공예지 작가의『Appeal』展이 2014년 4월 15일(화) ~ 5월 19일까지 용산 Art space LOO에서 열린다. 회화 같기도 하고 컴퓨터 그래픽 같기도 한 작품들을 통해 근원적인 에너지와 여러 시간과 공간대가 공존함을 느낄 수 있다. 작가는 종이와 조명을 이용하여 공간을 구성한 뒤, 그곳에서 나타나는 색 면과 빛의 작용을 담아, 의식적인 차원이든 무의식적인 차원이든 물리적인 차원이든 모든 차원이 활발하게 활성화 되어있다. ■ 아트스페이스 루

형이상학적 비전과 물리적인 인식 사이의 불안정함 속에서 ● 빛이 발(發)하는 순간을 포착한 것 같은 공예지 작의 작업은 회화, 사진, 도안의 경계를 넘나들며 시각적 형상(形象)에 대한 본질적인 탐구를 함축하고 있다. ● 작가는 종이와 조명을 이용하여 공간을 구성한 뒤, 그곳에서 나타나는 색 면과 빛의 작용을 담은「paper composition」시리즈를 선보인다. 그렇게 재단된 화면은 보는 이로 하여금 극도로 은유적인 공간을 마주하게 하는데, 작가는 그것을 관객과 자신만의 소통 법이라 말한다. 작품이 그러한 소통의 매개체 역할을 하는 것이다. 21세기 테크놀로지의 발달은 그녀의 작업에 있어 제작 형식뿐 아니라 작품 속 공간과 실제의 공간까지 전복시킨다. 그것은 확장된 개념의 새로운 사진 언어를 탐구하는 또 다른 내러티브가 된다. ● 작가는 디지털 프린트(digital print)를 이용하여 현실과 상상이 결합된 미묘한 분위기의 공간을 만드는데, 감각의 표현 역시 이러한 표출과의 관계 속에서 의미를 가지게 된다. 그녀는 자신 속에 있는 비정형의 감각을 '정의되지 않는 무언가'로 만들어 화면 너머에 던져놓는다. 감각적이고 에너지 넘치는 공예지 작가의 작품은 이미 그 자체로 재료와 매체, 주제에 있어 탈(脫) 경계와 다양성의 공존, 소통을 추구하고 있다. ■

백과사전에는 수만 가지의 단어가 있지만, 사실 우리가 살아가면서 쓰는 단어는 몇 가지 되지 않는다. 대부분 고만고만한 단어를 어떻게 조합하느냐에 따라 미묘한 의미의 차이를 만들어 내기 때문이다. 홍수처럼 쏟아지는 매체 속 이미지들은 밀물과 썰물이 빠져나가듯 머릿속을 범람하기에, 그 속에서 새로움을 발견하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다. ● 나의 언어는 이러한 이미지 속의 섬세하고 미묘한 차이와 관계성을 발견하는 것이다. 이와 같은 과정들은 '보이지 않는 것'에서 '보이는 것'이 가능해짐을 말하고 있다. ● 회화 같기도 하고 컴퓨터 그래픽 같기도 한 까닭에 이따금씩 작품을 보고 궁금증을 갖는 사람들이 있다. 하지만 곧 그것이 종이로 구성된 공간을 촬영한 것임을 알고는 굉장히 흥미로워한다. 나는 이렇게 내가 의도한 트릭이 드러나는 순간에 재미를 느낀다. 이러한 이중적인 관계야말로 일상에서 쉽게 찾을 수 없는, 심미적인 비밀이 폭로되는 순간이다. ■ 공예지

In the instability between metaphysical vision and physical recognition ● Her works, which are like capturing moments of bursting light, imply a fundamental exploration of visual forms that cross the boundaries of painting, photography, and design. ● The artist constructs a space using paper and light, and directs us to the effects produced by color fields and lighting. In this way the constructed picture allows viewers to encounter a metaphorical space. The artist refers to this as her own way of communication. The work functions as a medium for this kind of communion. The development of technology in the 21st century transforms not only the forms of production but also the spaces presented by works and even real spaces. This becomes a different narrative that explores a new photographic language of the expanded field. ● Using digital printing the artist creates a space with subtle textures that combine reality and imagination. Furthermore, the expression of her sensibility accrues meaning in relation to this form of production. She transforms her idiosyncratic interior into an 'undefined something' and throws it over a picture plane. The sensuous and energetic work of Yea-ji Gong already seeks the coexistence and communication of diversity and trans-boundaries of material, medium, and subject matter. ■
