별 헤는 밤 ● 다시 별 이야기를 할 때가 된 것 같네요. 언제부턴가 별이 하나둘 사라졌습니다. 이젠 밤하늘을 바라보며 상상할 일이 없어졌지요. 무료한 날들입니다. 방바닥에 등을 대고 누워 창안으로 쏟아지는 별빛의 속삭임을 이제 더 이상 들을 수 없습니다. 안타까운 일이지요. 사람들은 별들이 모두 바다에 빠져 죽은 것이라고 믿기 시작했어요. 바다 속 별들을 찾는 신종 사업에 많은 돈들이 모이기 시작했지요. 하지만 그 어떤 회사도 바다 속에서 별을 건져 올렸다는 뉴스는 없었어요. 하지만 깜깜한 저 하늘 너머엔 분명 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있겠지요. 어쩌면 다른 은하계의 한 쪽에서는 한정된 미네랄을 서로 차지하기 위해 잔혹한 자원전쟁이 한창일지도 모르죠. 아무튼, 그런 상상은 하늘이 아닌 내 앞의, 내 손바닥 위의 작은 물체로부터 옵니다. 나의 상상력은 더 이상 나에게서 나올 수 없어요. 아, 안타까운 일이지요. 그러던 어느 날, 정말 외계로부터, 아마도 오리온 성에서 비행접시가 날아왔습니다. 얼굴을 드러내지 않은 채 그들은 '북두칠성을 담아 만든 신비의 물'이라며 우리들에게 마셔보라고 권했어요. 반가운 별빛, 아, 그 그리운 가녀린 빛에 홀려 나도 모르게 마셔버렸습니다. 다음날부터 믿기지 않는 일이 벌어지기 시작했습니다. 밤하늘에서 사라졌던 별들이 하나둘 우리 안으로 돌아오기 시작한 거죠.

아침에 일어나 텔레비전을 켰습니다. 그 속에 별이 있었어요. 뭐 그럴 수도 있잖아요. 빵에 크림치즈를 발라먹으려는데 한꺼번에 네 개의 별이 떠오르지 뭐에요. 뭐 그럴 수도 있지요. 개의치 않았어요. 그런데 신발을 신고 외출을 하려는데 내 발에 별이 내려와 앉네요. 집을 나서려는데 별로 장식된 담장이 목격되었으며, 거리엔 별들이 달리기 경주를 하고 있어요. 사람들은 별들로 장식된 유니폼을 입고 어디론가 바쁘게 움직이고 있었으며, 별들의 비밀 금고가 있다는 빌딩 위 전광판에서는 별들의 잔치가 중계되고 있어요. 세상이 온통 별입니다. 오후에 잠시 들린 커피숍도 예외가 아니었어요. 사람들이 모두 잠들 무렵 엄청나게 큰 비행체가 세상의 모든 별들을 수거하고 있었어요. 물론 그 햄버거 가게의 별들은 집으로 돌아가지 못했지만 말이죠. 그리고 잠시 후 밤하늘엔 세 개의 별이 하나가 되어 아주 큰 파란 별로 남겨졌습니다. 내일 아침에도 수많은 별들이 우리를 다시 찾아오겠지요? 우리가 잃어버린 밤하늘의 수많은 별들도 다시 찾아오겠지요? 아마도 그럴 거예요. * 이 글은 본 전시에 출품한 졸작, 『별이 빛나는 밤』(2012, 단채널 영상, 7분5초)의 나레이션을 옮긴 것이다. ■ 배종헌

The Starry Night ● It is time to talk about stars again. The stars have disappeared one by one. I do not imagine any more, looking up at the night sky. Boring days! I cannot hear the whispering of starlight pouring into through a window while I'm lying on the floor. What a shame! People begin believing that all stars were drowned at sea. So much money has been invested in new projects to search for the stars under the sea. But there has been no news of any company dragging a star up from the sea. What may happen in the pitch-dark night sky? Cruel wars over limited natural resources may be in high gear in another galaxy. Anyway, such imagination comes not from heaven but from a small object in the palm of my hand. My imagination cannot come out anymore. Ah, it is too regrettable. One day a flying saucer appeared. It was probably from the Orion Nebula. Extraterrestrials offered us "magic water made by dipping the Big Dipper" without revealing their faces. I drank the water unconsciously, lured by welcome starlight and its thin rays. Something unbelievable happened the following day: the stars that had disappeared from the night sky returned to us one by one. ● After getting out of bed, I turn on the television. There is a star within it. It could happen! The four stars come up when I'm trying to eat bread with cream cheese. That could be so! I don't mind at all. When putting on shoes to leave the house, stars land on the shoes. I witness the wall decorated with stars and stars racing on the street. Those wearing uniforms adorned with stars are busy moving somewhere, and a feast of stars is relayed through an electronic display on a building where it is known there is the stars'secret safe. The world is entirely filled with stars. A coffee shop I stopped at in the afternoon was no exception. Around the time when all people in the world are about to fall asleep, a tremendously huge flying vehicle collects all the stars in the world. Of course, the stars at the hamburger shop could not return to their home. After a while, the three stars have been left as a big blue star in the night sky. Will numerous stars visit us again tomorrow morning? Will the countless stars we lost in a night sky come back again?
