"모든 힘은 형태로 진화한다" (Shaker Mother Ann Lee) ● 『성장교본 The Growing Manual』은 각각 서울과 런던을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 작가 손혜민과 존 리어든(John Reardon)의 협업으로 2012년부터 시작되었다. 이번 전시는 '식물'을 매개로 하여 오늘날 일련의 집단들이 시대의 특정 정치적, 사회적, 경제적 과제에 따라 어떻게 조직되고, 대응하는지를 고찰하는 것을 그 목표로 한다.

두 작가는 독자적인 방식과 형태로 운영되는 전 세계의 작가 운영 공간으로부터 그들을 대표할 수 있는 '씨앗'과 집단을 나타낼 수 있는 정보를 수집해왔다. 그 결과, 흡사 작가 집단을 소개하는 안내 책자와 같은 The Growing Manual(2012)을 1차적으로 출판하였다. 이번 전시 『성장교본 The Growing Manual』은 앞서 진행된 출판물의 살아 있는 형태라 할 수 있다. 쿠바, 멕시코, 브라질, 말레이시아, 대만 등 각기 다른 생육환경 속에서 자라는 '식물'을 서울시립미술관이라는 새로운 환경과 조건에서 재배하는 실험을 동반함으로 '주어진 조건에 대응한 형태', '생존'이라는 개념적인 명제를 조금 더 구체적이고 직접적인 방법으로 접근한다.

식물드로잉 맵핑

『성장교본 The Growing Manual』의 중심적인 역할을 하는 것은 단연 '식물'이라 할 수 있으며, 전시는 '식물'을 매개로 크게 세 가지로 구성된다. 1) 식물, 2) 식물이 대표하는 각 집단에 대한 다양한 형식의 정보, 3) 식물을 매개로 한 조형적인 구조물인 작품이다. 그렇다면, 왜 식물인가? '식물'은 비유적 도구로서 특정 지역의 조건과 환경을 의미하는 동시에 주어진 환경과 조건에 적응한 형태이다. 즉, 갤러리 안에서 자라나는 11종의 식물은 주어진 환경과 조건에 적응하여 독자적인 방식과 형태로 운영되는 작가 집단을 비유하며, 식물과 함께 제시된 텍스트, 사진, 영상 등 다양한 형식의 정보들은 각 집단이 속한 지역의 특수한 정치/사회/경제적 상황을 묘사한다.

'씨앗'으로 시작되어 '식물 재배'라는 행위로 나타날 이 전시는 '식물'로 비유되는 작가 집단의 "성장"과정을 보여주는 "교본"으로 작동하며, 더 나아가 "어떻게 하면 지속적으로 자생할 수 있을까"라는 근본적인 물음을 자아 낼 수 있기를 기대한다. ■ 서울시립미술관

"Every Force Evolves a Form" (Shaker Mother Ann Lee) ● The Growing Manual was started in 2012 as a collaboration between Hyemin Son and John Reardon who are based in Seoul and London, respectively. This exhibition uses 'plants' as a medium, and aims to look at how a series of artists groups/collectives are formed according to certain political, social and economic conditions of the contemporary, and how the groups respond to these conditions. ● From the artist-run spaces across the world, the two artists have been collecting material; 'seeds' and data which could describe or represent these groups/collectives. The result was published into The Growing Manual (2012) Volume 1, a kind of directory, introducing the collected artist groups. The exhibition The Growing Manual can be called a vivid living version of the book published in 2012. The 'plants' grown in different environments such as in Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Malaysia and Taiwan, will go through an experiment in which they will be encouraged to grow in the particular environment and conditions of Seoul Museum of Art. In this way, we try to approach a conceptual proposition such as 'survival' and 'response to the given situation' in a more specific and direct method. ● The main role in The Growing Manual is definitely played by 'plants', and with these as a medium, the exhibition consists of three parts. 1) Plants, 2) A various forms of information about each group/collective that the plant represents or comes from, and 3) Art works of formative structures using plants as medium. Then, why plants? A 'Plant' is a figurative tool which signifies both a specific local condition and an adaptation to the given environment. In other words, 11 plants that grow in the gallery represent the artist groups/collectives which adapt to the given environment and conditions and are organized with their own methods and forms. A various forms of information such as texts, photographs, and video clips which are exhibited with the plants refer to the local political, social and economic situation of each groups/collectives. ● The exhibition which starts with the 'seeds' and will show 'plant growing', would work as a "manual" showing the "growth" of the artist groups being represented by 'plants'. Furthermore, one could expect to evoke a fundamental question of "how they can continue to grow naturally". ■ SEOUL MUSEUM OF ART
