갤러리 소소는 은 2014년 3월 20일부터 3월 30일까지 『SoSo Residency 14 입주작가』展을 개최합니다. SoSo Residency 14는 8주기간 동안 해외작가를 초청하여 작업공간, 숙소, 전시, 출판물 제작, 항공료, 체제비 등을 지원하여 창작활동에 전념 할 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다. 입주작가는 공모를 통해 선정되었으며 2014년 2월 입주하여 작품활동을 하고 있습니다. 이번 전시에서 2달간의 입주 성과를 선보입니다. Adam Magyar는 헝가리 출생으로 독일을 기반으로 활동하는 사진 및 영상 작가입니다. 이번 전시에서는 그의 연작 Stainless 비디오 작품을 선보입니다. 고속 카메라를 이용 하는 그의 작업은 삶의 순간의 중요성을 언급하며, 시간과 사유의 공감을 불러 일으킵니다. Il-Jin Atem Choi는 독일에서 태어난 재독 2세로 주로 타이포그라피, 그라티피 장르 위주로 작품활동을 해왔습니다. 이번 전시에서는 특정 이름과 단어의 상관관계로 개인의 정체성에 대한 고민과 언어적 모호함에 대한 담론을 이끌어냅니다. ■

「Stainless」 video series ● 나는 몇 년 동안 이동하는 지하철을 피사체로 사진 폭에 담아왔고, 연작 제목을 '스텐레스(Stainless)'로 붙였다. 내가 처음으로 작업을 시작한 뉴욕에서 달리는 지하철의 차체에서 제목을 가져 왔다. 스텐레스 스틸은 부패하거나, 녹이 슬거나, 얼룩이 지지도 않는다고들 한다. 그러나 내 영상 작업에 등장하는 한결같이 아름답고 순수한 사람들과는 달리, 스텐레스 스틸은 실제로 얼룩이 무결점이라고 할 수는 없을 것이다. 나는 현 시대에서 우리가 사용하는 다양한 기기에 열광하는 사람이다. 종종 산업용으로 제작된 첨단 도구를 예술적 용도로 변환하고 인간적 맥락으로 접근한다. 특히 기계로만 관찰할 수 있는 극미한 디테일을 모티브로 작업하는 것에 큰 매력을 느낀다. '스텐레스 스틸' 비디오 작업에서는 산업용 고속 비디오 카메라를 사용한다. 이와 같은 기기는 연구용이나 충돌 시험용으로 연구실이나 산업용으로 사용된다. 초당 천 개의 프레임을 포착하는 작업은 스틸 사진과 영화의 경계를 넘나들며 새로운 시간 차원(time dimension)을 드러내며 새로운 인식으로 이어진다. 나는 전 세계 여러 도시의 지하철을 타며, 지하철이 역에 도달하는 시점에 승강장을 카메라에 담았다. 이 때 실제 지하철이 승강장에 도착하는 시간은 12초에 불과하지만, 비디오 영상에서는 이 장면이 거의 12분 동안 표현된다. 촬영한 영상물의 처리작업에서 일련의 수많은 '살아 있는 조각품'이 눈에 들어 온다. 또한 단순하기 그지 없는 장면과 평범하기 그지 없는 상황 속에 내재한 미적 요소를 표현한다. 느린 속도에서 연출되는 이 모든 마술 같은 장면들은 처음부터 나의 마음을 사로잡기에 충분했다. ■ Adam Magyar

