당신의 필요와 요구 Needed and Desired

신은경은 비판해야 한다는 요구로부터 거리를 둠으로써 비판을 비판한다. 이제까지 작가들이 뭔가를 비판해온 방식으로부터 거리를 두고, 뭔가를 비판해야 작가노릇을 한다는 그 명제로부터도 거리를 둔다. 비판을 비판하는 사람은 정중동 속에서 자신만의 움직임을 만들어 낸다. 그래서 그녀의 공간사진은 한없이 정적이지만 마음속에 물결을 일으킨다. 정적이기 때문이다. 그 사진들이 말이 많고 메시지를 강요하는 식이었다면 그 소리들은 노이즈가 되어 결국엔 사진에서 아무 말도 들을 수 없었을 것이다. 그 사진들이 조용하기 때문에 소리가 들린다.

「하루 필요량」 작업에서 신은경은 사람이 하루에 필요로 하는 각종 알약들의 사진과 그 내용을 말로 써서 병치시켜 놨는데, 그 양상이 전에 하던 공간작업의 연장선상에 있다고 할 수 있다. 웨딩홀의 키치공간과 하루에 먹는 약의 이미지는 완전히 다른 것이지만 말 하는 톤이 비슷하게 차분하니 같은 진술을 하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그것은 이미지를 욕망하는 자신과 일정하게 거리를 둔 태도이다. 사진가로서 가장 하기 힘든 일이다.

알약사진들을 통해 우리가 하루에 필요로 하고 원하는 것을 보여준다는 것도 꼭 우리가 이런 것 없으면 살 수 없는 한심한 존재라는 뜻은 아니다. 오히려, 신은경 자신도 이런 약이 필요하다는 말처럼 들린다. 왜냐면 '당신'은 '나'일 수도 있기 때문에. 너가 나가 되는 변증법이 전제돼지 않는다면 이 사진은 별 의미가 없다. 그 알약들을 먹는 것이 '너'에 그치고 만다면 나와는 아무 상관이 없는 것이기 때문이다. 그 '너'가 나이기도 하기 때문에 이 사진들은 우리 모두에 걸쳐 있는 주체와 사물의 관계망에 대해 다루고 있다. ■ 이영준

Shin Eunkyung listens to the voice of desire. However, the voice is silent. She faces the silent that silences the imminent voice of desire with photographs. She photographs what people wanted but never achieved. Shin Eunkyung deals with the unfulfilled desire revealed in the form of visual representation. Wedding halls and pills are totally different things but are same in that both echo the voice of desire. But this voice is not visually representable. So she faces her own desire of photography. She reveals the sly face of her photographs that have concealed their own desire. Thus one sees in her photographs traces of desire. ● Desire is what people think other people desire them to do what they desire. Therefore desire is a desire about desire. In a theoretical term, desire is caught in an intersubjective juncture. Which means, your desire is my desire and vice versa. Sometimes this juncture turns out to be a pitfall. However, one does not have to feel embarrassed when falling into it as desire is what always frustrates the chance to pick the ultimate fruit. So desire is always frustrated right in front of the gate to heaven. That heaven e×ists only to those who think there is heaven right there. It will be discovered in the mirror of self reflection as pure as quartz. So, has photography ever been as transparent as quartz? Shin Eunkyung wonders. ■ Young June Lee
