ZYLON

갤러리바톤은 벨기에 작가 쿤 반 덴 브룩(Koen Van Den Broek, b. 1973)의 두번째 개인전이자, 압구정 신규 전시 공간 개관 전시인 "ZYLON"전을 12월 13일 부터 2014년 1월 29일까지 연다. 2011년 봄에 아시아 최초 개인전(Gallery Baton, From the East to the West and Back)을 통해 작가의 트레이드마크인 Street Motived Painting을 선보인 이래, 보다 더 추상성이 가미된 신작들로 열리게 될 이번 전시는 갤러리바톤의 압구정 신규 전시 공간 이전과 맞물려 올 겨울 미술애호가들에게 유럽 주류 컨템퍼러리 페인팅을 경험할 수 있는 좋은 기회를 선사할 것이다.

대학에서 건축을 전공했던 작가는 도로, 교통 구조물 등 기능적 목적하에 창조된 기하학적 공간을 탐구한다. 여행을 통해 작가에 의해 촬영된 사진이 작품의 발원지이며 캔버스로 옮겨지는 과정에서 추상성이 부여됨과 동시에 이미지의 해체와 강조의 연속 반응이 일어나게 된다. 이로 인해 강조되어지는 것은 빈공간, 그림자 들인 반면 사물은 세부 묘사가 생략 되고 선,면 등이 원색으로 강조 또는 퇴색되면서 반추상에 가까운 결과물을 낳게 된다.

추상성과 더불어 차용된 이미지와 공간에 대한 작가의 주관적인 해석이 보다 강조된 그의 신작은, 과거 작품들이 제목(주로 사진이 촬영된 거리 또는 장소의 이름)을 통해 탈추상화를 시도했던 패턴을 상당 부분 차단함으로서 보다 추상적이고 관념적인 성격을 내포한다. 그림자로 유추되는 반복되는 검은 덩어리, 채도가 높은 유채색 선과 면의 두드러짐, 캔버스 바탕에 부유하듯 흩트러져 있는 색면 조각들은 그의 전작에 익숙해 있는 관람자에게만 제한적인 암시를 내 보인다.

그의 작품은 작가의 초현실적인 경험 또는 주관적인 기억의 해석 등 통상적인 추상회화의 출발점과 달리 철저히 인공적인 구조물과 공간을 기본으로 하기에, 원래 이미지로 환원될 수 있는 복원력이 잠재해 있다. 다만, 캘리포니아의 어느 거리, 어스름한 저녁의 사막 주변 등 작가가 마주친 특정한 시간과 공간에 대한 극히 사적인 경험을 공유하지 않은 상황에서는 의도적으로 비워진 공간들과 무작위적으로 배치된 색면과 방향성을 통해 원래의 이미지를 유추 할 수 있을 뿐이다. 작가의 언급처럼 Pieter Mondrian, Ed Ruscha, Ellsworth Kelly 등 많은 작가들이 거리와 자신을 둘러싼 공간을 모티브로 작품활동을 이어가다 점차 자신만의 개성을 강조시켰듯히, 어쩌면 작가는 이번 신작을 통해 자신이 앞으로 걸어갈 길에 대한 이정표를 발견해 냈는지도 모른다. 어떠한 정치적 함의나 사회적인 메세지로 부터 자유로운 그의 작품들은 대형 캔버스와 화려한 색의 조합으로 부터 뜻밖의 고요를 선사하는데, 인공적인 색의 조합으로부터 뿜어져 나오는 시각적인 경험과 고요는 순수 미술의 궁극적 지향점에 대한 고찰을 하도록 우리를 이끈다.

