무엇에 취해 있어야 할까요

점 a와 b를 잇는 선분이 있고, 그 사이의 거리를 c라고 합시다. a를 중심점으로 하여 b를 회전시키면 원을 그릴 수 있습니다. a, c는 고정되어 있고 b는 움직이지만, 그 이동은 a의 위치와 c의 거리에 의해 정해지는 궤도를 따릅니다. 태양계의 운행이 그렇고 나무의 나이테도 이런 조건 속에서 작동하며, 사람의 삶과 예술가의 행적도 마찬가지입니다.

여러분은 지난 2,3년간의 미술원 전문사 과정을 통해서 자신의 중심점 a를 찾았고 이를 출발점으로 하여 점점 커져가는 자신의 궤적을 그려왔습니다. 이번 전시는 그 결과를 세상에 내놓고 각자의 작가적 출발을 알리는 자리입니다. 자신의 출발점 a로부터 가장 멀리 떨어진 곳을 향해 이동한 사람이 가장 큰 원을 그리게 될 것입니다. 그러나 중요한 것은 더 멀리까지 나아가고 더 큰 궤적을 그리게 되는 결과보다, 그 결과에 이르는 매일 매일의 과정입니다. 서두르지 않고 나이테가 자라듯이 각자의 궤도를 충실히 그려가기 바랍니다. 지금 이 순간 내가 무엇으로 인해 예술가인가를 끊임없이 질문하는 겸허함과 뜨거운 열정을 가슴 속에 나침판처럼 품고서 꿋꿋이 앞으로 나아가기 바랍니다. ● 전시회를 위해 애써준 여러 학생들과 지도교수님들께 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 이제 미술가로서 첫 걸음을 내딛은 여러분의 건투를 빕니다. ■ 안규철

Let's imagine that there is a line segment connecting points A and B, and call the distance between the points, C. When you rotate the point B with point A as the central point, you can draw a circle. Although point A and distance C are immovable and only point B moves, the movement traces an orbit which is determined by the location of point A and the length of C. The movement of the solar system, the formation of timber annual rings, a person's life and the deeds of an artist are all alike in this regard. ● For the last two or three years, you have found your own central point A throughout the graduate studies at the School of Visual Arts, and with this as the starting point, you have drawn an ever expanding orbit of yours. This exhibition is a momentous occasion where you present the achievements to the world and declare your new beginning as an artist. The person who makes a move from the starting point A to a farthest point will be the one who will draw a largest circle. However, the important aspect is not about reaching the farthest point and drawing the largest orbit, but rather the everyday journey that leads you closer to where the goals lie. I hope that you do not hasten but continue to move on, and faithfully draw your own annual rings just like the way timber annual rings are formed. I wish you to firmly take your steps forward with a modest attitude of continuously questioning 'What is it that makes me an artist?' and also with zealous aspiration placed at the core of the mind which I hope will guide you like a compass. ● I would like to wholeheartedly thank the students and the faculty members who have put in an enormous effort to make this exhibition come true.
