공간이 된 회화, 회화가 된 공간

nook gallery는 삼청동 북촌마을에 위치한 전시공간입니다. 규칙과 틀에 얽매이지 않는 유연함 속에서 현대 미술의 여러 장르를 아우르는 전시를 만들어 갑니다. 성격이 다르면서도 공감대를 가질 수 있는 평면작품과 입체작품이 한 공간에서 만나는 2인 전시를 통해 서로 다른 이미지가 상생할 수 있는 실험적인 전시를 기획합니다. 일 년에 한 두 번은 꾸준히 작업을 해왔으나 전시 기회가 상대적으로 적은 역량 있는 작가를 위한 후원전시를 가집니다. 작가가 전시를 만드는 것이 아니라 관람자가 작품 속에서 자신의 이야기를 풀어갈 수 있는 전시공간을 만들어 가려 합니다. ■ 누크갤러리

우리는 자신을 둘러싸고 있는 공간에서 무심히 살아간다. 일상의 집이나 일하는 공간, 건물들, 눈앞에 보이는 산과 강 그리고 하늘과 바다. 항상 그 자리에 존재하는 대상이라 의미를 두지 않고 지나치곤 한다. 정보영 정승운 작가는 오랜 시간 공간을 바라보며 그 곳에 담겨있는 의미와 관계에 대해 사유하며 작업을 해오고 있다. 그들은 공간과 무언의 대화를 하고 있다. 두 작가에게 공간의 의미는 무엇일까? 어떠한 시각으로 바라보고 어떻게 느끼며 어떤 방법으로 표현하고 있을까?

정보영의 작품을 보면 지극히 어두운 공간을 지나 어느덧 밝은 빛이 이끄는 곳으로 시선을 따라가게 된다. 도대체 이 공간은 어떤 곳일까? 그 속에는 무엇이 존재하는가? 의문을 가지며 화면 너머를 살피게 된다. 작가가 진지하게 재현해낸 비어있지만 꽉 찬 공간에서 신비로운 기운마저 느끼게 된다. 그 곳에서 흐르는 시간을 감지하고 대기의 흔들림을 느낀다. 또한 지나온 흔적들이 남아있는 공간은 관람자를 끌어들인다. 이번 전시에서 보여주는 작업들은 빛의 형태에 관심을 두어 수평인 바닥에 길게 떨어지는 빛을 재현한다. 수직의 벽과 수평의 바닥이 갖는 함축적인 의미를 생각해 보게 한다. 이전에도 시도한 바 있는 바닥과 천정에 떨어지는 조명등 빛을 포착하여 마치 물속에 잠긴 듯한 이미지를 묘사한다. 이를 좌우 대칭으로 반전시켜 초현실적인 공간을 구축해 본다. 어둠 속에서 비어있음을 암시하는 빈 의자가 전등의 빛을 받아 그림자를 길게 늘이며 공간과의 대화를 한다. 눈에 보이지 않는 움직임을 담아내기 위해 작가는 공간의 흔적을 찾아 나간다.

얼핏 보면 자유롭지만 자신만의 틀을 가지고 치밀하게 작업하는 정승운, 그는 공간을 규정하는 모서리에 개입하여 그 곳을 배경으로 공제선을 그린다. 어디서나 보는 앞산과 뒷산을 가장 친근한 소재인 나무를 사용해 새로운 공간회화를 창조해 낸다. 주변 환경과의 소통에서 자신의 존재를 확인하는 그는 주변의 환경이 변하면 그 것과 소통하는 나의 존재성에 대한 변화가 수반되며 모든 것은 스스로 변한다고 본다. 그는 네가티브 이미지, 즉 하늘을 표현함으로써 산을 암시하던 작업에서 최근 포지티브 이미지인 산을 표현하게 됨으로써 좀 더 표현의 자유로움을 경험하게 된다. 회화로의 관심이 더해가는 작가는 공제선 설치에 색을 입혀 회화의 영역을 넓혀가려 한다. 크고 작은 모서리의 설치물들은 마치 마주하는 산들이 서로 이야기 하듯이 메아리를 주고받는다.

정보영 정승운 두 작가는 주어진 공간에 새로운 속성을 부여하고 자신의 방법으로 그림을 그린다. 서로 반대편에서 공간을 바라보고 해석하여 다르게 접근하는 그들의 상이한 언어를 통해 새로운 대화를 들어본다. 공간은 회화가 되어 다가오고 회화는 공간이 되어 이야기를 걸어온다. ■ 조정란

Painting Becomes Space, Space Becomes Painting ● We live casually in the space surrounding us. The homes we live in every day, the spaces we work in, buildings, the mountains, rivers, sky and sea before our eyes... Since they are objects that have always been there, we take them for granted, without giving them any particular meaning. Artists Joung Boyoung and Chung Seung-un have contemplated on the significance and relations of space for a long time, and have worked with this theme. They are engaged in a silent conversation with space. What is the meaning of space to these two artists? How do they see it, what do they feel, and what methods do they use to express? ● When we look at Joung Boyoung's work, our eyes are led from an extremely dark space to a place illuminated by bright light. What is the nature of this space? What exists within? With these questions in mind, we go on to examine beyond the picture-plane. In the empty but completely filled space, which was enthusiastically represented by the artist, we experience an almost mysterious feeling. There we sense the flowing time and feel the vibrating atmosphere. Moreover, the space with remaining traces of the past draws spectators in. The works in this exhibition take an interest in the shape of light, and represent light that falls on a long horizontal surface. This enables viewers to think about the implications of the vertical wall and horizontal floor. By capturing light shining on the floor and ceiling, as seen in her previous works as well, the artist depicts images as if they were submerged in water. And by symmetrically reversing the images, she constructs a surreal space. An empty chair in the darkness, suggesting vacuity, seems to be in a conversation with the space, as it casts its long shadow, away from the light source. In order to capture invisible movement, the artist searches for traces of space. ● Chung Seung-un, who is free-spirited at first glance, but in fact loyal to his own meticulous framework, intervenes with the edges that define space, and draws skylines against the background. By using one of the most familiar subject matter―wood―he creates a new type of spatial painting of the commonly seen mountains. The artist, who confirms his existence through communication with his surrounding environment, believes that if the environment changes, this causes his status of existence to change, and that everything changes on its own. Recently he has experienced further freedom of expression, as he made a transition from the negative image, which suggested mountains by expressing the sky, to the positive image of the mountains. With an increasing interest in painting, the artist added color to his "skyline" installations in an attempt to broaden the domain of painting. The installations with large and small edges echo with one another, as if mountains were talking to each other. ● Artists Joung Boyoung and Chung Seung-un give new attributes to given space, and paint in their own unique ways. We will be able to listen to a new conversation spoken in different languages, as the artists observe space from opposite angles, and interpret and approach it differently. Now space approaches us in the form of painting, and painting talks to us as a part of space. ■ CHOJUNGRAN
