대화법 Dialogue Method ● 본 프로젝트의 제목이자 흔히 평화로운 관계 지향의 대표적 소통 방식으로 상징화되는 '대화법'은 아이러니하게도 '폭력'에 대한 고민에서 출발했다. 폭력이란 무엇인가? 우리의 궁극적인 관심은 겉으로 드러나는 폭력의 행위나 상태보다는, 그 이전에 이를 유발하는 상황, 혹은 그것이 잠재된 관계들에 있다. 즉, 가시적이고 표피적인 폭력의 행태 이면에 더 깊숙하게 존재하는 근원적이고 구조적인 원인을 파악하고자 한다. 폭력을 이해하려는 방법으로 대화를 선택한 이유는 두 관계의 형태가 마치 동전의 양면처럼 서로 맞닿아 있기 때문이다. 폭력은 단독의 존재에서는 성립될 수 없는 상호 작용이며, 이는 대화 역시 마찬가지이다. 그렇다면, 타자 간 관계의 방식 중 대화와 폭력이 구분되는 지점은 어디에 있을까?

대화법 프로젝트는 일차적으로 시각 예술과 무용이라는 서로 다른 언어 감각을 전문화해 온 예술가들의 대화법 연구를 통해 우리에게 퇴화한 감각을 되살리는 제3의 소통 방식을 찾고자 한다는 목표를 내세운다. 그러나 그 이면에는 서로 다른 언어를 사용하는 두 존재 간의 만남에서 발생 가능한 소통과 폭력의 형태를 관찰하고자 하는 의도가 숨어있다. 이는 소통의 가능성과 불가능성을 저울의 양쪽 날개에 위에 올려놓고 어느 쪽으로 기우는지 시험하는 일이기도 했다. 프로젝트에서 하태범(시각예술가), 최형우(시각예술가), 배세은(큐레이터), 이은실(안무가) 네 사람은 세 가지 협업 방식을 보여준다. 첫째, 각자의 영역에서 구축된 언어의 차이와 소통의 가능성을 주제로 안무가는 무용 공연의 안무를 구성하고, 시각예술가들은 공연을 위한 무대를 설치하여, 두 장르의 협업 공연을 완성한다. ● 또 하나의 협업 방식은 대화법의 매뉴얼을 제작하는 것이다. 참여자들은 공연 준비를 위해 만나 각자의 예술 언어를 서로에게 설명하는 대화 속에서 서로 사고 과정과 언어 표현 방식의 상이성을 인지하게 된다. 이에 시각예술과 무용의 소통이 어떻게 이루어져야 하는지 일반적이면서도 조금은 엉뚱한 제안들을 해 봄으로써 관계의 지침서를 만들기로 한다. 만남에서 공연에 이르기까지 협업의 과정에서 터득한 소통의 방식에 대해 서로 논의한 후, 그 결과를 정리해 무용의 언어로 표현하고, 이를 촬영하여 편집한다. 이는 무엇보다 대화의 과정을 통해 각자 영역의 거리를 좁히고, 교감의 영역을 넓히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그럼에도 이 결과물이 두 대상 간 소통의 가능성에 대한 긍정이나 부정의 표현은 아니다. 오히려 그것은 서로 다른 언어를 사용하는 존재 간에 발생 가능한 소통의 어떤 형태를 시각 예술가와 무용수라는 비유를 통해 제안하고자 하는 것이다.

셋째, 모든 프로젝트의 과정은 계속 촬영되고 녹취된다. 협업과 대화의 과정은 그 자체로 이 프로젝트에서 매우 큰 의미를 차지하는데, 이를 시나리오 작업을 거쳐 다시 각색하여 관객에게 보여주기 위한 다큐멘터리로 재촬영해 전시장에 상영한다. 5개월간의 긴 프로젝트 과정을 단시간에 전달하기 위해 선택한 다큐멘터리 제작은 실제의 기록이 아닌 연기된 상황이다. 이는 일차적으로 전달의 편이를 위함이지만, 사실을 전제로 하는 다큐멘터리가 편집자의 의도가 개입되어 왜곡되는 상황을 보여 줌으로써 미디어 소통 과정에서 발생하는 오해에 대한 불가피성을 표면화하는 방법이기도 하다. 또한, 여기서 시각예술 관련자 3명과 무용수 1명이라는 상황 설정은 사실 상대적 다수인 시각 예술가들이 무용수 한 명에게 일방적으로 무용 언어에 대해 묻고, 무용수는 표현이 익숙하지 않은 말로 자신의 영역을 설명해야 하는 난처한 상황을 유발한다. 이는 소통의 구조에서 발생할 수 있는 폭력의 암시이기도 하다. 이러한 설정은 프로젝트의 '대화법'이 둘 간의 진정한 소통이 이뤄지는 이상적 대화를 목표로 삼으면서도 그것의 가능성에 대해 가지는 애매한 입장을 보여 준다.

