The Land and The People

본 전시는 캘리포니아주립대학교 인문대학에서 판화라는 동일한 매체를 다루는 10명의 한국작가들의 작품을 초대한 전시다. 본 캘리포니아 주립대학 라이브러리 갤러리 University Library Gallery, CSUS는 국내전은 물론 국제전을 중심으로 매년 4회의 전시회를 초청 개최함으로써 대학 내 학생과 교수진은 물론, 새크라멘토 지역주민에게 다양한 문화권의 미술문화를 알리는 핵심적 역할을 담당하고 있다. 2014년 본 인문대학의 첫 기획으로 한국의 현대목판화의 깊은 서사와 서정, 다양한 기법과 독특한 조형성을 통하여 판화미술과 동시대성, 그리고 특정한 공간에서의 지역성이 성공적으로 결합하는 미적 결과물을 펼쳐 보이려 한다. 전시제목은『Contemporary Korean Prints - The Land and The People』로 세계 판화의 흐름 속에서 가장 독특한 한국판화의 오늘의 궤적을 핵심적으로 추린 것이다. 판화, 특히 목판화는 아시아예술의 가장 오래된 전통 중 하나이며 현재까지 한국의 시각적 삶에 중추적 역할을 한다. 한국의 판화미술은 그 극적인 그래픽파워로 인해 미적, 장식적, 교육적, 행정적, 그리고 정치적 목적에 이르기까지 한국 문화 전반에 걸쳐 깊숙이 스며들어 있다. ● 본 전시를 위해 선정된 10명의 작가는 한국현대목판화의 다양성을 보여준다. 작가들의 작품은 서상환, 이상국, 김억, 류연복 등의 전통적 목판을 바탕으로부터, 김준권의 수성목판화, 윤여걸의 한지릴리프기법, 정원철과 이윤엽의 설치작업, 안정민의 실험적인 실리콘캐스팅 목판화 기법과 정상곤의 디지털프로세스에 이르기까지 그 다양한 조형적 스펙트럼을 아우른다.

다양한 기법에 더하여 각 작가는 자신의 독특한 관점에서 각자의 서사와 주제들을 다루고 있다. 기본적으로 90년대 이후 한국의 정서와 일상성의 바탕에서 개인적이거나 사회적인 서정과 서사를 아우르며 동시대의 삶과 문화를 반영하는 내용들로 전시는 구성된다. 1부는『The Land』란 제목으로 이상국(1947~), 안정민(1952~), 김준권(1956~), 김억(1956~), 류연복(1957~) 등의 풍경목판화들이다. 산동네 풍경을 통해서 서민정서와 삶의 에너지를 포착하는 이상국, 액션페인팅을 연상시키는 호방한 칼질의 흔적으로 폭포를 통한 자기반성을 유도하는 안정민, 수성목판화의 새로운 질감으로 한국적 서정을 담백하게 번안하는 김준권, 국토에서의 사는 사람들의 삶의 편린들을 풍경으로 엮어내는 김억, 역시 국토풍경을 통해서 분단현실과 민초들의 강한 생명성을 은유하는 류연복의 작품들이 여기에 해당한다.

2부는『The People』란 제목이다. 바로 이 국토에 사는 사람들의 모습을 소재로 한 작업이다. 서상환( (1942~), 윤여걸(1956~), 정원철(1960~), 정상곤(1962~), 이윤엽(1967~) 등의 작가들이 여기에 해당한다. 오리엔탈리즘에 기반해서 유불선과 기독교를 아우르며 인간 정신성을 탐구하는 서상환, 도회에서의 일상성과 삶의 편린에 대한 주관적 정서를 포착하는 윤여걸,「정신대」할머니들을 소재로 하여 한국 근현대사의 비극과 보편적인 휴머니즘에 대한 문제에 천착하는 정원철, 역시 국내 사회정치적 현장에서 당대의 모순에 대한 날카로운 비판성을 견지하는 이윤엽, 그리고 디지털 사진 기법으로 가장 냉정한 문법으로 도회적 일상과 세태를 반영하는 정상곤의 작업이 여기에 해당된다. 이들의 작업은 소재나 기법 면에서 모두 다르다. 작가마다 독자적인 자기 서사와 표현문법과 기법을 갖고 있다는 말이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이들의 작품을 한 곳에 모았을 때「오늘의 한국」이라는 동시대성이 묵직하게 연결되며 울림을 준다. 서양적 시각에서 볼 때 어떻게 이들 작가들이 서로 다른 어법과 문법으로 표현성, 상징성, 사실성 등을 하나의 큰 주제와 조형성의 덩어리로 병합하는가를 발견할 수 있어 흥미롭다. ● 이들 작가 중 현재 추계예술대학 교수인 정원철은 2014년 4월, 본 캘리포니아 주립대 인문대학 주최로 열리는 아트페스티벌에 초청될 예정이다. 초청작가는 10일동안 미술학과 판화실에서 창작활동을 통해 판화제작시범을 보이고 학생들과의 교류를 가질 것이다. 또한 4월 9일엔 본 전시 한국 측 기획자인 미술평론가이자 전시기획가인 김진하의 한국현대판화에 대한 강연이 열린다.한국판화, 특히 목판화의 독자성과 국제적인 소통의 가능성을 이 전시와 워크샵, 강연이 잘 보여줄 것이다. 이번 기획은 이런 한국판화의 전통적 역사와 현대적 우수성이 미국 내에서 성공적으로 소개되고 교류되는 단초가 될 것이다. ■ 구경숙_이안 하비

This is the second exhibition of contemporary Korean art that Koo Kyung Sook and Ian Harvey have presented in the University Library Gallery. The previous exhibition, Field of Life – the Body in Contemporary Korean Art, in 2008, explored the range of contemporary Korean artistic practice. The current exhibition features ten artists working in one medium that has special significance in Korean culture. Printmaking, especially wood block printing, is one of the oldest traditions in Asian art and continues to be vital in the visual life of Korea. This tradition permeated throughout Korean culture lending the drama of its graphic power to aesthetic, decorative, educational, administrative and political purposes. ● The ten artists selected for this exhibition representthe diversity of contemporary printmaking in South Korea. The artists span three generations and their work encompasses techniques from traditional woodblock, linocut, lithography, and etching, to experimental silicon casting and digital processes. In addition to their individual technical approaches, each artist responds to the subject from their own unique perspective. These perspectives range from the social and political documentary of Won Chul Jung's images of "comfort women", to Yeon Bok Ryu's expressionistic and symbolic interpretations of the landscape. The artists, however, make little if any distinction between these perspectives. From a Western point of view it is interesting to see how theartists merge expressive, symbolic and documentary purposes into a unified, expressive whole. One artist will be selected to visit the University as an Artist-In-Residence during the annual Festival of the Arts hosted by the College of Arts and Letters in April. The artist will spend 10 days working in the Art Department print shop creating a work, giving demonstrations, and interacting with students. ● It is the intention of the curators to present Korean art that would otherwise be unavailable to our audience in the region and the State of California. While many of the artists have exhibited in Europe, Japan, and China, only four have exhibited previously in the United States. Harvey and Koo will present a public lecture in the gallery at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 12. For this exhibition Harvey and Koo have had the assistance of Jinha Kim who is the leading authority on printmaking in Korea. Kim has been essential to the development of this exhibition by providing introductions to artists and their studios. Based in Seoul, Kim has written extensively on the subject and has produced catalogs and exhibitions for national museums. During the exhibition, at a date and time to be announced, Kim will present a lecture on the historyof Korean wood block prints and contemporary printmaking practice. ■ Ian Harvey_Koo Kyung Sook