쿤 반 덴 브룩은 1973년 벨기에에서 태어났다. 르우벤(Leuven)에서 건축학 학사를 마치고 미술로 전공을 바꾸어 앤트워프(Antwerp)의 로열 아카데미 오브 파인 아트와 네델란드의 아카데미 오브 비쥬얼아트 등에서 수학하였다. White Cube에서의 3차례 개인전, SFMoMA(San Francisco MoMA)에서 "Matisse and Beyond: A Century of Modernism(2003)"전, S.M.A.K Museum에서의 회고전, "THIS AN EXAMPLE OF THAT" 전시를 통해 생존해있는 현대미술 의 거장인 존 발데사리(John Baldessari(b. 1931))와의 공동 작품 제작 및 개인 전(Galerie Greta Meert, Brussels)을 여는 등 국제 미술계의 호평과 함께 주요 매체와 비평가들의 관심을 이끌어 내기도 하였고, SFMoMA(SF, USA), S.M.A.K (Belgium), LA County Museum (LA, USA), Leeum Collection (Seoul, Korea) 등 세계 수준의 미술관의 콜렉션에 포함되는 등 그 만의 독특한 화풍과 예술적 접근 방식이 세계 유수의 갤러리와 미술관 등에서 인정을 받고 있다. ■ GB

Gallery Baton is pleased to announce "ZYLON", the second solo exhibition of Koen Van Den Broek (b.1973) at the new exhibition space in Apgujeong(Gangnam, Seoul) from December 13th to January 29th, 2014. ● "From the East to the West and Back" was exhibited in the spring of 2011 at Gallery Baton, and it was the artist's first solo exhibit in Asia, in which the artist showed Street Motived Painting known as his trademark. Following the artist's previous exhibit, "ZYLON" presents the artist's new works that have more abstractness in quality. This opening exhibit of Gallery Baton's new exhibition space in Apgujeong will present a great opportunity for the art lovers to experience major European contemporary paintings. ● Having studied architecture, the artist explores geometric space created for the functional purposes like roads and transportation structures. His works originate from the photographs taken during his travels, and in the process of being transferred onto the canvas, abstractness is applied, and, at the same time, the dissolution of image and sequential reactions of emphasis occur. The emphasized elements, as a result, are empty space and shadows, but the depiction of details on the objects is omitted while semi-abstract output is born as lines and surfaces are highlighted or faded into primary colors. ● His new works, which are emphasized by the artist's subjective interpretation about appropriated image and space in addition to abstraction, block the patterns that were used when he made attempts in the past to create anti-abstraction through the titles of the works, such as incorporating the names of the roads or places of the photographed locations. Therefore, these works suggest more abstract and conceptual qualities. Repeated black mass seen as shadows, conspicuousness of saturated chromatic line and surface, and colored fragments that are strayed as if floating on the background of the canvas display limited allusion to the viewers who are familiar with the artist's previous works. ● Since his work is strictly based on artificial structures and space unlike the starting point of conventional abstract paintings, such as the artist's surreal experience or subjective interpretation of memory, it has potential force of restoring the original image. Nevertheless, in situations where the artist does not share the specific time and space from personal experiences, such as a street in California or some place near the desert at one evening, the original image can only be inferred from deliberately vacates spaces, color surfaces and directions that are placed randomly. ● As the artist noted, many artists like Pieter Mondrian, Ed Ruscha, and Ellsworth Kelly gradually emphasized their individualistic elements while continuing their works on the motif of surrounding streets and space. Perhaps the artist might have discovered a milestone through this new body of works. Free from any political implications or social messages, his works present unexpected calmness with large canvases and the combination of bright colors. This visual experience and tranquility emanating from the combination of artificial colors lead us to consider the intention point of the fine art. ● Koen Van Den Broek was born in 1973, Belgium. He has completed his undergraduate degree on architecture at Leuven, changed his major to art, and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Academy of Visual Arts in Netherlands. He had three solo exhibitions at White Cube and participated in a group exhibition "Matisse and Beyond: A Century of Modernism)" at SFMoMA(San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) in 2003. He also had a retrpsocetive "THIS AN EXAMPLE OF THAT" at S.M.A.K Museum, collaborated with John Baldessari (b. 1931) who is a master of contemporary art, and held a solo exhibition at Galerie Greta Meert in Brussels. These major exhibits were favorably received by the international art world and drew the attention of major media and critics. Furthermore, as his works have become part of the collections of prestigious museums like SFMoMA (SF, USA), S.M.A.K (Belgium), LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, LA, USA) and Leeum (Seoul, Korea), his unique painting style and artistic approach are well recognized by the world's leading galleries and museums. ■ GB
