제브라 길들이기 How To Tame A Zebra

박해천씨는 그의 신문 칼럼에서 김애란씨의 단편 소설 『침이 고인다』의 여주인공이 '인생의 어떤 부분을 가불 받고 있'는 것 같다는 불안함에 대해 말한다. 기업형 학원의 강사로 일하는 주인공이 지불한 월세가 집주인의 자녀 사교육비로 학원을 거쳐 다시 주인공의 월급 일부로 되돌아 온다는 가정에서 그녀가 그끼는 불안함은 여주인공→월세→집주인→학원비→여주인공의 뫼비우스띠를 닮은 매트릭스 안에서 그녀의 청춘을 소진하고 있는 것일지도 모르는 두려움에서 나온다고 분석한다. 과연 우리네 현실에서 이런 사회 경제적 구조에 바탕을 둔 개인의 감정 상태의 분석에서 자유로울 수 있는 사람이 있을 수 있을까? 나 자신만 보더라도 작업을 위해 작업실을 임대하고 어렵살이 은행 대출로 구한 전세에서 가정을 꾸려간다는 사실에서 자유로울 수 없으니 말이다. 우리는 이런 현실 구조속에서 끊임없이 조금이라도 더 '편안함'을 추구하고 욕망한다. 또 우리사회는 이런 개인의 욕망을 개인의 것으로 치부하고 개인의 능력과 성취로서만 이를 해결하도록 권장한다. 평소 내가 거주하는 각기 다른 곳의 일상에서 관찰되는 일정한 움직임을 시각화하는 작업을 하고 있는 나에게 이런 닫혀있는 움직임은 이번 전시를 구성하는 한 축이 되었다.

얼핏 보기엔 개인의 권리 보장과 이익을 추구하는 기업사이의 갈등으로 보이는 다른 갈등은 또한 어떠한가. 다큐멘터리 『두개의 문』은 국민들이 쌍용 사태를 관용하지 않았다면 용산 참사는 일어나지 않았을 것이라는 인터뷰 내용을 전한다. 관용의 사전적 뜻은 남의 잘못을 너그럽게 받아들이거나 용서함, 또는 그런 용서를 의미하는 것으로서 영화는 국가에 의해 자국민들에게 행해진 폭력을 국민들이 '받아들였기' 때문에 다시 그 이상의 폭력이 반복된다고 말하고 있다. 개인(국민)과 기업의 갈등은 국가의 부재 (중재)와 국가의 개입 (강제 진압)으로 증폭되고 이 과정에서 나 자신 (국민)의 '관용'으로 그 형식적 구조가 완결된다는 증언은 실로 놀라운 것이 아닐 수 없다. 한번 낙오하면 영원히 패배한다는 극단적 교육 제도 아래서 길러지고, 앞서 말한 사회적 구조에 적응하며 살아가는 우리에게 어쩌면 이런 폭력을 관용하는 소극적 태도는 '자연'스러운 부정적 힘의 반동일지도 모른다. 나는 이런 일련의 갈등 구조 속에서 이미 해체되고 상실된 것을 주목하여 이번 전시의 또 다른 축을 구성하였다.

얼룩말은 가축화를 '관용'하지 않는 동물이다. 초원에서 포식자의 눈에 각 개체의 크기보다 거대한 존재로 비치기 위해 유유히 떼를 지어 풀을 띁는 얼룩말은 온순해 보이는 외관과 달리 가축화가 진행되면서 동반되는 스트레스를 스스로 견디지 못하고 죽고 만다고 한다. 그러하기에 인간은 인간에 의해 가축화 (도구화) 되기를 온몸으로 거부하는 이 연약한 야생의 초식 동물에게 더더욱 원시의 아름다움을 느낀다. 이번 전시는 무리속의 한 개인으로 일상에서 다양한 형태의 폭력을 경험하고 '관용'하며 살아가고 있는 생활인인 동시에 작가인 나의 솔직한 자화상이며 연대의 부재에서 오는 우리 사회의 또 하나의 키워드 '불안함'을 표현하는 전시이다. ■ 박혜정

I am sitting in a chain-coffee shop, writing these observations for my show 『How To Tame A Zebra』. It is quite a pleasant space with high ceilings, a clean and shiny floor and plenty of daylight coming in through the huge front window that gives me a nice view over the street. The chair I am sitting in is not bad at all either, it is small but comfortable allowing me to lean back and enjoy the moment. In order to gain access to all of this, I pay for a rather over-priced cup of coffee. Let's look around the coffee house now. There are one or two members of staff behind the coffee bar that take your order and call you when the coffee is ready. The interior of the coffee shop gives off the same pleasant quality as the space it occupies. It is something that you can easily recognize from other chain coffee shops, sophisticated and well fashioned. The owner of this particular branch may have bought his license from a conglomerate after he was made redundant from his restructuring company. But since he spent most of his severance pay to pay the conglomerate for the license and on decorating his shop in accordance with the franchise standards of the conglomerate, he is now renting the property from the building owner as well. ● So my rather over-priced cup of coffee will pay the staff behind the coffee bar, the coffee shop owner, the conglomerate and then the building owner. The building owner and conglomerate will get the agreed amount of money from the coffee shop owner and the coffee shop owner will pay his staff a monthly payment on the basis of an hourly rate that is less than a cup of coffee. For the young staff that works here part-time to pay school fees, this may appear like a ruthless food chain. Whenever they get the chance, they will choose to be a landlord or part of a conglomerate (predator) rather than merely the staff behind the coffee bar (prey). ● 『How to Tame a Zebra』 follows the realization of my position in a neo-liberal social structure and is also informed by a critical view of some recent political and social events in Korea. I started to look into how an individual is left with the responsibility of his own wellbeing in Korea and what kind of conflict is undertaken in peoples' minds under such circumstances. To me, it is a constant balancing act between desiring more comfort (which seems almost impossible to achieve under the social economical structure that I just described with the cup of coffee) and a fear of failing to keep the current social, economical status that I have. A critical view of the recent 'social homicides'(Ssangyong and social homicide, http://www.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_editorial/471278.html, Hankyoreh, 2011.04.04) of Ssangyong workers and Yongsan development protestants also helped me understand how acting as "I", as an individual, sows the seed of fear that is so abundant in our society. ● Zebra is an animal that denies to be domesticated with all of its nature. It eventually dies of stress rather than being an obedient livestock that fulfils their masters' wishes. Zebra is also an animal that has a unique pattern of black and white on their body. But at the same time, they graze together as a herd in order to appear as a big creature against their predator. I wonder; where is the one who left the herd. ■ Park Hye Joung