대화는 단순히 언어를 주고받는 행위 이상의 것이다. 상대의 몸짓과 표정, 눈빛의 의미를 읽는 일, 언어 안에 담긴 서로 다른 세계관의 차이를 확인하는 일, 언어의 행간에 존재하는 의미를 파악하는 일 등을 포함한다. 시각 예술가와 무용수와의 협업이라는 특수한 상황을 전제로 시작한 프로젝트였지만, 사실 이는 일반적 인간관계의 상황들과 밀접하게 닿아 있다. 그 때문에 대화법 프로젝트는 일상생활 속 관계를 다시 돌아보는 계기가 되었다. 사소하게는 약속 시각을 정하는 일에서 시작해, 의견의 대립이 있을 때 상대의 감정을 다치지 않게 표현하는 일, 서로 다른 자기 위치에서 중요한 것을 강조하는 일, 부탁하는 입장과 부탁받는 입장에서 생기는 견해 차이, 이런 상황들에서 발생하는 갈등을 해결하는 것 자체가 이 프로젝트의 중요한 과정이자 목적이 되었다. 다수 페이지를 할애하여 프로젝트 동안 참여자들이 주고받은 이메일들과 메시지들을 이 자료집에 모두 수록한 이유도 여기에 있다. 세심히 살펴보면 그 안에 소통과 폭력 사이의 아슬아슬한 경계를 발견하게 될지도 모를 일이다. ● 한편, 대화법 프로젝트는 홍은예술창작센터에 입주한 하태범 작가의 기획으로 시작했다. 무용 예술가와 시각 예술가가 함께 입주한 예술 레지던시 공간이라는 특성이 프로젝트의 실제적인 계기가 되었다. 최근 예술계에서 서로 다른 영역 간의 협업이 유행처럼 번지면서 이번 프로젝트 역시 협업을 위한 협업은 아닌지 스스로 시도 자체에 대한 당위성을 의심하기도 했다. 그러나 본인은 이 프로젝트를 통해 협업이 왜 필요한가 하는 질문보다 어떻게 협업할 것인가 하는 물음이 더 유의미하다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었다. 물론, 협업을 통해 표현의 영역을 넓히는 것만큼 자기 내면의 세계를 더 깊게 파고드는 것은 예술에서 매우 중요한 자세일 것이다. 그러나 깊이를 위해 넓이를 좁혀야 할 이유는 없을 뿐 아니라 때로 두 가지 요소는 서로를 필요로 하기 때문이다. 같은 이유로 삶의 깊이를 만들고 지평을 넓히는 과정에서, 삶 속 예술을 겪어 내는 과정에서 대화법 프로젝트는 계속될 것이다. ■ 배세은

This project's title, "Dialogue Method," is commonly represented as peaceful relationship-related communication method, but idea of the project ironically started from 'violence.' What is violence? Our interest ultimately leads to the cause of violence or potential relationship, rather than action or situation. This project is going to grasp on innermost fundamental and structural cause behind the visible violence behavior. Dialogue was chosen to understand the violence because cause and behavior's relationship is like two-side coin. Violence cannot be interacted as a single existence, and so is dialogue. Where is the midpoint of dialogue and violence in relationship methods? ● "Dialogue Method" project's main objective is to find the third dialogue method that can revive our degenerated sense via visual artists and dancers' primary dialogue method study. But behind this objective, its hidden intention is to observe possible communication and violence when two existence. It was as if scaling possibility and impossibility of communication, and test where it's leaning to. Ha Tae Bum (Visual artist,) Choi Hyung Woo (Visual artist,) Bae Se Eun (Curator,) Lee Eun Sil (Choreographer) shows collaboration method in this project. First, Choreographer choreographs for the performance and visual artists install the stage to complete two genres' collaborative performances in the theme of possibilities of communication and language difference built in their field. ● Another collaboration method is to produce dialogue method manual. Participants have conversation as they explain their own artistic language, and perceive difference between thinking process and language expression. Thus, they decide to make a guideline of relationship about how visual art and choreography should communicate with general but often bold ideas. Participants go through these steps from the day they first met to the day of performance: discuss using communication method they've learned during collaboration process, express the result in choreography language, film, and finally edit. The purpose of this process is to narrow the distance between genres via dialogue process and broaden the area of communication. The result of this process doesn't express affirmation or denial about the possibility of two genres. It rather suggests various forms of communication between different languages through visual artists and choreographer. ● Third, all of process gets filmed and recorded. Whole process of collaboration and dialogue itself is very significant. Film was rewritten, plotted, re-filmed to feature the documentary for public in exhibition. Every scene is acted out to shorten and deliver 5 months long project process in the short film. It's primary produced to convey the information easily, but it's one of methods to bring inevitable misunderstanding visually by distorting the documentary by the editor whereas the documentary is based on facts. Also, the concept of putting 3 visual art related people and 1 choreographer in one place makes artists to question choreographer about her language; it creates awkward situation to the choreographer to explain about her field in language that she's unfamiliar of. This type of communication method may imply to violence. This concept leads "Dialogue Method" to aim for an ideal dialogue with true communication, but also shows ambiguous status about the possibility. ● Dialogue is more than just exchanging words. It includes reading other's action, expression, and eye contact, understanding other's different field through their language, and grasping the meaning of spaces between language, and etc. The project started with visual artists and choreographer's special collaboration as a premise, but it's actually intimate with circumstances in relationships in daily life. Thus, "Dialogue Method" project helped to reflect on relationship during daily life. Decide the meeting time, express the opinion without hurting other's feeling when there's conflict, emphasize the important things in each other's position, solve conflicts between person who requests and person who receives requests; all these became important process and objective. This is why collected e-mail messages from the participants were included in this sourcebook. You may see the close boundary between dialogue and violence as you read carefully. ● Meanwhile, "Dialogue Method" was planned by artist Ha Tae Bum, who is a resident of Seoul Art Space - Hongeun. Hongeun's condition of having choreographers and visual artists as part of residents brought him actual idea of this project. As collaborating with different art field became a trend, this project was questioned if it was collaboration for collaborations, or if it was appropriate to proceed. But I became aware of the fact that it's more significant to ask how to collaborate rather than to ask why collaboration is necessary. It may be very important in the arts to go in depth through inner self as the expression is being expanded through collaboration. But it's not necessary to narrow the gap for the depth; rather these two elements occasionally need each other. "Dialogue Method" will continue, as the life gets wider and deeper, and go through life of the arts. ■ Bae Se Eun
