2013 서울 포커스 - 한국화의 반란 Beyond Korean Painting전은 한국화를 전공하고 형식과 내용면에서 지속적으로 다양한 방법을 시도하는 동시대작가들을 초청하여 한국화의 흐름을 새롭게 모색하는 전시이다. 이 전시는 2000년 전후 한국화의 새로운 양상과 미래를 조망하기 위해 자유로운 조형 활동을 펼치고 있는 3~40대 젊은 작가들의 작업경향을 집중적으로 살펴보는 자리이다. ● 이미 여러 세대를 거쳐 표현기법과 소재 선택에 폭넓은 자유가 허락된 미술환경 속에서 젊은 한국화 작가들은 어떤 고민을 하고, 앞으로 어떻게 나아가야 하는가? 의 질문과 함께 시작된 본 전시는 초청작가 12인의 드로잉, 회화, 사진, 조각, 설치 등 다양한 작품 30여 점으로 구성된다.

최근 10년 사이 젊은 한국화 작가들은 과거 1960년대 이후 1970~80년대를 거치면서 현대 한국화를 정립하려했던 선배 작가들이 그러했듯이 전통의 틀 안과 밖을 넘나들며 진취적으로 한국화의 다변화를 이루어 가고 있다. 이들의 작품 경향을 살펴보면 먹과 색의 결합의 한계를 뛰어넘어 보다 현대적인 감각을 성취하며 나름대로의 재해석과 실험을 거친 조형 활동을 활발하게 보이고 있다. '현대 한국화'의 정립을 위해 오늘의 작가들은 산수, 인물, 이상향으로 지금 이 시대의 역사를 담아내며 현대 한국화의 동시대성을 획득하고 있다. ● 이렇듯 전통을 다양하게 해석해내는 이 시대 젊은 작가들의 목소리를 통해 이 전시가 향후 후학들에게 나아갈 방향을 제시하며 한국화의 새로운 변화의 조짐을 감지할 수 있는 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다. ■ 서울시립 북서울미술관

2013 Seoul Focus - Beyond Korean Painting is an exhibition that seeks to explore new trends in Korean painting through artworks by participating contemporary artists who have majored in Korean painting and who are continuously trying new methods in terms of style and content. To shed light on new Korean painting trends, which emerged around 2000, and on the future of Korean painting, this exhibition will focus on the trends of artworks by young artists in their 30s and 40s and who are freely engaging in art. This exhibition started with questions such as the attempts and direction of young Korean artists in an art environment where various expression methods as well as a wide range of material choices are available. It features some 30 artworks by 12 invited artists in the genres of drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and installation. ● For the last 10 years, young Korean artists have been making diverse, revolutionary experiments in Korean painting as they cross the boundary of tradition of Korean painting, like the established artists who tried to lay the foundation for contemporary korean painting since the 1960, and particulary through the period of the 1970s and 1980s. The trends of artworks by young Korean artists show them actively engaging in art as they reinterpret and experiment with their contemporary sensibility, which goes beyond the limit of muk (traditional Korean ink) and color. To establish "contemporary Korean painting," today's Korean artists are realizing the contemporaneity of Korean painting through subjects such as landscape, people, and utopia as they explore the history of current time. ● As such, through the artworks of contemporary young artists who are interpreting our tradition in various ways, this exhibition will be able to suggest a new direction for future artists, and it will serve as a venue to present new trends in Korean painting. ■ Buk Seoul Museum of Art