NATURAL BORN ILJIN ● '타고난 일진'을 뜻하는 「NATURAL BORN ILJIN」 전시는 개인의 정체성과 언어적 모호함에 관한 담론에 접근한다. 벽에 그린 드로잉과 종이에 작업한 타이포그래피가 어우러져 작가가 직접 자신의 손을 사용하여 창조하는 예술 작업의 중요성을 전달한다. '일진'을 구글에 검색해 보면 일진에 관한 사례와 이야기가 등장하는데, 이 중 한 이야기로 전시회 오프닝 퍼포먼스의 문을 연다. 나는 열 여섯 살 때부터 내 머리를 스스로 잘랐다. 그 전까지는 아버지가 다니시던 미장원에서 머리를 잘랐다. 콧수염이 보기 좋은 친절한 이탈리아 남자 미용사가 아직도 내 뇌리에 남아 있다. 그런데 미장원에 앉아서 내가 원하는 헤어스타일을 설명하고 있노라면 어느 순간 어색함이 몰려왔고, 그 다음부터는 더 이상 미장원에 가지 않고 내가 직접 해결하고자 마음 먹었다. 당시 나는 독일의 고등학교에 재학 중이어서 한국 고등학교의 무시무시한 날라리 혹은 사고뭉치를 뜻하는 '일진'이라는 용어를 전혀 알지 못하는 상황이었다. 구글에서 한글 대신 영어 알파벳으로 '일진(ILJIN)'을 소리 나는 대로 쳐 보면 그다지 흥미로운 기사나 링크가 많지 않지만, 한국의 인기 많은 걸그룹 '시스타'의 멤버이자 일진설로 곤혹을 치렸던 '소유'에 대한 영어 블로그를 한 곳 발견했다. 이 블로그에서는 '소유'가 어느 인터뷰에서 미용사 자격증이 있다고 얘기한 것이 일진설을 촉발 시켰다고 했다. 미용사 자격증은 일진 친구들이 구직활동을 하다 최후의 보루로 선택하는 일자리인 것이다. 특히 일진들은 불량스러운 행동으로 고등학교를 중퇴하는 경우가 빈번하다. '일진'이라는 단어가 내 이름 옆에 나란히 있다니, 낯설기 그지 없다. 사실 나는 고등학교 시절 누군가를 왕따 시킨 적도, 누군가와 싸우거나, 사고를 친 적도 없는 그 반대의 부류에 속했다. 이제 성인이 되어 일진의 의미를 곱씹으니, 단지 미용사 자격증을 갖고 있다는 이유로 '소유'라는 친구가 여론의 뭇매를 맞고 있다는 이 현상이 어찌 보면 '일진' 현상을 적나라하게 반영하는 것이 아닌가라고 생각해 본다. ■ Il-Jin Atem Choi

「Stainless」 video series ● I've been working on photographing moving subway trains for a few years and entitled the series 'Stainless'. The title comes from the body of the trains in New York where I started my work. Stainless steel does not corrode, rust or stain. In my images I always try to depict people as beautiful and pure. Stainless steel however is said to be not fully stain-proof. ● Passionate about the devices our modern era provides I often grab sophisticated tools made for industrial purposes, convert them for art use and put them into a human context. I especially love to work with the incredible amount of details that only a machine eye can see. ● For the Stainless videos I use an industrial high-speed video camera. These devices are used in laboratories and various industries for researches or crash-tests. Capturing a thousand frames per second is on the borderline of still photography and motion picture revealing a new time dimension and resulting in new perceptions. I boarded subway trains in several cities around the world and captured the platform as the train arrived to the station. It all happens in 12 seconds in reality, yet replaying the footage will let us observe it for nearly 12 minutes. ● After I process the data I see an endless row of living sculptures. It reveals how much beauty lies in the simplest of scenes and the commonest of situations. This pace of time made all those magical scenes visible that have captivated me from the very beginning. ■ Adam Magyar

NATURAL BORN ILJIN ● The exhibition "NATURAL BORN ILJIN" deals with the question of personal identity and linguistic ambiguity. Handmade wall-drawings are accompanied by typographic works on paper signifying the need to produce something with the artist's own hands. A superficial Google-search reveals certain stories related to the meaning of the word ILJIN, one of which will serve as a starting point for a performance on the day of the opening. ● I started cutting my own hair when I was sixteen years old. Until then I had to go to the same hairdresser my father used to go to – I remember the hairdresser to be a friendly Italian gentleman with a nice mustache. However, the whole act of sitting there and explaining what kind of haircut should be done felt increasingly awkward to me, so that I just stopped going and started doing my own hairdressing. At that time I attended high-school in Germany and I didn't know anything about the use of the term ILJIN for bullies and troublemakers in Korean high-schools. ● There are not so many interesting articles and links on Google when searching for ILJIN using Roman letters instead of Hangeul ones. Still, I found one blog in English, in which I read about Soyou, who is a member of the apparently very popular Korean girlband Sistar, and who was accused of having been an ILJIN in high-school. According to the blog, the accusations started when Soyou herself revealed in an interview that she had a hairdressing degree, which is considered to be some sort of last resort career-choice for ILJINs, who dropped out of high-school due to their naughty behavior. ● It's a strange feeling to have my name occupied by the use of the term ILJIN, with which I don't really identify as I would have considered myself the complete opposite of a bully, a fighter, or a troublemaker during my time in high-school. Having thought about it for quite some time now, I have to admit that the story of Soyou being accused of being an ILJIN because of being a hairdresser has so far made the most sense to me with regards to coming to terms with this whole ILJIN phenomenon. ■ Il-Jin Atem Choi
