사람들은 여유를 잃어가고 점점 날카로워진다. 자기보호를 위해 가시를 곧추세운 선인장에서 스스로를 가둔 채 현실을 경계하며 살아가는 우리의 모습을 찾 아볼 수 있다.

익숙한 공간, 익숙한 상황에 놓인 선인장의 모습에서 현대인의 삶과 근원적인 외로움을 표 현하고 우리가 추구하는 이상을 보여주고자 하는 장유정 작가는 『2014년 안아주세요』에 서 이전 시리즈와는 달리 이상에 가까운 ―적극적으로 이상을 찾아나서는― 선인장의 모습이 그려진다. 「2010년 나는 지금 어디에」에서 현실의 괴리에 갇혀 이상을 보지 못한 채 고개 숙인 선인장이 현대인의 각박한 삶을 그대로 묘사했다면 「2012년 Paradise of Loneliness」는 그리움은 남아있지만 다소 이상을 꿈꾸기 시작, 주어진 현실에서 벗어나고 자 하는 의지를 표출하며 그들의 억압된 감정을 대변하기 시작한다. 이전 시리즈에서 희망 의 메시지를 보였다면 『2014년 안아주세요』시리즈는 이전의 소극적인 -현실 타협적인- 자세에서 보다 과감하고 적극적인 제스처를 보이며 이상을 향한 세상과의 소통의지를 보여 주고 있다.

"어두운 방 안에 갇힌 채 창 밖을 바라보는 선인장의 모습은 외로움과 그리움에 지친 현대 인들, 하지만 꿈을 꾸고 소통하고자 갈망하는 우리의 모습과 닮아 있다". 작가는 작품 속 이상을 꿈꾸며 동경하는 선인장의 모습에서 위안을 얻고, 주어진 현실에 안주하지 않고 새 로운 희망을 찾길 바라고 있다. 나 홀로 창 밖을 바라보거나 저 멀리 닿을 수 없는 곳을 바 라보던 선인장은 어느 샌가 서로를 바라보며 조심스레 교감하고 소통하는 모습으로 따뜻하 며 차분하게 변화해간다. 한 작품에서 풋내기 연인처럼 수줍은 모습으로 서로를 바라보는가 하면, 어떤 작품에서는 당장이라도 뛰쳐나갈 듯 과감하게 꼭 끌어안는 장면도 그려지고 있 다. 이는 아직 이루어지지 않은 비현실 혹 순간의 상상일지라도 잠시나마 스스로의 위안이 나 행복감을 느낄 수 있으리라는 작가의 생각이 잘 드러나 있다.

현실이 이상을 동경하고, 이상에 근접하는 순간 그것은 더 이상 이상이 아닌 현실이 된다. 그리곤 또 다른 이상에 도달하기 위해 하루하루를 버텨내는 것이 우리 현대인이다. 반복되 는 일상과 소통의 부재가 가져오는 답답함, 무미건조한 현대인의 하루에 잠시나마 취할 수 있는 휴식, 기대어 쉴 수 있는 누군가가 있다는 것 자체만으로 이상적인 삶이 아닐까.『안아주세요』라는 말처럼 조금은 직접적이고 적극적인 모습으로 이상을 찾아간다면 불편한 일상에서 보다 나은 현실을 마주하지 않을까 생각해본다. ■ 양자윤

Are you Still Dreaming? Longing for ideals in busy life and tired of loneliness daily routines and activities. Walking into the gray concrete city and looking similar figures. This is how people live in modern life like a clockwork moving fixed direction and speed. ● People are lonely. They always look for someone to depend on and try to escape from something we don't want. They live in modern life with various communication route but still don't get comfort and peace through called real communication. Actually people who complain loneliness will lose peace of mind and become sharp. It could be compared to the cactus covered by many sharp thorns to protect themselves. ● Artist You-jung Jang expresses modern people's life and their loneliness to show up the pursuit of ideal through cactus paint in familiar space and situation. Her first art work 「2010, where am I」 was described harsh life of modern people who can never persue ideal and her second work 「2012, Paradise of Loneliness」 was expressed a dream of utopia(ideal) by two symbols (city and cactus) which do not appear to go together in same screen. Now her third work 『2014, Hug me』is presenting a little different to approach a ideal. If previous two series were showed a message of hope passively (conservative-realistic compromise), third work 『2014, Hug me』 is describing a ideal as a way of communication to the world by more aggressive and active. ● "The cactus which stares out of the window from the dark room is representing the modern people whom are tired to loneliness and struggle to communicate in mind with someone". Artist You-jung Jang believes people to get comfort and happy by looking at her paint of cactus never being complacent in given life. Her previous paints were described a cactus looked out of the window far away alone without someone to communicate but in 『2014 Hug me』 shows cactus are slightly seeing each other and starting communicate to become warm and clam. One of her paint shows a cactus as a shy lovers and the other paint presents passionate love with tight hugging cactus. It reflects artist's thought of unrealistic or imagine not happened yet but could be occurred in near future. ● There is always a gab between reality and ideals and reality is often contradictory to the ideal. We endure difficulties everyday to attain the ideal has been realized. However, if we take a rest a moment in our busy days, it could be already realized an ideal. ● 『Hug me』 is actually very active and direct way of expression. I believe we can find much better life when we actively pursue our own ideals like a word of 『Hug me』. ■
