국립현대미술관 서울은 2014년 첫 번째 기획전으로 4월 1일부터 7월 13일까지『쉬린 네샤트』展을 개최한다. 이 전시는 아시아 근현대미술을 주도하는 특별 프로젝트인 국립현대미술관 아시아 프로젝트 'M.A.P(MMCA_ASIA PROJECT)'의 첫 전시이다. 『쉬린 네샤트』展은 국립현대미술관에 2014년 처음 선보이는 기획전으로 아시아나 항공의 후원으로 개최된다. 뉴욕에서 생활하는 이란계 미술가 겸 영화제작자인 쉬린 네샤트의 회고전으로서 한국에서 최초로 그녀의 작품 세계를 폭넓게 체험할 수 있는 기획이며, 지난 20년간의 활동을 한 눈에 볼 수 있는 특별한 기회이다. 이 전시는 초기 작품인「알라의 여인」과 사진 설치「왕서」(2012) 등의 사진 연작을 비롯하여 유명한 흑백 비디오 3부작「격동 Turbulent」(1998),「황홀 Rapture」(1999),「열정 Fervor」(2000), 그리고「여자들만의 세상」(Women without Men」(2004-2008)에서 나온 세 개의 비디오 설치 작품 등으로 구성되었다.

네샤트가 다양한 매체를 통한 작품으로 널리 알려져왔음에도 불구하고, 그녀의 작품은 작품 전체는 함께 전시된 사례는 많지 않았다. 네샤트의 작품을 사진과 비디오 속으로 들어가면서, 이 전시는 관객들이 예술가의 열정적인 활동을 전체적으로 바라볼 수 있는 소중한 기회를 선사해줄 것이다. 시각적 은유와 강렬한 사운드를 통해, 네샤트는 이슬람 전통의 심오함과 개인과 자유에 대한 서구적 개념을 주제를 포괄하는 자신의 관점을 표현하기 위해서 복잡한 정체성, 젠더, 권력이라는 소재를 다뤄왔다. 쉬린 네샤트의 작품을 이란 출신의 망명중인 예술가라는 자신의 개인적 체험으로부터 깊은 영향을 받았다. 그녀의 작품은 이슬람 문화에서 정치적 사회적 조건, 특히 젠더와 권력의 문제, 전치와 패러독스라는 점에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 다양한 미디어를 통해 표현된 네샤트의 작품은 기억, 순교, 혁명과 사회적 변화라는 보편적 주제에 대한 시적, 미학적 명상과 같다. 작가가 말했듯이 "한 사람의 여성으로서, 한 사람의 이란인으로서, 한 사람의 예술가로서 마주하는 이슈들 사이를 항해하는 것, 그것이 내 작업의 본령이다. 그리고 그 이슈는 나라는 인간보다 훨씬 거대하다." ● 국립현대미술관의 전시는 개인의 역사로부터 출발하여, 정체성, 정의와 휴머니티라는 보편적 주제를 향해 나아가는 대항해이자 그녀의 예술 세계로 초대하는 특별한 기회가 될 것이다.

이란 출신의 예술가 겸 영화감독인 쉬린 네샤트는 디트로이트 미술관, 베를린 함부르크 반호프, 몬트리얼 현대미술관, 런던 서펜타인 갤러리, 암스테르담 스테델릭 미술관, 미네아폴리스 워커아트센터 등 세계 각지의 미술관 및 갤러리에서 개인전을 개최한 바 있으며, 베니스 비엔날레 황금사자상(1999), 히로시마 평화상(2005), 도로시 앤 릴리안 기쉬 상(2006), 다보스 세계 경제 포럼 수정상(2014) 등을 수상했다. 2009년에는 최초의 장편영화『여자들만의 세상』으로 베니스국제영화제 최우수 감독상 부분에서 은사자상을 수상했다. ■ 국립현대미술관

MMCA, Seoul holds its first exhibition of 2014, Shirin Neshat, from April 1 to July 13, as part of the MMCA Asia Project (M. A. P.), a project aimed at placing MMCA at the forefront of promoting international modern and contemporary art in Asia. Shirin Neshat is the first exhibition of 2014 organized by MMCA, Seoul under the sponsorship of Kumho Asiana. This mid-career retrospective of Shirin Neshat (b. 1957), a renowned Iranian artist and filmmaker who lives and works in New York, is the first extensive exhibition of her work mounted in Korea, and presents an overview of the artist's practice over the last twenty years. The exhibition includes two series of photographs-- the early series Women of Allah (1993-1997) and the photographic installation The Book of Kings (2012)—and several video installations, including the famous black-and-white video trilogy comprising Turbulent (1998), Rapture (1999) and Fervor (2000), and three video installations from the project Women without Men (2004-2008). ● Though Neshat is widely acclaimed for her work in various media, her collected oeuvre is rarely considered as a singular production or displayed together. Exploring Neshat's work in photography and video, this exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience an overview of the artist's passionate practice. Through visual metaphor and compelling sound, Neshat confronts the complexities of identity, gender and power to express her own vision that embraces the depth of Islamic tradition and Western concepts of individuality and liberty. Shirin Neshat's work is deeply rooted in her experience as an artist in exile and her Iranian roots. Her work explores the political and social conditions of Iranian and Muslim culture, particularly focusing on gender and questions of power, displacement and paradox. Neshat's work in various media reveals poetic and aesthetically charged meditations on the universal themes of memory, martyrdom, revolution and social change. As the artist has stated: "My work is always navigating between issues that I face as one woman, one Iranian, one artist – and issues that are far larger than me." (Alternate artist quote: "My art has stemmed from a desire to bridge deeply personal issues with critical social, political and historical issues that concern the worlds I inhabit. Whether through the medium of photography, video installations or feature films, all of my work tends to investigate various dichotomies, including masculine and feminine; mystical and political; poetry and violence; and finally, ersonal angst with social crisis.") The exhibition at MMCA offers a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in Neshat's world, which is a great voyage, starting from her personal history and building towards universal themes of identity, justice and humanity. ● Iranian-born artist and filmmaker Shirin Neshat has had numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums worldwide, including: the Detroit Institute of Arts; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal; the Serpentine Gallery, London; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Neshat is the recipient of various awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (1999), the Hiroshima Freedom Prize (2005), the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize (2006), and the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum, Davos (2014). In 2009, Neshat directed her first feature-length film, Women Without Men, which received the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice International Film Festival. ■ MMCA
