생산적인, 너무나 생산적인

공장미술제는 1999년, 한국 현대미술의 질적인 발전이라는 목표 아래 청년작가 발굴 및 육성과 미술교육기관간의 대화의 창구를 열기 위해 첫 회가 개최되었다. 이 전시를 통해 당시의 청년작가들은 제도권 영향 아래의 전시 공간에서는 실현할 수 없던 실험적이고 자유로운 작품 세계를 실제 공장이라는 공간에서 선보일 수 있었으며, 이러한 새로운 시도는 정체된 한국 시각예술계에 또 다른 시사점을 제시하였다. ● 이번『제4회 공장미술제』에는 국내 17개 미술교육기관(대학/대학원)이 참여하며, 특히 올 해는 국외 예술 대학의 참여가 돋보인다. 중국 중앙미술학원(Central Academy of Fine Arts), 태국 쭐랄롱꼰 대학교(Chulalongkorn University), 씰라빠꼰 대학교(Silpakorn University), 일본 동경예술대학교(Tokyo University of the Arts), 호주 빅토리안 예술대학(Victorian College of the Art)이 참여하였으며, 이번『제4회 공장미술제』를 시작으로 해외 대학의 참여는 더욱 확대 될 예정이다. ● 국내/외 주요 예술교육기관에서 선발된 92명의 청년 작가들은 회화, 조각, 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 장르의 작품을 통해 젊은 작가 특유의 실험적이고 독창적인 작품 세계를 선보인다. 또한 음악 등 타 장르와의 연계를 통해 무경계 예술 페스티벌로 진화되며, 정체된 형태의 기존 미술 전시회에서는 마주할 수 없는 역동성과 더불어 한국 현대미술의 현재와 미래를 살펴볼 좋은 기회가 될 것이다. ● 공장미술제는 이러한 결과에 힘입어 향후 정기적인 프로젝트로 개최되며, 매번 자연스럽게 축적되는 젊은 작가들의 아트 아카이브 데이터는 DB화 하여 저장된다. 이는 향후 한국 미술계의 새로운 방향성을 제시하고 가늠하게 하는 도구로 활용될 것이다. 또한 전시에 참여하는 국내/외 유수의 예술교육기관들 간의 콜로키움 형성을 유도하여 21세기적 대안 예술교육 프로그램 개발의 기반을 마련 할 것이다. 이렇듯 공장미술제는 한국 미술사와 미술교육 발전에 기여함과 동시에 청년 작가의 등용문이 됨은 물론이고, 실험성과 독창성을 필두에 둔 젊은 예술을 상징하는 신개념 무경계 예술 페스티벌로 발전하게 될 것이다. ■ 문두성

In 1999, under an objective of advancing the Korean Contemporary art in quality, the 1st Art Factory Project was held to open a window of communication between art educational institutions and to discover and develop young artists. In this exhibition, at a space in a real factory, young artists could show their worlds of creative and experimental art which were difficult to bring in to the exhibition spaces under the existing system's influence. This kind of new attempt presented another perspective to the backed up world of the Korean visual art. ● 17 of the Korean art educational institutions (Universities/Graduate Schools) have participated in 'the 4th Art Factory Project', and this year, foreign art universities have specially participated. Central Academy of Fine Arts in China, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan, Victorian College of the Art in Australia have participated, and the participation of foreign art universities is set out to grow more from the 4th Art Factory Project this year. ● 92 young artists selected from the major art educational institutions from domestic and foreign, present their unique and experimental art worlds as young and fresh artists in many different genres such as, painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance. Also, through collaboration with other genres like music and etc, their art works evolve into a no-boundary art festival to provide a great opportunity to observe a dynamic energy that cannot be seen in the existing art exhibitions in backed-up forms, along with the Korean art's present and future. ● Because of these achievements, Art Factory Project will continue into a long-term project in the future, and the art archive data of the accumulated young artists from every year will be preserved in a data base. This will be used as a tool of determining and providing a new direction in the Korean art world in the future. And it will lead to establish a colloquium between the participating art educational institutions from domestic and foreign to provide a platform of developing 21st century's art education program. With all these efforts, Art Factory Project will contribute in advancing the Korean art education and art history, become a gateway for young artists, and develop into a new concept of a no-boundary art festival representing the young art of experiment and creativity. ■ Doosung MOON
